Gotta Be You

Callie is a normal fifteen year old, who like many dream of meeting British/Irish boyband sensation One Direction. But when her clueless father and evil step-mother force her to come on a 'bonding' holiday in the sunny island of Fiji, Callie gets caught up in a whirlwind of excitement when she learns that the 5 members of 1D are staying in her resort. As she experiences romance, friendship, betrayal and facing the past, Callie learns that sometimes it doesn't just take One Thing to have the best summer ever, but maybe five...

19. Total Eclipse Of The Heart

"So, where are we going?" I asked suspiciously, as we approached the square of the resort.

"Playa De La Franciscans, baby"
I rolled my eyes at Niall, the all-time messer.

"We're taking the bus, if that's okay"

I looked at Liam.

"Well, I don't know. I'm so used to limos, and I hear people stab each other on buses..."

For once, he laughed. Like, at something I said. I must have look surprised because he smiled.

"Liam's just trying to be friendlier in a weird, mixed-up way" Harry said, grinning like an idiot. Liam looked down at his shoes and ran his hand through his hair. Then he looked up, and stared me straight in the eye.

"I've been meaning to tell you how well you handled that photograph situation, and to apologise for assuming the worst"

"It's grand" I said, smiling. He looked away quickly, with a slightly red colour to his cheeks. Ah, bless him. He must have felt really ashamed about the whole thing.

"Anyway, who's ready to party?" Niall said, pumping his fist in the air. Harry hollered enthusiastically back at him, and Louis grinned sheepishly. Poor guy.

We walked down the drive of the resort, which was surprisingly short for such a secluded area. Soon we came to a shabby old bus sign, which was so unnoticeable we wondered if there really was any bus at all.

"People around here don't take public transport" Harry said, eyeing the yellow Porsche coming down the road towards us. Zayn whipped out his iPhone and looked up the bus times.
"One comes every hour" He said, scrolling down the page with his finger. "So the next one should come in...three minutes"

Harry and Niall started playing kicky bag with a rotten orange they found, much to my disgust. Liam was talking to Zayn, saying something that obviously wasn't music to Zayn's ears. I could tell by the way his dark eyebrows furrowed as he frowned. But I decided that I shouldn't dwell, as Louis was looking distantly out at the horizon in thought.

"You okay, Louis?"
His eyes looked at me, but you could tell his attention was somewhere else.

"Ya, sure" He didn't even attempt at lying. I smiled sadly.

"Sorry, stupid question"
"Stupid answer"
It was the first time that I had heard him laugh.

"Louis, I can't lecture you or tell you what to do because I don't honestly have enough experience in this area. But I know that when I found out Harry had cheated on me, it helped to go and blow off steam. Get closure or whatever..."

He looked at me, and for the first time I think.

"I don't know if that will help"
I shrugged.

"I know I needed to do it. Get it off my chest."
And then something weird happened. Louis, well, kind of exploded.

There was an awkward silence. Harry and Niall stopped mid kicky-bag and Zayn and Liam were staring at Louis like he was mad. And he looked mad, nose flaring and eyes wide in fury.

"Go, Louis" I said, and gave him the number of her apartment. "Just go and figure your shiz out"

Just then the bus pulled up, to watch a young man running down the road away from us, chinos and all, brown hair blowing back in the wind.

"That was unbelievably random" Niall said, as he kicked the rotten orange into the ditch.

"Should someone run after him?" Liam wore a look of concern on his face, but he needed to let Louis do it on his own.

"Come on" I patted him forward and he took a step onto the bus. After we all were paid up and seated, the boys returned to normal. It struck me how much drama their life entailed, and how they've all managed to stay so grounded. Okay, Harry needed a couple of lessons about being a good boyfriend, but aside from that, they were all extremely down to earth.

Niall, sweet, loveable Niall, was a friend I would hope to keep for a long time. I wondered how a ball of energy could be so lazy when it suited him. Then there was Louis, who I felt I hadn't really seen yet. Just the shadow of man that was immersed in his own misery. Liam, well, I didn't know much about Liam. It was weird, really. I felt like I knew Niall, Harry, even mysterious, reserved Zayn, inside out. But I hadn't taken the time to get to know Liam for some reason.

