Well, Grace's newest obsession is a little band called One Direction. Dani is constantly hearing about tour dates, concerts, and interviews, but had never heard their music or seen their pictures. Just another boy band, right?

16. Enemies

Everyone left me alone for the rest of the day. I needed to be alone, because the sudden apiphiny that I had killed me inside.

You know those realizations that just hit you out of nowhere? You could be thinking about ice cream, and then you suddenly feel self conscious because you don't look perfect. That was exactly what was happening to me now.

"I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword, my shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you know there was never
Never an honest word
That was when I ruled the word." I sang, strumming the repeating chords on my guitar.

The door to my bedroom cracked open, and Niall knocked on the wall. I ignored him completely, continuing with the second verse to Viva La Vida.

"You have a nice voice." Niall complimented, but I continued to ignore him.

"Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string..." I trailed off, as my fingers stopped strumming and my eyes dropped to the ground.

"Oh, who would ever want to be king." I whispered the last line, squeezing my eyes shut.

I felt Niall sit down on the bed next to me, but I ignored him once more.

"Are you okay, babe?" he finally asked.

I shook my head, and Niall sighed, "Tell me. Please?"

I sniffed back a tear, "What's to tell?"

"How about the reason you think you aren't needed? What does that even mean?"

I sniffed again, "I'm a walking picture. Just a pretty face for people to stare at. But I'm hollow, Niall. I'm nothing special, I'm nothing interesting. Nobody needs me. I'm just...there."

Niall just shook his head and slipped my guitar out of my hands. He started strumming a familiar tune, and I smiled.

"It's everything about you, you, you
Everything that you do, do, do
From the way that we touch baby
To the way that you kiss on me
It's everything about you, you, you
The way you make me feel new, new, new
Like every party is just us two
And there's nothing I could point to
It's everything about you."

I rolled my eyes at the Irish boy, and took the guitar back. I set it back in its case, before turning back to Niall, "That doesn't mean anything."

"Yes it does." he argued, "You are an amazing girl, Dani. Don't ever think otherwise."

"You only like me for my looks. That's the only reason anyone likes me. It's apparently the only thing I've got."

Niall looked angry, "You really think I'm that shallow?!"

"No." I said honestly, "I'm sorry, I just...I've never met anyone who was different, you know? I honestly almost gave up on myself. But you...changed that."

"You are a guitarist, a surfer, and an amazing girl, Dani. Don't doubt yourself."

I nodded and rested my head on his shoulder, "Thanks for being here."

Niall smiled, "Anytime."

"Stay away from me, Niall!" I warned.

"But Dani! I just want to help!" he whined.

I sighed, "Fine. You can cut up some mushrooms."

I was currently in the kitchen, making everyone a traditional Italian dinner. Which basically meant a very fancy spaghetti and meatballs.

Everyone was down at the beach again, but I stayed back to cook. I wanted Harry to help me, because he's actually pretty good in the kitchen, but I unfortunately got stuck with Niall.

"I've never had your cooking before." Niall said, "But this looks good."

I smiled and bumped my hip against his playfully. Niall smiled, and dumped the mushrooms into the sauce. I grinned and flicked a bit of Parmesan cheese at his face. Niall immediately tossed some green onion at me, and the war started. Cheese, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, and noodles were everywhere, and Niall and I were covered. We suddenly heard the door open, and I tried to brush the food out of my hair, but failing.

"Dani! We have a surprise!" Louis' voice called from the doorway.

I shoved Niall playfully and I made my way out of the kitchen, while he stayed and watched the food.

When I saw it, my smile quickly faded.

A girl stood in front of me, with curly, short, strawberry blonde hair and freckles that dotted her cheeks. Her eyes were big and green, and framed with a pair of glasses. She was gorgeous, but unfortunately familiar.

"It took awhile, but we finally translated what she said! She says she knows you!" Harry cried, obviously proud of himself.

"Dani! You never told me you had a best friend here!" Grace cried.

My eyes narrowed, "I did. Not anymore."

"Ciao, Dani." she said.

"Ciao, Piper." I replied.

Piper's eyes narrowed as well, and she took a step towards me, "E 'stato un po'. Come stai?"

"Dani, can you translate this conversation for us?" Sam asked.

I sighed, "She says it's been awhile, and asked how I was doing. Penso che sai già che, Piper. Sono stato meglio senza di te."

Piper smirked, "Oh, davvero? Perché ho sentito i tuoi genitori sono morti."

My heart clenched inside my chest, and my glare turned to pain. I sighed before translating, "She heard about my parents. But she doesn't care."

"Woah, I thought she was your friend!" Zayn cried.

"Hardly. She was, but then life became a competition between us. She's my biggest rival, and I never wanted to compete in the first place." I said, before turning to Piper, "È ovviamente ancora mi odiano. Allora perché sei qui?"

"Hai lasciato con il lavoro incompiuto, Dani. Sono venuto a risolvere il nostro argomento." Piper replied.

"She says we have unfinished business. She came to settle our argument." I translated, "Quale argomento?"

Suddenly, Piper spoke English with a heavy accent, "The one that proves I'm better than the great Dani Cross."
