Chapter Sixteen:

It was nearing midnight when the old wizard reached the meeting point in the woods. The sun had long gone down and the wind was once again stirring up leaves and branches around him. He was alone, his visitor had yet to show himself, but he wouldn't be far.

He knew, that the woods were dangerous that evening, not because of wolves or other harmful creatures, but because the chosen ones were less than a mile away. He had no way of knowing that the wizard wasn't luring him into a trap. Once he was certain there was no trap, he would surely appear.

"There is no trap, old friend. There is only me.” The wizard said, speaking with such conviction that his visitor had no doubt, and dared venture out into the small forest opening.

"Are they making progress?” The visitor asked.

"Indeed.” The wizard walked two steps away and stood with his back towards his friend. “I believe you've already heard of a couple of them.”

"I assume you're talking about Miss Maroon and the young fisherman.” The visitor showed no hint of emotion at the names, but the bare mention of young Beatrice had to bring up sour memories.

"Miss Maroon is taking after her grandmother.” At this, the visitor flinched. Several years ago, Beatrice Maroon's grandmother, Eleanor Maroon, had tried to use her powers to defeat the emperor, but what the people of the country only knew as foolishness, had actually been an almost successful attempt at taking the emperor's life.

"She is becoming quite powerful. In fact, I believe she will be at her strongest within a few months.” The wizard continued. “Maybe even sooner.”

"We cant have that, now can we?” The visitor asked, expecting no answer. “We must prepare to stop them. Sooner rather than later.”