"Liam, we need to know each other"

Liam must have gotten used to my bluntness because he grinned.

"What do you want to know?"

"Oh, we should do 'Twenty Questions'. You guys know that game?"
So on the ride to Playa De La Franciscans, we quizzed each other on our must-haves and pet hates.

"Favourite food?" Liam asked.

"Yup. Yours?"

"Come on people, specifics here!"

He laughed.

"Pfft. Skittles could take on Maltesers any day of the week!"

"No way, if there wasn't chocolate in the world, where would we be?"
"Probably a lot less obese..."
"Favourite movie?"
"The Dark Knight Rises"

"What?" He said, exasperated. "Shouldn't yours be like, Love Actually or something?"
"Jaysus no, that film was crap"

"Toy Story" He mumbled.

"Say it loud and proud, Liam!"
"Toy Story!" He yelled, and more than a few people turned to stare. I smiled at him.

"You're more laid back than I thought"
He shrugged.

"I guess I'm forced to be the daddy of the group. I have to be on the look out all the time"

"No, you don't. These boys can look after themselves"
Just to completely contradict my point, Niall promptly gets told off by the Spanish bus driver.

"You stop pushing seat, or you throw off bus"

Liam was about to get up to take control of the situation but I put my hand on his arm telling him to hold off. I didn't know if I had done the right thing, because Niall looked thrown off by the fuming Spanish driver. Then, after some cursing and warning fingers, the driver burst into laughter. Niall was apparently trying to bribe him with a packet of Extras chewing gum. The driver rolled his eyes, but returned to the wheel without carrying out his threats. Niall turned back and winked at us. Liam looked impressed, surprised, and kind of confused at the same time.

"They can handle themselves" He said, sounded defeated.

"Hey, isn't that a good thing?"

He looked up down the bus at his laughing friends in thought.

"Niall is the lovable one, Harry the flirt, Zayn the reserved one, and Louis the messer, although you probably haven't seen that side of him. What am I?"
I suddenly understood Liam's need to be the responsible one, because that was what he was pinned as in the band.

"You're the Daddy Directioner, I get it. But the lads don't let what their known as define them. I mean, look at Zayn. Once you break down that hard exterior, he's more like a innocent little bunny than anything. And Louis. He's known as the lively, energetic one, right? Well, he hasn't exactly been that way these last two weeks. Thats because he's human, and he can't be what he's seen as all the time. So you, you need to let loose. Be yourself, not what you think you're supposed to be for the band's sake"
Then Liam looked at me for a little longer than I was comfortable with, so I smiled and decided to go and see Zayn.

"You and Liam okay?" He asked, as I slid into the bus seat next to him.

"Yeah, I think so" I looked over at him, noticing how flushed he looked. God, why couldn't I have kept my mouth shut? I'd broken him!

"What did you say that rattled him so much?"
"I didn't! I just told him that he didn't need to carry the weight of four other boys on his shoulders!"

Zayn shrugged and told me it was probably nothing. I nodded. I tend to shake boys up when I speak to them so bluntly, so I should have assumed Liam would be the same. We played rock, paper, scissors for the rest of the ride.

Soon we started to see trees and fields of green flashing past the window. A little brown sign stated: Welcome to Playa De La Franciscans. My hopes weren't high after seeing the sign, which seemed to suggest the town would be as desolate as the resort we were staying at. But how wrong could I have been. The bus shuttled into a large square, trying to avoid the bustling groups of people crossing roads and turning down cobbled streets and yelling things to each other across the plaza. It was heaven to six teenagers who hadn't seen a bit of life these past two weeks. We nearly killed each other trying to get off the bus, just to see if this spectacle wasn't a mirage we had all imagined.

