16. Chapter 16

“Do you have to leave Liam?” I asked, standing by the doorway where he was putting on his coat.

I attempted to take his jacket off, jokingly. He chuckled and leaned in to give me a kiss. I released the jacket and sighed.

“It’s only overnight. My friend rarely comes into London and I want to see him before he leaves tomorrow,” he said, gently. I watched him as he checked his pockets for his phone and money.

“Be good. Don’t go to strip clubs,” I said, pretending to be stern. He simply let out a laugh and kissed me again.

“Do you really think kissing me is going to make me forget you’re leaving me?” I asked, teasingly. Liam leaned in again and kissed me. “Wow, you must think your kisses are worth a lot,” I added, chuckling.

“Aren’t they?” he wondered.

“I guess,” I said, grinning. “I’m just going to be really lonely without you.”

“I’ll be back, and I’ll be the first thing you see tomorrow morning. I promise,” he said, brushing a piece of hair that was falling into his eyes. “Now, I really have to go.”

“Fine,” I said, reluctantly. I gave him a swift kiss and then he was gone out the door. I felt my insides tingle. Wow, I was really happy with everything at the moment. Or so I thought I was…I just kept replaying the moment where Madison told me to stay away from her boyfriend…

I couldn’t believe she did that. But the more surprising thing was that I couldn’t believe I was listening to her. Something about her sounded like she meant business. And I also thought that staying away from him would make me get over him faster. Focusing all my attention on Liam should help.

“Jessie, you have any plans tonight?” I heard from behind me. Louis was standing on the stairwell, wrapping a scarf around his neck.

“Not really,” I replied, sadly.

“Cheer up, I’m sure you’ll find something to do,” he said, kissing me lightly on the cheek. “Bye love.”

I waved goodbye and watched him walk out the door. I heard a burst of laughter from behind me, and I spun around. It was Niall and Zayn.

“Hey guys,” I said, waving.

“Jess, want to come with us? We’re going to Nando’s,” Niall asked. Typical. I laughed, and I shook my head.

“I just had it yesterday. Have fun, though,” I said, and the boys smiled.

“Bring you back something,” Zayn said over his shoulder, before shutting the door. With all the boys gone, that just left…

Me and Harry. I sighed. Well, at least I knew nothing could happen between us - we both had someone. Whether we liked it or not.

I shook my head. How could I think about Liam like that? I couldn’t just believe that he was there to satisfy my needs of having someone. And I’m sure Madison wasn’t just Harry’s substitute. Come on, she was beautiful. She couldn’t be anybody’s second.

“Madison, where are you?” I heard Harry say irritatedly. I heard squabble on the other end of his phone.

He was walking down the stairs, and I plopped down on the sofa pretending to concern myself with a book.

“But, I set up something special. I told you I planned something. How come you’re out?” he asked, standing near me. I flipped a page, my ears open to hear more. “Fine, I didn’t want you to come out anyway.”

He pressed a button on his phone and sighed. I knew that sound - he was angry and frustrated and upset all at once. I let my heart ache for him for a moment. Even though Madison was a bitch, I still felt bad for him.

“Are you okay?” I said, hoping that he would hear the concern in my voice.

“Not exactly,” he said, sighing. He groaned and walked over to where I was sitting. “I did something nice for her, and she’s saying she doesn’t want to come out.”

“That’s her loss,” I said, comfortingly. He smiled slightly.

“I did all this work for nothing.”

“What was it?”

“Candlelit picnic in the park, by the river,” he said, lost in his own thought. I couldn’t help but feel washed over with frustration. Every part of me froze. He did that for me when we were together. But, we weren’t with each other anymore. I just needed to take a deep breath and move on. I could feel my heart slowly crumble away again.

“Maybe you didn’t do it for nothing.” The words just seemed to tumble out of my mouth. He looked at me in confusion. I stood up, holding out my hand. He took it, standing up as well.

He followed me out the door and I led him to the park by the river. The site was breathtaking. Embers glowed by the midnight water, the stars sparkling above. A soft breeze blew through, and I led him to the blanket that was laid out.

“It’s so beautiful,” I whispered, as I sat down. He took a seat beside me and grinned appreciatively.

“You are too,” he said, softly. My head was trying to tell me how wrong this was. How he shouldn’t say that anymore because those words didn’t belong to me. Those words belonged to another girl.

“Harry,” I said, softly.

“Everything I did - it was so wrong. I should have just stayed with you because how could I ever think I could have anything better than you,” he replied, gently. He allowed himself to brush a strand of hair from my eyes.

“It’s okay,” I managed to say.

“No it’s not,” he replied. “I love you Jess. I always will. Nothing will change how I feel about you. But I just want you to be happy. And if you’re not happy with me, then I’m willing to let you go so you can find someone who will make you happy.”

I felt a tear slide down my cheek. If only he knew that the only person I could truly be content with was sitting right beside me.

“Thank you. And don’t think I don’t want you to be happy. I sincerely want you to be happy with whoever you’re with,” I replied, wiping the tear away. “I don’t want to let you go, but I think I have to. We both have someone now. I guess that’s just how it’s supposed to be.”

“Just so you know, you’ll always be a part of my heart.”

I lay down, my head resting on his lap. “Let’s just enjoy this evening we have together.”

“Sounds good,” he said.

I watched the stars twinkle above our heads and it felt like the whole world stopped just for us. I watched him watch the sky, and I knew I really couldn’t move on.
