Child of the Seas

Ebony and Merry live two very different lives in separate worlds. Neither has ever considered the possibility of the other's existence. But now the bridges between the worlds are weakening.
An ancient prophecy snatches Merry from her world and brings her to Ebony. Now, the two girls must save Ebony's world from a terror as old as the prophecy, which is destroying the world and the worlds connected to it.
Countless lives and worlds are resting on the girls' shoulders... but will Ebony and Merry be able to save them?

13. Ebony - 7

I didn't know what to do when Merry screamed and fell off her water cushion. I jumped of and an to her side. He rface was contorted in pain.

"Ebony!" she cried. "What's happening? What's happening to me?"

"Just... just wait, Merry. Oh, please, just wait. Hold on!"

I banged on Mendrakar's door. He peered out. "Yes, Aglaia?" His face broke into a smile. "Oh, you have saved us! Just as I knew you would." He stepped forward to hug me but I stopped him.

"Mendrakar, Merry is in terrible pain. We need your help!"

His smile disappeared. "Of course. Lead me to her." Moving nimbly, as though he were twenty, Mendrakar followed me through the crowd to Merry.

"Oh, no. Oh, no," he said.

"The poison you created is somehow killing her as well as the Terror. My guess is that she forgot to use all of it, and some is still stored inside her now."

"No!" I screamed.

It was Merry. She had stopped spasming. Her voice was weak. I looked at her, and tears started running down my cheeks. I ran to her and held her hand. "Merry. Merry! It's going to be okay. Hold on. Hold on, please... Mendrakar, do something!"

He shook his head. "Your poison is without antidote. Merry shall die, whether we wish it or not."

"No!" I screamed again.

"However," Mendrakar continued, "she will only be killed here."

I looked at him. "What do you mean?"

"Merry will still be alive on Earth. She will be transported back when she dies. One day she may be able to return... but who knows when. Earth time goes differently from ours."

"Oh, Merry, did you hear that?!"

She had. Smiling weakly, she said, "I promise I will, one day. You are my best friend, Ebony. Remember that. I will..." Her voice shook. "I will find you again." Her eyes closed.

"Oh, Merry." My tears fell on her hand. I looked up.

"I have to wait. She will come back. If I she can't come, then I will go." I turned back to Merry.

"I promise I will see you again."