It was amazing. It was half past six in the evening, and the town was as alive as ever. Spanish dancers wearing flamingo dresses were dancing in the square to a Spanish guitar player, who was receiving much appreciation from the crowd. Teenagers were laughing and pushing each other by the streaming fountain in the middle of the square, enjoying the warm atmosphere around them. It was obvious to anyone with the gift of sight that the clock tower was the main attraction. It stood, tall and proud, high in the sky above the rooves of all the pretty little shops. The sky was an orange-pink colour, the sun retiring slowly to another night's rest. There was a big colourful stage in the middle of the square, crowed by people trying to finish painting and set it up.

I slipped my hand into Zayn's, who was looking as enchanted as I felt at the breath-taking sight. He pulled me closer to him and I got a waft of a wood-smoke. We all just stood there, gazing at the scene. We didn't want to disturb it. None of the people here knew who One Direction were, their fame had only spread across Britain and Ireland. We were able to stroll around freely, without any bother or chaos surrounding us. Harry and Liam headed over to the soccer shout-out going on in the middle of the square. Zayn, Niall and I decided to examine the shops.

"This is the prettiest little village I've ever been to" I said, avoiding two kids who nearly crashed into us on the street.

"Yeah, its definitely something"
We walked in silence, taking in our surroundings, until I heard a chuckle from Niall.

"You okay, Niall?"
He laughed.

"Yeah. I was just remembering that boat ride. Er, what was it you said again? Rock Me?"
I rolled my eyes.

"You know I meant rock me out of the boat"

"Oh ya, I'm sure that's what you meant"

I shoved him playfully, although I was kind of blushing like hell. Zayn looked oblivious to us, but I could see a hint of a smile on his face. I can just guess what he's thinking: Never go out with Irish girls, they're mad. I've gone and ruined it all for my whole country!

"Here, Zayn! Over here!"
Liam and Harry were waving us over to them. We strolled over to where they were standing, at the stage. They were looking at a poster displayed at the side of the stage. Apparently there was a music festival going on at the moment, and a concert for upcoming talent was being held tomorrow.

"Is it too late to enter?"

A woman of about thirty with a huge smile and bright, shiny eyes came over to us.

"Are you interested in the concert? They'll be many great performances tomorrow night!"

"We were actually wondering if we could enter" Harry said, bumping the charm up to ninety.

"Oh no, only musical artists can enter" She said, her Fijian accent seeping through.

"Well, we're a band from Britain. We're actually pretty big back home"

She didn't look convinced, but continued smiling. Her smile was actually blinding. Can people's teeth by that white?

"Look, we'll prove it"

Harry ran over to the guitar player and told him the basic chords of One Thing, acoustic style. The guitar player began the chords and Harry started singing. Then Liam joined in, and soon all the boys were singing. But with all the hustle and bustle, they couldn't be heard, and no one was paying attention. The smiley woman was losing interest fast. I felt utterly helpless. It was embarrassing really, the boys making such an effort and no one taking any notice. Suddenly, inspiration struck. I ran up on stage, much to the puzzlement of the construction crew. I went up to the microphone and tapped it. A loud noise rang out across the square, greeted by boos and annoyed hollars of people. Well, it was on.

"Er, hi everyone. Hola!"

People started to gather around the stage, more for their amusement than to hear what I had to say. They wanted to see what the whacko girl would do next.

"My name is Callie. I don't know if you speak English but I'm just going to give this a go anyway. Okay, this is One Direction" I gestured to the boys. "They are lazy, messers of eejets but I love them so, I hope you do to"

The guitar started again and the boys began. As I walked down the stage I heard a few muffled words, but all in Spanish, so I couldn't be offended, thank God. Soon the crowd got into the song, and the teenagers even started dancing with each other. Some people got out their phones and started recording it. I decided to follow suit, and out came my Nikon. It snapshots from all different angles, which turned out pretty good for casual snaps. After the song finished, the crowd cheered for more. The boys looked at each other, deciding whether to do another, but Smiles intervened.

"No, no! You'll see Five Directions tomorrow night at the Playa De La Franciscans Annual Basilisk Fang Festival Closing Concert!"

"One Direction" Liam corrected her.

"One Direction!" She yelled.

"One Direction!" We all chorused, just like millions of their fans would one day.
