7. Change in Fate

I closed my eyes lifting my face to soak in the ever-so-warm water of the shower in One Directions apartment. Niall had insisted I get cleaned up before we went on our date, which he also assured me was still on. I smiled gently my swollen eyes stinging from the tears I'd cried. I felt so happy knowing Mary or no Mary, I was going to be going on my first initial date with Niall Horan. Quickly turning off the shower I stepped out and dried myself with a towel a gentle knock on the door before Lina popped her head in, a small bashful smile on her lips. Niall had told me to call whoever I needed from his cell which of course I denied before calling Lina and Janey on my cell before getting in the shower. I was guessing from the dream-state, calmness of Lina's face that she'd bumped into Harry on her way. She came inside and shut the door dropping her Prada tote slowly as she let her feet slide her back moving down against the door until she sat on the ground against the door, legs sprawled out before her, completed mystified. Yes, that's right. Harry Styles had shocked Selina Silke into shutting her usual-blabbering-trap. I gave her a sly smile before she sighed as she pulled out her hair dryer without even looking as she stared off into limbo and handed it to me. I took it and plugging it in I turned it on and began drying my hair.

"So, you bumped into Harry yet?" I asked cautiously unsure of how she'd react. The good thing about Lina's hair dryer was that it was super-sonic-silent which was why her Aunt Hilary who'd designed it had called it the '3S Hair Dryer' - literally. Lina shook her head slowly,

"Oh Maddie, Maddie, Maddie..." she sighed staring up at the ceiling a completely happy smile spreading across her lips,

"Not only did I meet the Harry Styles, I also got a hug from him!" she whispered giving a small squeal. I tried not to laugh at my usually over-confident, best-friend.

The door was then pushed open by a fuming Janey who knocked Lina out of the way before squeezing inside and slamming the door shut.

"Whoever the guy is with black hair is a..." she began to curse,

"Janey..." I warned giving her the you-shouldn't-really-be-talking-like-that glance, she sighed calming down a bit enough for me to notice the beautiful long white gown she was wearing.

"You look beautiful! What's the occasion?" I asked as she handed me some under clothing and other things before pulling out an exact replica of the dress she'd given me to wear at first for the date. My mouth gaped open,

"When did you make this!?" I asked hurriedly throwing everything on,

"This dress I'm wearing is an experiment for some side project I was working on. That..." Janey continued nodding to the dress I was struggling to slip on before Lina got up and helped me,

"Was a replacement dress. Every designer makes two of everything. There's always a back up" she said smiling satisfied as she had earlier as I turned to look at my reflection. Lina smiled also happy for me, looking at them both I teared up,

"You two are the best-friends..." I began, Janey turned and began packing before Lina punched my arm. Hard.

"Girl grow some muscle and stop crying. You've already got swollen eyes" Lina scolded me though I knew they were both grinning hard behind their turned backs as they packed everything up. There was a knock at the door before Liam stuck his head in,

"Hey girls..." he began, Lina screamed before Janey pushed his head back out before slamming the door closed locking it this time.

"Okay, let's just get out of here" she said.

Filing out of the bathroom I watched as Harry eyed the completely oblivious Lina whilst she fiddled around with her short yellow dress her Prada tote nearly knocking anyone who was in the way as she swayed back and forth her eyes glued to her shoes as she fiddled with a strand of her luscious, red hair between her fingers. Janey on the other hand was openly arguing with the completely obsessed Zayn who seemed to be having a hard time keeping his eyes to himself as he eyes Janey's flawless features endlessly. I stepped out and locked eyes with Niall smiling shyly before he came forward and offered me his arm, I linked mine in his before we headed back out the front of the apartment,

"I'll see you later Mads, I've got work to do" Janey huffed angrily as we went outside to say our goodbyes, I smiled nodding before seeing her trip down the stairs her scream followed with an,

"Ouch!" sparked some kind of super-hero thing in Zayn because next thing that happened he was bolting down the stairs to help her. I knew they defiantly had some undeniable chemistry between the both of them, even if Janey was a bit of a realist. I said a cheerful good bye to Liam, Louis and Harry who seemed to have his eyes glued to Lina's own eyes though she never looked up from her feet.

"Hey, it was nice meeting you Lina. Maybe we should catch up sometime?" Harry asked Lina who's head shot up straight away, he pressed his lips together biting back a smile unlike Lina who had a huge smile plastered all over her adorably shy face,

"Sure" she squeaked, he held out her hand and scribbled down his cell number before handing her the pen so she wrote her number on his. Holding the pen out for him to take he grabbed her wrist drawing her near before his lips went beside her ear and I could barely make out when he said,

"You're also really cute" causing Lina to blush uncontrollably. Giving Niall a pointed glance we raised our eyebrows at the conspicuous scene opening up right beside us. Heading down the stairs we tried to avoid the extremely close conversation Janey seemed to be having with Zayn on the stairs, one that involved a lot of lip-locking before we reached down the stairs and got into the limo.

