Chapter Eight:

Bea had managed to disappear into the woods just before the curfew. The train had been delayed, so she had had to get off at a stop earlier than she had planned on to get away in time. The guy, Devin, had been asleep, so she hadn't had a chance to say goodbye, or thank him for the meal, but she had decided it was probably better that way. She couldn't afford the kind of distraction that guy would be.

Already now, she was distracted by him. She had to focus. Moving through the woods after curfew was suicide if you weren't careful. And these woods were different fro the ones near her village. These were darker, treacherous, and there was no sign of life apart from the patrols that seemed to appear more frequently.

It was almost like the patrols knew she'd be there, but of course they didn't. How could they? IT was probably just a more heavily guarded area around here, she would slip away from them any second now. She hoped.

It seemed like she would be headed for another sleepless night, but if everything went okay, she would reach her goal tomorrow. Of course she had no way of knowing that the training wouldn't be even harder than the journey. It could be much worse.

A sound behind her made her freeze. She stood completely still for several seconds, listening for any sound, before she dared look around. As she turned to look behind her, she was suddenly face to face with a patrol of 4 undeads.

They weren't as ghastly as she had imagined. They couldn't have been dead for long before the emperor brought them back to life. There were no visible signs of decay, no patches of flesh hanging loose or missing. The only thing revealing their fate was a haunted and empty look in their eyes.

Three of them had once been men, one had been a woman. The men all had what appeared to be gunshot wounds in various parts of their bodies. The woman had suffered the worst of all deaths. The death intended for a sorcerer or sorceress. Her throat had been cut, and a burning stake had been shoved through her heart. It was ancient superstition that that was the only way magicians could be killed, but the emperor took no chances.

It was odd that she would even be in one of the patrols. Usually he would burn the bodies of magicians. For less than a second, Bea feared he knew the truth, and was warning her, but thinking about it, she knew he couldn't possibly know.

During the time she had wasted being frozen to the spot, thinking, the patrol had moved closer. She could smell their rotting flesh, despite the lack of visible decay. She felt sick to her stomach, and terrified. They were just looking at her with their blank eyes, making her shudder.

“It's past curfew.” One of the men said. His voice was raspy and hollow, Bea wanted to scream. She had never been this close to an undead before. “State your name.”

“I'm no one.” She said. Thinking as fast as she could to come up with a way to escape. “Merely a villager who lost her way.”

“State your name.” The undead woman said this time. Her voice was as flat as the men's. The undead couldn't show emotion. Their lack of human compassion was what made them so dangerous.

“Beatrice Maroon.” Bea said, sighing heavily as she looked around. There was no means of escape. She was trapped even before her mission started.
