Face the Music

Julia is your typical sixteen year old girl. She lives with her mother and her little sister Marty, she has her insecurities, she has her boy issues, and oh yeah, her love for the British/Irish boy-band One Direction. When her seventeenth birthday arrives, everything seems perfect....until it all fell apart piece by piece. But to every rainy day there is always a rainbow, what will happen when she unexpectedly 'falls hard' for not one, but two of the boys in One Direction? And what would happen if they both like her back? Would rivalry break everyone apart? Or will the fandom get to them first? Just as life is, every situation has two faces. One is an amazing benefit, and the other could lead to sacrifice...

50. Face the Music

Julia's POV

I sat on the countertop and looked wearily at the text, wishing that somehow it would just- disappear. "We can't do this." I commented all of sudden catching Zayn's attention. "But what about Harry? We don't have enough time to contemplate here. His life could be on the line. I don't think she's joking anymore." "But...you and Sky-" He shuffled himself to the fridge and merely sighed while shrugging. "Do we have a choice? The girl said that we have to make EVERYONE convinced that you and I are dating. Even the rest of the boys, El and Skylar." Although Zayn basically brushed aside my question of his relationship with my cousin, I knew that he truly didn't want to do this anymore than I did.

"Julie, don't feel so guilty. None of this is really your fault. If anything, I think Harry should share some of the blame, for not being by you at this time. I know that you want to discuss this with him." I narrowed my eyes at Zayn as he said 'his' name. "Why him?" I asked sharply. "Well...as much as you two 'broke up', both of you still love each other. I don't know if that still counts as a true ended relationship." I crossed my arms on my chest. "Zayn, we both moved on. He has a new girlfriend and I have a new boyfriend." "Julie, I don't really think the new girlfriend thing is-wait. You have a new boyfriend?" I nodded with a slight smirk. "Who?" I opened the opaque kitchen door and pointed at the blonde boy sitting on the sofa facing the other wall in the living room with his guitar in hand.

I pulled Zayn back in the kitchen and closed the door before he said a single word. "You're dating Niall? When did this happen?!" His eyes seemed to grow larger with surprise at his own words. "Like ten seconds before the text came." I muttered as I burried my face in my hands. It was true, we started dating only seconds before I got the text, and now I had to break up with him?

Thankfully, Zayn's words relieved me quite a bit. "We're not doing this then, without telling everyone first. Niall is the one that gets me through a lot of the times when I'm down, so we can't have his heart broken. Especially not by you." As he spoke, I saw a slight smirk form on his lips. "I have honestly no idea what you just implied there...but anyways alright, and thank you. I can cope with that, so should we call Louis and El?" "Yeah. I'll do that. You call Skylar."

Louis' POV

"Well that was fun." I mumbled sarcastically as I carried all of Eleanor's bags of stuff she bought from the mall, out to the car. She stopped in her tracks and in front of me and focused her eyes in my direction. "You picked me up from work and asked me where I wanted to go. Like any other girl, shopping is one of the top things on the list." I couldn't help but grin slightly at her attitude and roll my eyes under my shades. No wonder people called her the female version of me.

I put her bags in the trunk and opened the passenger seat door for her before getting in the driver's seat myself. "So where to next?" I asked as I tapped my fingers on the wheel. "Back to the hotel. I want to make sure that Julie is ok, she is literally like a little sister to me now." I chuckled and put my arm over her shoulders as I kissed her forehead lightly. "El, you are not that much older than her. And besides, why wouldn't she be alright? She's got the lads to help her forget the airport incident." "Um..she might have overlooked that, but she surely did see this." Eleanor flashed me an article on a gossip page from her cell phone and handed it to me to read. I couldn't believe my eyes. "This is all a lie! It can't be true. Harry's a flirt to a certain extent, but this just makes him seem like a 'womanizer' or something." I handed her back the phone and she just shrugged at my earlier comment as she placed it back in her pocket.

I put the keys in the ignition and was about to start the car, when my ringtone blared on full volume.

"Hello?" "Hey Lou? It's Zayn. Can you and El come back to the hotel as soon as possible?" "Yeah, we're on our way back now anyways. What's the rush?" He sighed and I could hear Julie talking to another girl, probably Skylar, in the background. "Just...get here and I'll explain." "Alright. Bye." "Bye."

"He sounded serious. Do you think everything's ok?" El said with a puzzled expression as soon as I hung up. "I'm sure everything's fine." I wanted to sound sure so she could be less worried, but I knew my expression gave the situation away...

