14. Chapter 14

I was just sitting on the couch in the boys’ flat, flipping through a magazine. Liam was out with Zayn, buying some food for dinner tonight. Louis was up in his room, and Harry was with him.

I heard a door shut from upstairs, and footsteps became louder as someone came down the stairs. I looked up and it was Harry.

He smiled. “Hey Jess.”

“Hey Harry,” I said, closing my magazine. “Er - thanks again for the interview thing. I know you weren’t really okay with it.”

“Well, were you?”

“Of course I was,” I lied. I tried not to look at him. He’d know I was lying if he stared at me.

“No you’re not. You’re lying,” he said. I sighed. He knew me way too well. “Jess, how can you pretend that you’re fine with dating Liam? Not one part of you feels guilty? Feels hurt? What we had together was something that not just anyone can replace! I thought you felt the same too!”

“I did, Harry! Before you went and slept with another girl!” Had I taken it too far by bringing that up?

He looked taken aback. “I’ve told you before, and I’ll tell you again. That girl meant nothing to me. I was drunk, and she was there. I was lonely, and I missed you. I was stupid, and I had sex with her. But, if I could take back that night, I would! If I could take back everything that has happened that I’ve ever done to hurt you, I would take it all back!”

I shook my head. “It doesn’t work like that, Harry. You did it, and that’s what happened. You didn’t give my feelings a second thought. I can’t change the fact that you thought about another girl that night!”

“Jessie, I love you! Please, please, just give me another chance!” He stepped towards me, but I shook my head.

“I was thinking of our whole relationship. You made me feel like crap most days, when you were the one who should feel like shit. You constantly turned the blame on me, made me feel bad that you weren’t calling me enough. You always told me you didn’t have any time to talk, and I should understand that. But, how are Louis and Hannah doing so well, huh? How?”

I was shouting now, hot tears rushing to my eyes. I could feel my voice cracking, and I didn’t want to show him, again, how much I was hurting still. How much he had made me feel like I was worth nothing.

“I made a mistake, Jess. But, I’ll never make it again! Fame just got to me, and I couldn’t help myself. I will never let that happen again!” he said, yearningly. I quickly wiped a tear from my eye and looked away.

“You know what the worst part is?” I asked, letting my tears spill. “The worst part is that I still love you.”

He stood there, and I could almost see his heart breaking. But so what? Mine was already broken. It had already been smashed into tiny pieces. No one could repair that.

“You should just move on,” I told him, firmly. “Because that’s what I’m doing.”

I saw anger rise in his eyes. Frustration was building up, and I knew he was ready to smash through a wall. He spoke with surprising calmness, that scared me even more.

“Fine. As of now, consider me moved on.”

Tonight was the first night of our tour. And I was on stage. I was standing in blinding lights cascading down from the ceiling, in the middle of a vast stage. Fog encircled me, as I rose from the platform. Everything was dark, except for one blinding spotlight. I couldn’t see the crowd. It was terrifying and comforting all at the same time.

I opened my mouth, prepared to sing the first few lyrics of my song. It started off slowly, building up and up. I was closing my eyes, trying to prepare myself for the set of songs I had ready. This was my shining my moment. Come on, Jess. This is what you’ve been waiting for, forever.

I sang my song, and the audience burst into huge applause. They actually liked it. They shouted and screamed, as I continued my set of songs. The crowd was hollering my name, and I had never felt more special.

I waved to the crowd and said into my microphone, “Thank you everyone! I appreciate this most amazing reaction! Seriously, you made my first performance in front of a crowd this big such a great experience. Something I’ll never forget! I hope you enjoy the rest of the show, and the boys will be on momentarily. I promise!”

The audience exploded, as they waved their hands in the air. I smiled, as I walked off the stage. An assistant was waiting there to grab my microphone, hand me a towel, and send me to my dressing room.

I walked into the room, where the boys were all dressed and done up. “JESSIE!” Louis screamed, giving me a huge hug. I smiled, hugging him back.

“I heard you were amazing!” Liam said, giving me a quick kiss.

“Well done, my friend,” Zayn said, patting me on the back. I saw Harry, but he was pretending to be too occupied with his conversation with the hair artist. The woman was running her hand through his curls, and I couldn’t help but notice he looked absolutely gorgeous.

