8. On High

Something told me my day was only going to get better. Even as school went by filled with the gossip and not-so-temporary shock of the schools 'head girl' being arrested in the early morning, I knew somewhere in my mind that things were going to pick up. Why? Well, yes, I guess because Mary Dow wouldn't have the chance to rain on my parade at the evening second-round performances (Yes, a pun but so classic). Sitting through my last class of the day which was music theory I was humming along to 'Up All Night' obviously by One Direction even as I dawdled whilst jotting down the notes to the class's listening task. The bell rang and getting up I picked up my sheet filing along last in the line holding the dress in it's case over the back of my shoulder as I handed our teacher Mr Flank the sheet. He glanced at it and raised an eyebrow in surprise,

"This is good Maddie. I'm actually quite surprised, I saw you humming along there by yourself this lesson and was sure you weren't paying attention but it seems you've proved me wrong" he exclaimed, I flashed him one of my don't-I-always smiles before headed out the door.

"What's the dry cleaning bag for? Oh, I get it taking the parents washing on the way to cut back costs..." he said before muttering off to himself. I sighed at how prejudiced Mr Flank and the majority of other teachers were as to knowing the reason to why I'd been transferred from MPC to Redmonds, because in actual fact:

1. No, my father hadn't lost his job as a CEO

2. No, my mother didn't lose her job either as a Chartered Accountant

3. No, my brother hadn't crashed the family Mercedes so the family had to down size on the costs to make up the money for repairs since he didn't have insurance.

But I'd learned from an early age that trying to explain all of this and more to the teachers who in the end will never really understand you, was indeed as it sounded. Pointless.

Heading to the front of the school a huge smile spread across my face to see Lina waiting in her brother's Alpha Romeo. I got into the front passenger seat raising an eyebrow at the cute, pink, frilly dress she was wearing. As she began to drive away from the curb I sat back and eyed her suspiciously,

"So... I'm surprised you finished early enough to run home and change into something before coming to pick me up" I said not bothering to mention that Janey was meant to have picked me up. They always did that, swap driving roles every now and then. As the youngest of the three of us I hadn't gotten my license. Hell, I hadn't even gotten my learners permit even because I was constantly being chauffeured around by my best-friends in their way to expensive family cars. Yes, I, Maddie Groves, was a very spoiled girl. Lina didn't meet my eyes but I spotted her cheeks turning pink a little as we turned onto the set street,

"Well I have got to look my best for Harry. We are having a little date afterwards" she said quietly. My eyes widened and my mouth gaped open in complete, and utter shock. Selina Silke who got nervous even at the mention of Harry Styles, was going on a date with him!?

"No way" I said, as she turned into the parking lot, she nodded her smile widening,

"Yes way" she said parking the car and turning off the engine. Opening her car door she turned to see me still staring at her, she blushed a little more before pulling a weird face.

"Now, hurry up and lets go get you changed. I think I forgot to tell you before but your school uniform is really ugly" she said eying the plain maroon red skirt and grey sweater. I quickly turned around grabbing my smaller purse I'd prepared earlier and bag of shoes not to mention the oh-so important dress that I swung over my shoulder before closing the door quickly and racing around the other side to try and keep up with Lina who was already stalking towards the entrance using the car remote to lock the car as we went inside.

"I forgot to ask you this before but do you think there's even a possibility Mary will get kicked out of the contest since she got arrested?" Lina asked leaning against the toilet cubicle door after 10 minutes of which whilst I'd been getting changed I'd explained the whole situation of recent events to her. I shrugged as I zipped up my dress and stepped into my heels shoving my uniform into the bag the heels had been in with my school shoes and what-not whilst slipping my purse over my shoulder.

"I really don't know" I admitted opening the door only to jump back as Lina went sprawling backwards she caught herself her arms spread out wide the tips of her fingers holding onto either side of the doorway.

"Why does this always happen to me?" she wondered aloud before moving back out and forward allowing me to step out with her checking our appearances in the wall-covering mirror.

"Do you think my butt looks big in this?" she asked motioning to her purse, I bit my lip trying not to laugh.

"Lina you're not wearing your purse around your butt" I replied causing her to scowl as a laugh escaped my lips,

"Hey that's not funny. It just hangs beside it okay? It still counts!" she assured me letting it drop and turning from side to side as it trying to distinguish the non-existent faults in her flawless, curvy body-shape.

"When's Janey going to be here?" I muttered checking my watch, my performance was going to be in 5 minutes.

"Don't worry about her let's just go, we better go early. If Mary doesn't show up that's around 3 minutes off the clock" Lina advised me. Nodding in agreement we both grabbed my stuff and went out the door headed to the biggest performance in my life so far.

"Maddie Groves" a voice called out my name just as we turned up in the waiting room, I loaded my bags and put my cell on silent giving it to Lina who mouthed 'good luck' before I went quickly and took my name tag. Pinning it on my dress, I then followed her to the side-stage taking the microphone and plugging in my ear piece as I went out on stage the stage lights blinding me for a second before I met the eyes of a few new judges - 3 to be exact all of whom I noticed were on top of the music business the only person I could remember the name of was the biggest judge of them all, the one who'd created One Direction: Simon Cowell. My heart sped up to what felt like a million miles an hour as I stepped forward right on the spot all the second round performances would be performed on, seeing the familiar faces of the One Direction boys in the typical audience seats I tried not to smile as Niall and the others gave me their cheesiest thumbs-up.

"Name and song" the voice in the ear-phone instructed,

"My name is Maddie Groves and I'll be singing Skyscraper by Demi Lovato" I said,

"I chose this song because... well, it kind of mirrors the emotions that have kind of crept into my life lately" I finished before taking a deep breath and begun my song.
