6. Dreams

"Arigen." My sisters voice! It was really her voice! "Don't get too excited, Arigen. This is just a dream." I heard her say.

"But why are you in my dream? And where are you?" I asked frantically. All I could see was jet black, all around me. Nothing but black. I continiued to turn around, desperately looking for my sister. I couldn't see her anywhere.

"You can't see me - you can only hear me. People cannot see spirits. But spirits can see people. And, as you may have guessed, I am a spirit now. I should also mention that some spirits can enter dragon rider's dreams. I am presently entering yours. Anyway, this discussion has no real importance, so let me change the subject. You must forgive Alvyss. Please. There was nothing he could have done. But do not press him for the story. I cannot tell you, for if he wishes for the story to remain untold, then it shall remain untold. But you must not get angry with him. It will get you nowhere." she said, her voice so silky, soft, and beautiful.

"Okay." I replied, although I was still wishing that she would tell me what happened.

And then I remembered something she had said to me.

"Wait." I said. "You told me that some spirits can come into dragon riders dreams. I'm not a dragon rider!" I heard my sister laugh at my shock and confusion.

"Yes, you really are, Arigen. You just didn't realise it. This is I have entered your dream, to tell you who you are."

"But I don't want to be a dragon rider!" I protested. Could I really be a legendary dragon rider? Was it really possible?

"Well, Arigen. You are a dragon  rider. Anyway, please let me finish." she sighed, and I shut up. "You know that the evil armies have been causing trouble for as long as you have lived?" she asked, and I nodded. She seemed to see me nod, and carried on speaking.

"You were born at exactly the same time as the hero from the legends was born. It's recorded in your scroll of birth exactly what time you are born. It has to be recorded, god knows why... Anyway, its recorded in books about the hero, that he was born thirteen seconds after the seventeenth minute of the the twenty-first hour, on the seventh day of September. Think about it, Arigen. That was when you were born." she paused for a minute, letting me take it in. It did make sense...

"Its just a coincidence..." I murmured, knowing that what I had said was a complete lie. I was just trying to make myself believe that no, I wasn't a dragon rider.

"It's not. I could see, you always prefered the company of animals to the company of people. All the animals loved you. Even Shadow seems to like you. And he's ranger trained - meaning he is usually very untrusting. And your senses are sharper than other people's. Like the hero's. Remember, he had great senses. So what's your answer to that, then, Arigen?" She asked, and I imagined her with a triumphant smile on her face. I sighed. She had won.

"I don't have an answer." I sighed. "But... Since when have you known I was a dragon rider?"

"Since I became a spirit. I will not explain it to you how I know - I will tell you at a later stage in your journey. Do you understand?" she asked, and I nodded. She was my sister - anything she said was fine by me.

"Good." she said. "Now, your dream's about to end soon. So I have to tell you your first task. You need to find a dragon egg in the Forest of Nightmares. It's mother was killed by human poachers, and it will soon die if it doesn't hatch. Your touch will awaken it. Then, you must name it, and ask it to take you to the cave of dragon riders. The legend goes that only a dragon, hatched and named by a dragon rider, can find it. So when it hatches, then look after it, and let it guide you. I will not be able to speak with you for another four days now - that is how long it takes for your mind to allow spirits in again. But don't worry - I always be watching you. And tell Alvyss that it wasn't his fault! Say he's doing me a favour by accepting that!"

And then her voice was gone.
