21. Chapter 21

We walked into the brightly lit room. It was crowded with people. There were tables around the perimeter of the room, and there was a large space in the middle for a dance floor.

“Boys! Madison! Jessie!” we heard from behind us. Simon stood there, holding a glass of scotch, and smiling. He came to hug us all.

“Hey Uncle Simon,” Louis teased. Everyone laughed.

“Get some champagne, have fun, and dance! There will be no paparazzi here!” he said, chipper. Simon left them standing where they were.

“Looks like he’s had one too many to drink,” Niall joked, and everyone chuckled. It was nice that the media wasn’t going to come into the event and be studying their every move.

“Well, I’ll take advantage of that open bar,” Zayn said, jetting off.

“I better go keep an eye on him,” Louis said, rolling his eyes. Hannah, who had accompanied him, went along.

“Bye guys!” Hannah said, waving. Zayn, who had brought a pretty brunette girl, seemed to have forgotten about his date. She trailed after them.

“Niall, let’s dance,” his date, a blonde haired girl, said.

“Ooh, I’m not too good at dancing - but okay,” he said, taking her hand. He led her to the dance floor. This left Liam, me, Madison, and Harry.

“Harry, I want a drink,” Madison said, kissing him on the cheek. I refrained from gagging.

“So, go get one,” he said, obliviously.

“I want you to come get one with me!”

I rolled my eyes.

“Oh,” he said, his gaze lingering on me. “Okay, coming.”

I refused to meet his eyes, and he sighed. He went with his girlfriend, which left Liam and I standing side by side. I looked over at him, pleading for him to break this unbearable silence.

“Can we please talk?” I asked, hoping he would say yes. To my surprise, he nodded and led me over to an empty table. He pulled out my chair for me, and sat down.

“Talk.” Liam looked at me, curiously.

“I am really sorry, Liam. Seriously - I can’t even believe I would fall asleep with Harry. That was so stupid and careless of me. And if I saw you falling asleep with your ex-girlfriend, I would feel exactly the way you do.”

His eyes met mine, finally. “I know you’re sorry, Jess. I’m just worried that you and Harry won’t be able to get over what you had. “

“I promise, I will do anything to make you believe that I’m serious about you. Only you,” I pleaded. I looked at him, and he stared at back. He had to believe me.

But before he could answer, Louis rushed over. “Zayn’s drunk and he’s going to start a fight with someone out in the corridor! Need some backup.”

Liam looked up and back at me apologetically. “Sorry, I have to deal with this,” he said. I waved him away, smiling.

“It’s no problem. Go do what you need to.”

He grinned, thankfully, and left with Louis. I stared at both of them as they left and sighed. A waiter offered a glass of champagne, in which I took gratefully. I sipped at the bubbly liquid, looking around for anyone I knew.

Niall was occupied with his date, and they were dancing in the middle. It was adorable.

“Food for your thoughts?” someone asked from beside me, and I turned around. Harry stood there, handing me a biscuit.

“Thanks,” I said, taking it. “I was just in the middle of apologizing to Liam.”

“How was he taking it?”

“Not sure. He left to do something before we could work things out.”

He nodded, scanning the room. His eyes trailed over everyone who was dancing and his gaze seemed to stop at Niall and his date. He started to chuckle.

“Niall does not know what to do with himself,” he said, staring at the awkward dancing movements he was trying to do.

I laughed, pushing him teasingly. “You’re not that much better, Harry.”

“What are you talking about? Remember when I took you out to that club, and we went dancing?”

I nodded, chuckling even at the memory. “You spilled your drink all over my dress.”

“Oops,” he said, blushing. “I forgot that part.”

We both stared at each other and burst out laughing. We had so many good times together, it was too hard to count. Whenever I was sad or frustrated or angry, he knew exactly what to do to make it all better. He just knew me, inside out.

“Ugh, I can never stay mad at you. It’s frustrating,” I said, lightly. He smiled, slightly.

“I could never stay angry at you, ever. Even when we were dating.” The word dating seemed to send shivers through me. When we were dating. It sunk my heart just to hear that.

“Yeah. When we fought, and you would leave, and I would go back to my house, I would just think about it. Think about our argument and sit in guilt. And then, instantly after, I missed you. I had to see you so we could stop fighting.”

“I hated fighting with you too, but whenever we did - I just always felt you would blame me for everything. I never thought you felt guilty.”

“I don’t know,” he said, shrugging. “I just always didn’t want to be the one responsible for hurting you, even if it was my fault. I just couldn’t face the fact that I was the one who hurt you.”

I stared at him, his bright-green eyes shining in the light. “Where’s Madison?”

“She ran into someone she knew, and they’ve been talking for ages.”

Before I could respond, the DJ standing on a platform at the front of the room spoke. “Alright, I think we’ll slow it down a bit! So everyone, couple up, and come down to the dance floor!”

“Wanna dance?” Harry wondered, staring at me. I nodded, not sure why I said yes. But, right now, all I wanted to do was be with Harry. I succumbed to my heart. I took his hand and he led me to the dance floor. I put my arms around his shoulders, and he wrapped his own around my waist. It almost felt like old times.

“Jess,” he said, softly.

“Can I ask you something? Something more personal?”

“Why not?” I said, laughing. “We’ve been talking very personally this whole time anyhow.”

However, the next question had stopped me in my tracks. I had no idea what to answer to what he said. I just stared at him as he said:

“Do you actually like Liam?”

I was in silence. There was ONLY silence. How would I answer that? How COULD I answer that?

“Well, do you?”
