Will Maddie be able to handle the pressure?

10. Paparazzi

The morning I woke up to the sound of pounding footsteps running up the stairs before a slam shocked me enough to send me jolting out of bed. My mum, as calm is she usually was, had slammed open my bedroom door her hair in an unkempt array of hair-rollers her face pale like snow. I barely got up off the ground rubbing my knee as she ran over to the window and slammed the curtains closed.

"Mum...?" I asked my voice groggy from the sudden wake-up shock. Getting up slowly she turned on my bedroom light went to my wardrobe and started ruffling through the racks of clothes,

"What are you looking for?" I asked, this time really looking at my mum. Like, really looking. Her eyes her wide and alert, each movement sharp and precise she turned around and a sudden smile spread across her lips,

"I just got a call from Janey. You left your cell with her after yesterday. You made it to the finals!" my mum said. My mouth dropped open before I went over to the window wondering if Lina was on her way.

"Then why did you close..." I began, pushing them slowly apart with my hands,

"NO!" my mum exclaimed seeming to dive across the floor before flashes went off before my eyes and didn't stop until shortly after my mum slammed them shut again.

"I also forgot to mention..." she huffed tiredly,

"That since that little brat Mary aided the press into put that absurd article in the paper, you're now their latest target" she said giving me a small pat on the shoulder.

I was frozen. Stiff. What the... No way! I'd made it to the finals!? They haven't disqualified me!? A small squeal escaped my lips as I jumped around trying my best to control my excitement. My mum pulled out a dry cleaning bag unzipping it to find a gorgeous, tinted-teal, silver dress I barely stopped to gape just as my mother breathed a sigh of relief.

"Just where she said it'd be" she breathed holding it out to me before going to find my shoe box and pulling out the custom-made, identical colored heels. She beamed before setting them down beside me,

"I'm going to go quickly get changed we'll be leaving soon. Lina's coming with the body guards" my mum rattled off before rushing back out of my room just as fast as she'd came in, pulling out her hair rollers in the process. I froze again. What!? Body guards!? Shaking my head I told myself to get a hold of myself, seriously... Not really. On the inside I bubbled up with excitement before pulling on my dress and slipping on the heels both of which fitted perfectly, looking in the mirror I quickly combed my hair before quickly packing a small silver purse and running to the bathroom slapped some toothpaste on my toothbrush before slamming it in my mouth brushing away as I slowly made my way down the stairs my mum quickly buttoning up her best lawyer suit and slipping on her Mrs-Sensible shoes before following closely behind.

A knock at the door caused us both to glance at one another before I rushed to spit in the down stairs bathroom sink quickly rinsing as my mum went to check through the eye-hole quickly opening the door to let Lina, the dozen body guards, and the noise of shouts and calls of questions all for... me, inside before slamming closed the door.

"Okay lets go" Lina said hopping up and down excitedly in her red dress my mum rushing to grab our toast as I came out,

"Okay lets go!" I said unable to control my excitement as we went outside. That was probably when it got even more adrenalin pumping as the guards kept away the masses of press and paparazzi as we made our way directly to the Silke's family Bentley. Sliding in the back I wasn't surprised when only one body guard joined us inside, though it was huge and lavish I doubted that the other 11 body-guards would've been able to make it inside, which was probably why they all hopped in the black van that followed us as the car began to drive. Lina gave me an excited smile,

"Finals so soon right? Who would've known they were going to be this close together...!" Lina exclaimed. My head buzzed with excitement unlike my mother who had stepped into lawyer mode and was carefully applying her cherry-red lipstick with surprising ease.

Arriving the the location the car passed the mass of paparazzi surrounding the building the car horn went right off to work getting them out of the way so we could drive into the private car park beneath the building. Driving in the body-guard shielded me from getting caught in any photos from the left side of the car whilst Lina posed directly in front of me on the other side, something she'd always been good at. I was slowly becoming able to calm down as the doors opened and there was nobody there but my mum, Lina and I getting out of the car (and the body guards of course, but they probably weren't going to be needed to much longer). Heading towards the elevator my heart skipped a beat as we hit the stage level the doors opening.

My mouth dropped open as we walked out onto the back stage of the finals set. This time they'd be live. I could hear the excited buzz of the audience on the other side of the closed theater curtains. Turning I almost slammed straight into somebody as a pair of strong arms set my directly to the side looking up I gave a small sigh of relief and happiness. Niall.