Zayn's POV

"They're on their way back." I said to Julie who was sitting on the sofa across from me with Skylar, Liam and Niall on her two sides. "You ok babe? You look a little stressed." Niall whispered clutching her hands in his. She merely nodded and exchanged a forced smile with him before excusing herself to go to the kitchen. I followed behind her and caught a glimpse of her wiping a tear away from her eyes. "Julie please don't cry." She seemed a little shocked to acknowledge my presence but quickly walked over to me as I wrapped her into a hug. "It's going to be ok." "How do you know? What if he doesn't want to be with me anymore? We would only be able to date out of the sight of the paparazi. Other times I need to be seen with you." "Niall's a reasonable guy, I wouldn't worry about that. And on the other hand, and what's wrong with being seen with me?" I asked her in a cocky tone. She cracked a small smile and washed her face before we went back outside; only to be greeted by Louis and El. "We came as fast as possible! WHERE'S THE FIRE?!" Louis shouted jokingly.

"Ignore him," El said softly and they seated themselves at another sofa, "So is everything ok?" "Well...here's the summary of the situation. Julie's been sent threats by a mystery girl, and I think - we think, that the threats are getting pretty serious and legit."

We spent about half an hour at least, just explaining the entire situation to the confused and worried five, and showing them the texts as well. When they all finally understood, and Julie was done being mobbed with hugs; we reached the issue of Julie having to sing, and us having to date.

"So you guys have to...date?" Skylar asked clearly uncomfortable. "Just for the cameras love. Other times, not at all. Besides, I don't think Niall would let me steal his girl." I shot a smile to Niall who just widened his eyes at me. "Not funny Zayn." Sky continued, crossing her arms. I sat next to her and held her hand in mine until she finally had a small grimace on her face.

"Julie, do you know when you have to sing?" Louis asked. "Umm..at your next concert. So thankfully I should have enough time to practice." Hearing her response, he immediately glared at me. "You never told her?" "Told me what?" Julie asked standing taller and looking around confusedly. "Love, our next concert....is tomorrow." For a second, I was almost positive that she would faint.

Julia's POV

"Julie let's try it again from the top again, don't be so nervous babe."

Somehow, and I meant it when I said 'somehow', because I honestly don't know what they did to appeal to his better nature..the boys managed to convince Simon Cowell to let them use the concert revenue for tomorrow, to get me used to the stage.

I was alright at first, singing along to the lyrics they had written for me just that morning. I had memorized and learnt the song much faster and productively than they had expected me to. But when Louis turned on the bright lights that shone on the stage, it was a whole different story. I froze. By the time Liam qued in the music, I was just standing there as if my feet had grown roots to the floor, and my tongue had tied itself into a knot.

We tried two more times under those conditions; it was all still futile. I could tell that Simon was getting quite annoyed, which added to the pressure of my stage fright. Only Niall could truly see though how much I just wanted to run away and just hide in a hole, away from the world. "Guys stop. Give us two minutes." He stepped onto the stage and grabbed my hand leading me to the side entrance of the auditorium. "I can't do it." I said flatly as I felt myself begin to sob, but I managed to hold the tears in. Niall softly used his thumb to rub the back of my hand. "I know you're an amazing singer, so I want the world to know too. What happened to you before Julie, needs to be overlooked. If you put on an amazing performance tomorrow, everyone will forget about all the bad publicity you got previously. You just need to take a chance and believe in yourself." "But what if, I 'fail' like the video said. Or what if I s-" Before I could say another word, I was shut up. Not by words, or gestures, that wouldn't have worked. I was silenced by Niall pressing his soft lips on mine. I eased up and kissed him back passionately, until I felt him move back, leaving me wanting more. "Just remember that. You'll be fine."

He took my hand and pulled me back into the auditorium, but I wouldn't budge. I gave him a shot of my puppy-dog eyes to try and convince him to finish the kiss. Niall finally did walk back over to me, and took both my hands in his as he chuckled quietly. "Want the rest of that? Sing tomorrow, and maybe we can see about how far we can go later..."

**The next day**

"Thank you everyone for coming to our show! We have a long list of events planned for tonight...but first...I would like to point out the fact that Harry is not here tonight due to personal reasons. Hope you all understand- so let's get this show on the road!"

The whole concert was amazing and hilarious with the boys' funny quips as usual, but I just couldn't relax and enjoy it. The performance that I had to deliver at the end of the show loomed over me making me uneasy, Sky was the first to notice. "You're going to be great, don't worry." She and El gave me a caring hug and smile. "I can't afford to mess up." I said truthfully over the screaming girls. "But you can't afford not to perform either." El pointed out. I nodded understanding completely what she meant. "Julie, you performed in front of even larger crowds in singing competitions before the incident happened; and you won first place in them! So I don't know why you can't just forget that one little mistake." "Sky you know th-"

"Now before we come to the end of the show, we would like to invite someone to perform for you all tonight." "That's your cue Julie! You'll do great, I believe in you!" El cheered. The time had come already? I should have just hidden in the bathroom like the little girl I felt like. I had the worst feeling in my stomach as I walked up the stairs to join the boys on stage. With every step, I felt smaller, and weaker, and more vulnerable. Just as I stepped onto the last stair at the side of the stage, my cell phone vibrated. Another text.

