Just a Girl

I have always been fascinated with history and this movella is about a 12 year old child factory worker in Victorian times during the Industrial Revolution. It's
working progress so may take a while to develop.

It's basically a short story about the horror of being a child worker in Victorian times.

2. Early to Rise

I woke up at dawn. This is usual for me. If I didn't then father would wake me.

We don't trust our employers at the factory. They sometimes turn the clocks an hour forward so that we'll be punished for being late even if we are on time. This is normally a beating.

I ate no breakfast this morning. We are too poor to afford it everyday. I grabbed my cloak and hurried to the factory with my three older sisters. Rosa, the youngest, stays at home with mother. It was a bitter morning. Snow drifted down from the sky. The snow turned the filthy street pure white. Our thin cloaks barely kept out the chill. I shivered as a chilling wind bit my skin. It swept my hair and chilled me to the bone. The factory loomed before us. It's dark windows stared at us with an angry glare. Other people were arriving at the same time. Their thin, sunken faces showed no emotion. They stared straight ahead. My sisters and me stayed close as we joined the mass crowds entering the factory for the working day. Even on entering and leaving we were watched at all times. It would be pay day tomorrow. Even then we were paid pitiful wages. But at least it made the work worth doing.

I lined up with the other children in front of the machines. We waited to go underneath the machines to clean them. I could no longer see my sisters. Two of the eldest, Susan and Victoria, have the job of threading while the rest of us have to clean them. "Get going!" a voice ordered rudely. This was our boss. We quickly crawled underneath the machines and waited for them to turn on. As I crouched low, waiting, I hoped and prayed that no accidents would happen today. Especially not to me or my sisters. With a rumble the machines began to move.
