Chase

One of the last two natural-born Demon Hunters left in the world, Chase is part of a team that includes her father Caleb and her boyfriend Alex.

They are intent on capturing an enemy who escaped the trap they'd set for several members of his kind.

They want one of them alive to see if they have any information about who killed two of their allies and the whereabouts of Jak the other Demon Hunter.

However tensions between Chase, Caleb and Alex might just threaten the mission and endanger themselves and everyone on the planet.

As the threat they face could prove bigger than anything they've ever confronted before.

20. Present and Accounted For Chapter 1

Alex was sitting opposite Caleb  talking honestly to him, probably for the first time.

The mess this mission had become had opened his eyes to just how little belief or interest Caleb had shown in him since they met and he was finally ready to unburden himself about it.

"All of this is your fault, you bastard, it's all your fault." Alex said to Caleb being unusually brave in speaking his mind.

"You and your single-minded arrogance have ruined my relationship with Chase."

"You've even damaged the relationship between me and my brother and you have never been anything like the father figure I hoped you'd be to me."

"All I ever wanted from the time I met you was your respect, you should have seen me, seen that I am twice the team member my brother is, or ever will be."

"It never came as easy to me, I was half Mal's size, so I had to work out more, to get bigger and stronger.I had to study harder to get on your team, now I know more about Demons, about the cults that worship them."

"I am quicker, smarter, more dedicated and more loyal to you, to the mission, to your daughter. All the while what have I gotten for it, nothing."

"You want to know the real reason you should have been kinder to me, why you should treat me with more respect, because of all the things I know about you.I could ruin you, and you think your precious little girl is angry with you now, there are truths you've kept from her that would destroy whatever is left of her love for you."

"You think that pathetic slap she gave you for blowing up that boy hurt, if she knew what you've hidden from her, her whole life, I honestly believe that she would kill you!"

"You had no idea that I knew your dirty little secrets did you?" Alex said with a smile on his face, glad for the first time to have the upper hand with Caleb.

"You've always underestimated me, undervalued me, that's why I never get what I deserve, which is this team and your daughter, but I want them and one day I assure you, I will get them."

"You have no idea how resourceful I can be to  get what I want. I mean, look at how I got us, me and Mal free from the cult of Amarohs."

"It was me who planned our escape, it was me who found out about you, then contacted you and gave you the location of the compound so you could raid the place. Too bad your people back then couldn't stop some of them getting away, taking Amarohs with them."

“Even after we were away from the cult. Just knowing she was still alive meant, that wouldn’t be possible, I had to do something about it, so I did.”

"I killed Amorohs, yet you believed Mal when he told you he did it as we fled for our lives, except stabbing one of those things through the heart isn't good enough to kill an actual Vampyre is it, you know it and I know it.”

“Only in fiction can you simply put a stake through a Vampyre's heart to kill it, in the real world you cut its head off and burn it, you burn the whole body. That's how you kill a Vampyre."

"Still in all this time you never even asked me about it, you just assume I don't have it in me."

"I knew where that thing would go, where its other hideouts where, so I took a sword and a flamethrower and hacked it to pieces. After I took its head off, I lit that creature up and stayed to watch it until it burned to ash."

"That's why I should have been your first choice to lead this team, not given it as a consolation prize after my brother quit and stormed off after his break up with Chase."

"I plan and I carry out what I want, I waited and I finally got Chase, sure it was like getting my brothers sloppy left overs, but I did get her to see me as more than a friend once, I know I can do it again and next time it will be forever."

"When that day comes, I don't imagine you or Mal being around to ruin it. The way your actions and my interfering brother coming back when he wasn't needed or wanted may have ruined it for me for now."

"Yes, before you say it, I know my own weaknesses played a part in causing her to turn her back on me."

"All that whining and self-pity on the mission about how I stood by and let you kill that stupid kid."

"I let you get in my head with your ultimatum about ending it with her. Then there was your dire prediction of her future and how easily it seems for you to cast me aside. That upset me, and after that I was even more determined to get on your good side, but I see now that was a mistake, I know now that I'm never going to earn your trust."

"From now on I know it will be hard, but I will be less pathetically desperate to earn your approval. If I had been in my right frame of mind, I would have sided with Chase against you, I would happily have helped her beat you down and saved that kid regardless of the fact I didn't care whether he lived or died."

"No, what matters to me is that siding with Chase would have kept me in her good favour, that if it came down to it, she would've have seen me as more of a man and I think we'd still be seeing each other and we'd both tell you to get lost." Alex smiled and chuckled at the thought of telling Caleb that.

"Honestly, that one moment of weakness and you're never going to let me forget it, are you?” Alex wasn't entirely who he was talking to when he said that. Was he talking to himself, to Caleb or was he having an imaginary conversation with Chase.

"For a moment I looked at that stupid kid and I saw me at that age, a kid sucked into a life he wanted no part of. That moment of hesitation, I gave him long enough to show some sense and run away." Alex thought to himself.

“If only you hadn't seen it, he would have been free, we would have captured one of the people living in that apartment block, they would have spilled their guts under interrogation and we still could have hit their compound, but the great and powerful Caleb had to ruin it and look what happened.”

"You know, if I had that moment to do all over again, I would kill that worthless little dralk brat myself."

"If I had run this mission it would have turned out better, I didn’t have any real connection to Baine or Isobel, so my thinking wasn’t clouded by emotion. As motivated as I was to punish the evil bastards who killed them, I wouldn't have wasted all my time and energy, turning this into a revenge mission.

"I would have been better at targeting all those Demon Worshipping groups and we would have gotten to the right one quicker and with a less bloody trail of dead bodies in our wake."

"That didn't happen and we followed you, now because of you and Chase being driven by your grief, look where we are. We have a load of dead bodies on our side and theirs, some of them might have gotten away. We're not sure, although if they survive their surgeries we do have those two brats who tried to kill us in custody."

"Excellent, I'm sure they'll be tremendously helpful and in the mean time Mal is lying on the operating table again and like I said already, for all I know, Chase is dead."

"The great and powerful Caleb Demetros warrior, practitioner of magyk, psychic manipulator and father too one of the last Demon Hunters on earth, who has it seems lost complete track of the only other one we've got."

"All in all you're the disgrace, you're the worthless drelk. The one we can point to and say it was his fault when anyone asks with their dying breath, so whose fault was it the Human race was just exterminated."

With that Alex took his feet down off the hospital bed where he had rested them, stood up and headed back to his room.

Alex felt a huge sense of relief at unloading on Caleb, even if it was only a fraction of the resentments he'd built up over the years.

Although the only reason he felt that it was okay to unload all that was because he knew Caleb would have no idea of anything he had just said to him as he was still in the coma he'd been in since they had been brought to the township's hospital two days ago.
