2. Eleven years later...

Are they alive? That was the question that plauged her mind every time Garnet sat on the sole window-seat in the orphanage, looking out at the open fields and forest. Tonight I’m going to do it, she thought, I'm going to run away, away from the daily torment, the back breaking work, the awful food, the itchy uniform and the beatings. That was only a few of the things she would not miss. Garnet ran up to her box of a room and began stuffing her few possessions in to a old rucksack to take with her when she ran away. She reached up to the top of her closet and brought down a old, leather bound book. It was RedBird. When Ehwaz had left her there in the hell-hole many years ago, he had hidden the book underneath her, wrapped in ruby red satin, at the time when Sylene orphanage wasn't a prison. The previous owner had let her keep the book after finding a hidden PS on the letter, asking for Garnet to be able to keep the book, as it was a 'family heirloom'. Garnet leafed through the pages, skimming the book before she thrust it in to her rucksack. She slung the rucksack over her shoulders and quickly threw a rope out the window, securely tying her end to the window ledge before climbing down it to reach the bramble covered garden. It wasn't going to be easy getting to the high wall, let alone getting over it. Garnet pushed herself the brambles, ducking every now and then to avoid the search lights or the night-watchman from spotted her, which she couldn't afford right now. As she came to the barbed wire covered wall, she began to have her doubts. Garnet ran to the on area where there was no barbed wire cover on it. The piece of wall right in front of Miss Adderhead's apartment. Miss Adderhead was the cruel, ruthless mistress of the orphanage, who tormented and starved the residents day in, day out. Garnet had timed the escape just right so that Adderhead was eating her vast dinner and she could make a quick get away. She threw the rope over the wall and began scaling the wall. Suddenly, a cry pierced the night, a bell started to ring and a spotlight landed on her spindly figure as she climbed the wall. The night-watchman had seen her! Twenty faces appeared at the dining room window, watching her as the dogs and Miss Adderhead sprinted to her. “Come down her at once Garnet Elizabeth Layton! You know I don't tolerate escapees!” Miss Adderhead yelled. “Face, bothered? See you later!” Garnet shouted gleefully as she reached the top of the wall. “I WILL GET YOU YET GARNET LAYTON!”shouted Miss Adderhead, who was practically fainting with shock and anger. When she landed safely on the other side of the wall, Garnet did just one thing. Run. She ran and ran till daybreak and flopped down on the soft, emerald green grass, gasping for breath. Garnet reached in to her bag, pulled out Ehwaz's slightly crumpled letter and looked at the map he had draw for her to follow. Her long, fair hair fell in front of her perfectly normal face as she read the map.

She spent a long time looking at the map, planning her next move. About an hour later, she headed off to start her long and dangerous trek to reach Taurus's village in Italy. The forest she was trekking through was a very beautiful place and she stopped again briefly to take in the sights and smells of the forest. The ancient, jade green trees whispered in the wind and the fading sun-light dappled the forest floor. Birds chirped in the evening light and a soft, autumn breeze rustled though the foliage. As she wandered through the pleasant forest, lush, the emerald green grass crunched under her feet. It felt so good to her to be out of the old crumbling orphanage where she had been copped up for so many years. No, she thought to herself fiercely, stop thinking of the orphanage! It's behind you now and your never going back. Never in a million years or more. Never again would she lay her gaze on it. Or so she thought...