To: JulieMarti39 From: Unknown;) I'm watching...

Oh how convienient, it was a different unknown number this time; so it was probably the person the 'stalker girl' had sent to make sure I performed.

I continued on to the stage despite the horror I was feeling, where Zayn handed me his mic. "Ready?" Niall whispered to me, lightly squeezing my hand. "Yeah." I responded as I took a deep breath and shook off his grasp. I had to make it look like I was dating Zayn...not Niall, sadly. "Hi my name is Julia Martise, and I hope you enjoy my performance." Before I was about to have the music cued in, I heard murmurs in the crowd. "Isn't she that girl from that video?" "Is that the fail girl?" "BOO!" "DAMN BRO, SHE'S GOT NO STYLE. SHE'S UGLY."

Ok, that last one actually hurt...However everyone had a right to their own opinion...But just saying, if I wasn't on stage at that moment, I would have probably gone up to that girl and said, "That's cool. I don't wake up and dress to impress you."

Nonetheless, I brushed all words aside and focused on staying calm and performing like I did back when I didn't have stage fright. I cleared my voice, took a deep breath, and closed my eyes. 'You can do it.' 'I believe in you.' 'YOU GO GIRL!' 'You will be amazing!' 'You're really talented! This should be a piece of cake for you!' Voices of encouragement that I had heard before I clambered onto the stage, filled my mind instead of the negative ones. I felt better. I no longer had the urge to puke or run away anymore. I could do this.

I nodded at Josh and the rest of the boys in the band as they started to play the part of the song I had chosen to sing...

"People say we shouldn't be together, we're too young to know about forever. But I say, they don't know what they're talk-talk-talkin' about. 'Cause this love is only getting stronger, so I don't wanna wait, any longer. I just wanna tell the world that you're mine boy.

Oh. They don't know about the things we do, they don't know about the 'I love you's'. But I bet you if they only knew; They would just be jealous of us. They don't know about the 'Up all Nights' they don't know I've waited all my life. Just to find a love that feels this right, baby they don't know about- they don't know about us."

I finished up the part that I had planned to sing up to, and I waited to hear the audience's reaction. I had only chosen two verses to sing out of the complete three minutes song...but in Harry's X-Factor video diary words- 'simple, but effective'.

For the first ten seconds, the whole auditorium was dead silent after my performance. I was worried, until one by one, people's claps and cheering filled the room. I couldn't believe it. They liked it! They actually liked, my singing! I was still enjoying the moment and pinching myself to see if this was just all just a dream when the unexpected happened.

Zayn walked over to me and kissed me on the lips. In front of the millions of people in the audience, and of those, Skylar. I shot him a look of confusion and just watched puzzled, as he walked away slowly, with his Blackberry in hand. I fixed my gaze back into the audience and heard some high pitched whistling, or 'wolf-whistles' in proper term, camera flashes going off non-stop, and the occasional 'GET AWAY HE'S MINE!'; Basically meaning that they had all seen the kiss.

I felt both happy, that I had lost my stage fright with this performance; and extremely baffled with Zayn's actions. Suddenly, I remembered the two people that I knew would probably not take the situation too well.

Niall just stood there. He didn't seem upset with me as he did clap with a forced smile, but he did look like he would murder Zayn at any second. On the other hand, Skylar was already in tears running out the side door. I shot El a 'please help' look, and thankfully she got the message as she nodded at me and ran after Sky. Why would Zayn do that? He knew this would happen and all the chaos that would be caused...

'The way you move is like a full on rainstorm, and I'm a house of cards...' My familiar Taylor Swift ringtone blared on full volume as I walked off the stage, but it was pretty well muffled by the sounds of screaming girls. I put the phone to my ear to accept the call, but as soon as I did; I wish I hadn't.

"Hello?" "Well done, you performed. And what have we here with the kiss? Believe me, the chaos has 'just' begun."

The phone line went dead just like that. I couldn't see if anyone looked like they matched the voice of the caller, I was just blinded by flashes. As much as I wanted the phone call to be an empty threat, I knew that the end, was just the beginning.

I had Faced the Music, now I was prepared for anything...at least I thought I was.