"Come on Maddie we need to go and get your mike set up!" Lina called over to me already talking to the stage manager discussing and organizing the technical support I'd be needing for my performance. Giving him a small apologetic smile before quickly rushing to stand beside Lina before hands appeared out of nowhere, one handing me a microphone another attaching an ear-piece and a few more adjusting my dress and combing my hair back into place.

"What number am I?" I asked Lina, she checked the schedule.

"We're actually just on time they started around 7am this morning its 11am now and your the last to perform before the judging and final deliberation. Results are a whole other show, so you don't need to worry about those right now" Lina informed me causing me to quake in my shoes nervously. I wiped my palms on my dress, biting my lower lip nervously.

My hands shook as I heard my name being called out a cheer rose from the crowd a few boos as I went out on stage my eyes narrowing slightly from the glare of the stage lights,

"Name and song. Good luck" Niall said in my ear-piece, a charming smile spread across my lips.

"My names Maddie Groves and I'll be singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow from the film The Wizard of Oz" I said,

"What did you choose this song?" Simon asked from the judging panel, I looked down for a moment before looking up and a small smile graced my lips as I shrugged,

"I guess ever since I've been young this is what I've wanted to do. Sing and perform in front of hundreds, thousands, millions of people... Finally making it here is right now the closest I've ever been to having my biggest dreams come true" I said, they nodded allowing me to begin. I took a deep breath as the music begun, and began to sing.

*          *          *          *          *

The cheers were incredible I nearly got blown back by the audiences response to my performance, I was so blown away and happy I started to feel the ache of smiling especially in my cheeks due to the fact I couldn't wipe the grin off my face. I was surprised to see my dad in the front row, we hadn't talked a lot ever since he moved me to Redmonds but I still loved him. Giving him a wave he beamed his face lighting up like it always had before our argument, it all seemed so pointless now. Beaming I waited as the other contestants were called back on stage, I wasn't surprised to see Mary not there. How could she have been? She'd been arrested during the contest, breaking the rules and immediately qualifying her for disqualification.

"That was a wonderful performance by Maddie Groves everyone!" the host announced everyone cheering again, he then turned to gesture to everyone.

"So these are your final 12 girls, next week the judges will announce the 3 lucky girls who are going to be a part of the newest super star, girl band sensation: Infinity Girls!" the judge announced only calling on more cheering.

"Now before we leave you all, there's been some talk and speculation about one of our contestants in the show..." he began my mind thinking defiantly of Mary, poor girl.

"...Who wasn't disqualified after rumors spread she used her relationship with Niall Horan to get this far into the competition. Maddie I've got just one very important question to ask you..." the host began turning to me. My heart sunk, my head felt slightly giddy as I tried to remain in control. What? This wasn't really happening right? I nodded for the host to continue,

"If you had to choose over Niall Horan or your chance to stay in the contest which would you choose?" he asked. My stomach dropped, I couldn't choose. I loved Niall so much, but the contest and becoming the singer I'd always wanted to be even if it was for me to be in a girl band... I couldn't choose. My eyes teared up,

"I don't think I can answer that" I choked out, suddenly everything seemed too much and I took off stage. Lina caught my arm and she shushed me gently as I reached the side. What had I done?

"Shh, It's going to be okay..." she assured me, but shrugging her off I wondered off to find Niall. Try to explain.

I saw him walking out of the controls room a dark look passing over his face,

"Niall..." I choked out he saw me and his expression darkened even further. He sighed as I came up to him, he clenched his fists by his side. He was furious. He had every right to be.

"I thought you were different Maddie. I thought you didn't want to be with me before of the fame..." he said. If I wasn't already upset I would've just gaped, but tears streaming down my cheeks I reached out to touch him but he pulled away.

"I'm not after your fame Niall... I just couldn't choose between..." I began,

"What?" he interrupted,

"Me or the contest? It's just a stupid contest Maddie, there will always be other chances to do music when your with me" he said. I dropped my hand, what did that mean?

"I wanted to earn it myself..." I tried to explain. He shook his head,

"Look Maddie, I know what it's like. It's hard being a fan-girl, you want the fame but you also want me" he said,

"I don't sing for the fame..." my voice dropped again. Where was all this coming from? Was this really what Niall thought of me?

"You couldn't choose between me or the contest could you Maddie? Couldn't even choose me over a contest... Well this is me making it easier for you" he said, turning away.

"Wait... Niall wait!" I called out trying to catch up but falling. Hard, and on my face. I whimpered as I scraped my elbow and got up shaking slightly as tears threatened to fall once more as Niall paused at the door looking over his shoulder at me,

"It's over Mads" he said, and then... He was gone.
