Moving into Death

Rylee, a lonely 10 year old girl finds an interesting looking gemstone while exploring in the garden of her new home. She soon becomes captivated by it and, oblivious to its actual power as a magic crystal, takes it home. After a while, when she notices some weird goings-on around the house, valuables going missing, people getting hurt etc she becomes apprehensive. She tries to tell her parents to no avail. Will she be able to convince them of the crystal's true powers before it's too late for them all?

5. Loss

Three days later, I still hadn't found Crystal and I was really worried. What if someone found her and took her away from me? I couldn't lose her. She was my only friend. I had to find her.

I was walking down the stairs for breakfast when I heard my parents talking. I usually wouldn't have passed any remarks but it was the emotion in their voices that made me notice. I walked into the kitchen and they looked at me strangely, partly like they didn't want me there and partly like they were trying to act natural.

"What's up?" I asked curiously.

"Nothing." Dad said, "Dont worry about it."

"No." I protested, "What's up? Tell me." They shared a glance and finally Mam said sadly, "I've lost your great granny's engagement ring that your father gave to me, and we've looked everywhere." She then burst into tears and dad and I rushed to comfort her.

As I was subjected to the love and sadness of the group hug, I wondered whether Crystal had anything to do with Mam's ring going missing. I quickly countered the thought with "No. Crystal wouldn't do anything like that. She's nice."

Although I was sure of that thought, something at the back of my mind niggled away, saying, "Is she really?"
