9. Fly away birdy

The new mornings sun shone through the gap in the curtains, casting a warm orange glow across my face. I had been watching the sunrise for a while in fastination. I watched red streaks flood the inky black sky, so it looked like day was bleeding through. The leaves on the trees seemed to glow in the light, their golden, purple and burgandy colours giving the garden a unique look. I watched as the birds sang songs to praise the beautiful day.

I wish i was a bird. I wish i could fly above the rest of civilisation, and see what happened from a great distance instead of close up. I would glide through the sky with ease, twisting and turning, soaring and spiralling, so high i could pass through clouds.

A blackbird flitted about on the window pain, pecking at the wood before lurching into flight. I watched as he swiftly glided through the air, and dissappeard on the horizon.

"Fly away birdy." I whispered. "Fly away."

My mother used to sing that to me when i was a child. I used to crawl into her bed in the early hours of the morning, and she would sing until i fell asleep again. She has the voice of angels. i miss her...

My thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock on the door. A fat maid poked her head into the room, and told me it was breakfast in an overly cheery voice.

A plate was placed in front of me, holding two eggs, a thin slice of meat, and a thick, curry like sauce. I prodded the meal tenitavley with my fork, unsure of what to think. The yolk of the egg was a rich orange, which ran over the white plate like lava. I cut a chunk off the meat, dipped it in the yolk, and placed it in my mouth. Not bad. I tucked in to the rest of the meal, eating so intently i didn't notice estelle walk up behind me.

"what do you think?" she asked. I nodded my head in reply, to busy gorging myself to speak. Estele gave me a small smile before going over to the queen. The three of them talked in hushed voices, occasionally glancing in my direction. I looked at them suspiciously, trying to figure out what they were saying. Velencia refused to look at me, and Estelle seemed embarrased. They all gave me a look of such pity and sorrow, you would of thought i was dying.

I suddenly didn't feel hungry. I pushed the half-empty plate in front of me, dread churning in my stomach. They nodded to each other before departing back to their places. Estelle stalked to the kitchen, her silky hair escaping from the loose braid that trailed down her back.

"Are you enjoying Sangrella, James?" The queen asked through a fake smile she had plastered on her face. I wanted to say no. I wanted to say i wanted to go home, that i hated being here.Ii wanted to scream and shout until they let me go back. But that would get me nowhere. Instead i i forced the edges of my lips up, and told her what she wanted to hear.

I am good at hiding my emotions. I don't think of details until i am alone, then i can cry, scream, laugh. That way, nobody gets to me. I will not cry about the hole in my heart where my family are supposed to be, or the confusion of this stupid 'prophecy'. Instead, i hold my chin high and smile.
