10. The Light in the Dark Room

Louis felt awake, but not completely. His eyes were clouded and crusty. His body was limp and numb. He couldn’t feel anything. He lied there for a second, letting his senses return to his body. He sat up and took a look at his surroundings.

He was in a small, curtained hospital room. He was wearing a thin green robe with no back and his arms were plugged pull of cables. His iPhone and laptop sat on a small end table beside a glass of water. There was also a small paper note with Harry’s handwriting that said “I’m sorry” written in blue ink. Sorry for what? Louis sat up even further and reached for his phone. Lots of texts saying “Get well soon!” and “Let me come and visit” were unopened. He skimmed through them, but stopped at one in particular. It was from George and it said, “You deserved it.”

Louis felt tears in his eyes. Even after him passing out in the parking lot, George still didn’t have any sympathy for him. His thought was interrupted by the curtain that surrounded his bed moving. A tall, muscular figure stood in front of him. Louis looked up and saw Harry with the saddest look on his face. They made intimate eye contact for a second before Harry bolted over to the bed, pulling Louis’ tender body as close to his as possible.

“Louis.” Harry whispered, holding him tightly. “I’m so sorry.”

“For what?” Louis asked.

Before Harry could tell him, a nurse peeked in with a clipboard. “All results came back negative.” She said, pushing her glasses closer to her face. “You just fell into a coma due to exhaust and shock.”

Harry’s eyes widened, again, pulling Louis as close as possible. “Oh my god this is amazing.” He cried out.

Louis arched his eyebrows. He was still confused why Harry was so excited.

“Thank you, nurse.” Harry said, shooing her away. He turned to Louis and said, “This is the best news ever. I thought I gave you aids.”

Louis was shocked. “You have aids?” He squeaked.

“It’s being treated.” Harry said, “I probably got it after my father died.” Tears began to form in Harry’s eyes. “I love you so much, Louis.”

“I love you too.” Louis whispered. Harry pressed his soft lips onto Louis’ and rested them there. They touched foreheads and looked into each other’s eyes. Louis was so happy Harry was here.

Their intimate moment was ruined when the nurse returned with Louis’ mother and George. They were caught mid kiss and George looked repulsed. Not knowing what to say, Louis closed his eyes and sighed. Harry stood up and sat in a small chair to the left of Louis, avoiding eye contact with George.

Louis’ mother ran up to him, kissing him on the cheek, the widest of all grins on her face. “I’m so happy you’re alive!” She said excitedly, embracing him in her soft arms.

“Yeah me too.” Louis said dully.

George moved over to Louis, a nasty look on his face. “So this is the faggot?” He stuck a meaty finger at Harry.

“Oh George stop it.” Louis’ mother commanded. “I’m tired of this.”

“This doesn’t concern you.” George said angrily.

“Leave my son alone.” She turned to George, her delicate body less than twice his size. “He just woke up from a coma.”

George went to say something, but stopped. He gave Harry a menacing look and left the room with his fists clenched together.

Louis’ mother stood up and walked over to Harry. Harry stood up, looking down into her blue eyes.

“I’m so sorry.” She whispered. Harry smiled. He could see the pain in her eyes.

The room was silent for a few minutes before a nurse came in telling Louis he had to stay the night for safety reasons and that he could pick one person to stay with him until his return home. Louis’ mother smiled and stood up. She knew Louis and Harry needed to talk. She lived with Louis. They could talk any time.

As she turned to leave, Louis grabbed her soft hand and turned her so they were face to face. “Thank you.” He said and kissed her goodbye. He had never seen his mother so concerned. He hated making people feel upset or worried. Harry was no exception.

Harry stood up and climbed on the bed beside Louis. They were shoulder to shoulder, looking into each other’s eyes. Harry slowly closed his eyes and touched his lips with Louis’. They were dry and cracked, but they still tasted and felt like Louis’. They lay there for the whole night, cuddling and holding hands and even sneaking in a kiss here and there. He couldn’t wait to get out of the hospital.

The next morning, Louis was awoken by Harry’s muscular arm lightly shaking him.

“Louis. Wake up” Harry whispered quietly. “You get to go home today.” Louis opened his eyes wide and smiled. “You stayed all night?” he asked.

“Of course!” Harry said, slowly pressing his lips onto Louis’ forehead. Louis smiled and sat up, his back leaning against the head board. A nurse walked in with a small paper cup and a pair of pajamas his mother had brought for him to come home in.

“Take these first, Mr. Tomlinson.” She handed him the pills and some water. Louis gulped them down, then grabbing the pajamas.

“You’re released today.” She said with a smile.

Louis looked at Harry excitedly. He could finally go home and relax.

“Don’t strain yourself though.” Added the nurse. “Maybe taking a bath would be beneficial. Also, take your medications three times a day for two weeks.” She handed Louis a bottle of pills. “You’re free to go when you are ready.”

The nurse left Harry and Louis alone to pack up their things and for Louis to get dressed. He slipped on his pants and walked into the lobby, grazing arms with Harry every so often. Harry had the happiest look on his face. Louis could tell he would have been worried sick. Harry’s hair was tangled and unwashed. There were bags under his eyes and a tired look on his face. Louis hated making people feel worried about him, especially Harry.

They walked over to Harry’s car and Harry helped Louis into the passenger side. The engine roared to life and Harry drove in the direction of Louis’ house. There was a happy, yet concerned look on his face. Louis could obviously tell that Harry was afraid of George, based on the way he treated Louis. Harry needed to take care of Louis with the help of his mother. He knew George would bring nothing to the table. Instead, he might take something away from Louis. Something he valued the most.