His soft curls framed his face, and his bright blue-green eyes were shining as he chattered on. His button up blue shirt had a few buttons left undone, and his sleeves were rolled up.

“Stop staring, it’s impolite,” Louis said from behind, jokingly.

“What?” I asked, instantly looking to Liam.

“Don’t worry, he didn’t see you,” he reassured me. I sighed with relief. “But, if you miss Harry so much, why don’t you just tell him that.”

“It’s a bit more complicated, Louis. And I can’t do that to Liam.”

“That’s true,” he said, thoughtfully. “But, don’t string Liam along, love.”

“I’m trying not to,” I sighed. It was unrealistic to lie to Louis. I knew I could trust him, and he was one of the few people who I could have a conversation with, without wanting to yell and shout at him.

“Good job out there tonight, babe,” he said, changing the subject. He kissed me on the cheek, and I smiled slightly. He walked away, talking to Harry, and I sighed. There was something about that boy…

“Jess?” Niall asked from behind. I turned around. Wow, I haven’t spoken to him in ages. I smiled, slightly, and he grinned back. Maybe things were going to be okay.

“Hey,” I said, “how are you feeling?”

“Nervous,” he said, fidgeting with his hands. “I just wanted to say good job out there.”

“Thanks Niall,” I replied, smiling fully this time.

“And also, can we go back to normal? Like being friends? I hate this ice between you and me.”

“I hate it too,” I said, giving a sigh of relief. Thank God, one of the didn’t hate me.

“I know I was really pushy and wrong to make you like me the way I did.” He sounded apologetic. He put his hands in his trousers, and I patted his shoulder. “I’m really sorry.”

“I would love to go back to normal,” I said, giving him a hug. He wrapped his arms around me, tightly.

“Thanks,” he whispered.

We pulled away, and I offered him a kiss on the cheek. He blushed. “You’re really not helping the whole just friends thing,” he teased.

I laughed. “Sorry, bud.”

He walked away, and I felt better.

The duet with Louis went really well, and the crowd sounded so pumped to see me and him. It was a really cute performance, and everyone knew that we weren’t in love with each other. We both dedicated it to our perspective people.

After the show was over, the boys wanted to go to the flat and celebrate. Alcohol was brought out, people were called, and soon it was turned into a full fledged party. I was dancing with Liam in the television room - with all the furniture pushed aside.

It was a good night, and I was drinking a lot more than I should. I was giggling with Liam, giving him tiny kisses.

The doorbell rang, and I turned my head to see who it was. Harry opened the door, and there stood a tall, slim, beautiful girl. She had sparkling hazel eyes and smile that could bright up any room. Her silky brown hair framed her face.

I leaned away from Liam to get a closer look.

“What are you looking at?” he wondered, noticing that I wasn’t focused on him anymore. He turned around to see what I was looking at.

Harry leaned in and kissed her.

What was that? He kissed her. On the lips. On her face. I felt my stomach drop, as I watched them intently. How could he do that? In the span of a week, he found someone else. From the way he was talking to me, I didn’t think he would actually be able to move on.

Harry and the girl came closer to us, and I knew he was going to introduce her. “This is Madison,” he said, grinning.

“Hey Madison,” Liam said, giving her a hug. Madison, where have I heard that name before? “Haven’t seen you since the music video!”

Oh. What Makes You Beautiful music video. The gorgeous girl who apparently didn’t know she was gorgeous. Oh, but she was. And I envied her for that.

“Hey Liam,” she said, sweetly. “Is this your girlfriend?”

I nodded. “Hi, I’m Jessie,” I forced out. She grinned. Clearly she didn’t know I was Harry’s ex. “And you are?”

“She’s my girlfriend,” Harry said, smugly. I widened my eyes, but quickly tried to compose myself.

He literally found a girlfriend within a short week. I tried to remain calm, as I turned my attention back to Liam.

But, then I felt someone directly behind me. His mouth was close to my ear. It was Harry. He whispered as he spoke, no one able to hear him but me. His voice was full of hurt and pain.

“Have I moved on enough for you?”
