Calling at the Lake

The voices are calling and Vicky cant resist.

5. The truth.

The cave opened up into a cavern, plants grew up the walls, there was a little rock platform what someone could stand on. A faint light shone in through a hole in the roof, and the walls were made up of lots of dark jagged rocks. In the middle of the water was a massive stone. Sitting on top was the girl with blue streaks in her hair; she didn’t look impressed when she saw me.

“Found her.” Sophia chimed and the other girl crossed her arms. “Should have left her out there the whole night.” She hissed, obviously didn’t like me. “Madison be nice.” Sophia whined.

“She kicked me!!!” She pointed her long blue nail at me. “She didn’t mean it, she was scared.” Sophia pulled herself up onto the rock next to Madison. “I don’t care.” She stated frowning at me.

After a few awkward minutes of silence, Sophia decided to answer some questions. “What do you want to know Vicky?”

“How do you know my name? I never told you.” She laughed. “Do you think we picked you randomly Vicky? We know a lot about you.” I didn’t know a reply to that; all I could think was were these girls stalking me? Seeing my reaction she carried on. “Alright Vicky, I will give you the basics. We are Sirens.” She gestured to Madison. “And now so are you. To change you we had to drown you.” She licked her lips.

“We had to drown you and then in the last seconds of life we have to change you.” I interrupted her. “So why did she bite me?”

“She bit you to insert the venom. This changes your legs into a tail.” She gestured towards my tail, I nodded. “And I had to breathe life into you, the breath of a Siren allows you to breath under water and helps complete the change.” She tried to break it down for me but I was still confused.

“Why me?” I demanded. “Why not any of the other girls from the town?”

“You’re special Vicky. You are the captain of the swim team, you love the water. You were supposed to be a siren. There was just the complication of you being human, we sorted that though. Your voice is amazing, that is important to a siren. Now it will be even better. Plus we liked you. Even though your brother drowned here, you still came back.” She grinned at me.

“What do you know about my brother?” I bit my lip. “Never mind that Vicky.” Sophia tried to change the subject; Madison sat with a smirk on her face. “What did you do to him?” I asked, looking at Madison. “Your brother’s death was no accident.” Madison replied, calmly. I backed towards the entrance. “No.” I shook my head. “Vicky.” Sophia pleaded. “We are sirens it’s what we do, we can’t help it.” She hopped off the rock and swam towards me.

“No! That is no excuse for taking my brother!” Tears nipped at my eyes. “We didn’t want to Vicky, but the sirens song takes over! We can’t stop it!” She tried to explain but I looked at Madison. She showed no sign of regret or sorrow. Just sat with that smirk on her face.

I leapt through the water and out the entrance. “Vicky!” Sophia called after me. “Let her go Soph. She ain’t going far.” Madison’s taunting voice filled the cavern but I kept on swimming, wanting to get away from them.