"So what's the plan for our date?" I asked,

"How about dinner?" Niall offered.

The next morning I woke beside Janey after returning from the date for our little sleep over still feeling the faint flutter of butterflies in my stomach, a smile already on my face it hurt my cheeks as I shut my eyes pulling my pillow out from beneath my head and pulling it down over my face squealing with happiness. Janey stirred before falling off the bed the loud thump startling me into jumping up to see if she was alright and startling her to wake up,

"Zayn is so dumb..." she murmured as her eyes opened slowly before she closed her eyes and lay back down on the ground hugging her pillow close to her a small snore escaping her nose. I bit my lower lip trying not to giggle as I quickly went to find my uniform and get ready for school. Turning on the radio I danced around a bit as I put some toast on for us my cell vibrating on the counter as I did so, checking my phone I had three text messages. The first was from Niall thanking me for being such a wonderful date (he had no idea how nice he was yesterday), the second from the search for Infinity Girls notifying me that our second round of auditions was on today after school and the third from mum apologizing for something to do with the police. I froze. Before starting to panic with both uncontrollable shock and excitement.

"Janey...!" I squealed, jumping up and down I checked the time. I still had time to organize an outfit for the second round of the performances for the Infinity Girls. Janey walked in rubbing the sleep from her eyes, before taking my mobile from my hand and scanned my messages. Her eyes nearly bulging out of her head,

"This afternoon!?" she gaped, I nodded fervently, she quickly ditched my mobile before running upstairs probably to the closet room I'd only ever been in once and decided I never wanted to go into again. Every piece of clothing in that room was so beautiful that I'd been scared of touching any of it. Even Lina didn't like it in there even though she could probably afford to buy her favourite items with her daddy's credit card in that room. I froze in excitement before rushing to put on my uniform and quickly brush my hair and then teeth.

By the time I'd finished and came out to grab my toast, Janey had already set an aqua-blue, layered, summer dress with beads and sequins spiraling down from the bodice beside my school bag. Trying not to stare too much I quickly grabbed my toast and went to put on my bag just in time for the front door opening to see Janey's dad Harold walk in. He gave me a small tired nod,

"Good morning Madeline" he said, before tiredly stumbling up the stairs to his bedroom. There was a thump and then the sound of dragging before the slam of a door, and next thing I knew Janey was straightening her uniform as she came down the stairs her bag over one shoulder grabbing her toast she turned off the power point before grabbing her dads car keys, she gave me a look.

"Did you have to drag him into bed?" I asked feeling for her. Janey's dad was hardly home and always away at work, that's why at least once a week I stayed over to keep her company. When I did see her dad though he was always doing weird things, like calling me 'Madeline' even though Maddie isn't a nickname, or brushing his teeth using the handle of his tooth brush against his teeth, once I'd even caught him trying to wheel the garbage bin out for collection - he ended up making a dent in the neighbors bright, red Chevy.

"Yeah. But hey, at least we get the SUV" she grinned, we both loved that car the best. Not only was it the biggest of all her dad's cars but it had... give me a second. Television. Not a big deal right? But when it had Foxtel TV when you can get anything you want on demand, I guess having a rich dad did give you the perks occasionally.

Arriving at school my mouth gaped open at the amount of police cars outside the school (okay there were only 3 but they were the most police cars I'd ever seen not doing road-side patrol).

"See you later Mads" Janey called as I shut the door behind me before she drove off. I squeezed through the gathering crowds of students and just as I was about to enter the school saw that almost too familiar face of Mary Dow being led with a few other of her friends into the cop car, their hands bound by hand-cuffs. She turned and glanced at me and the small, cruel, glare she threw me lasted under a second before the officer pushed her head down as she got into the back seat. I knew that kind of glare it was the I'll-get-you-back glare, the kind I probably didn't want to be getting from Mary at the time but wasn't think about that too much because I was still in shock. Remembering my mums text it dawned on me why Mary had been arrested. Continuing my walk into school once more I wondered why I doubted that Mary would get caught. She wasn't some powerful, law breaker who'd been running for years. Mary Dow was just a school yard bully. That day, karma had brought Mary Dow down. But something inside me told me, that wasn't going to be the last I'd see of her.
