Gotta Be You

Callie is a normal fifteen year old, who like many dream of meeting British/Irish boyband sensation One Direction. But when her clueless father and evil step-mother force her to come on a 'bonding' holiday in the sunny island of Fiji, Callie gets caught up in a whirlwind of excitement when she learns that the 5 members of 1D are staying in her resort. As she experiences romance, friendship, betrayal and facing the past, Callie learns that sometimes it doesn't just take One Thing to have the best summer ever, but maybe five...

3. I Wish

One Direction. How could I not have seen it? Then I squinted, and found it a little bit worrying that my vision suddenly became clearer.

“Dad, I think we need to talk about contacts when we get back to London”

Vivienne smirked. “Going blind?” I glared at her.

“Anyway…” Dad said, trying to defuse the situation. “Why do you think you need them?”

I rolled my eyes.

“Plane? One Direction? I did not know?”

“Oh, right, of course”

Obviously Dad hadn’t been listening to me the entire drive to the resort. When I said goodbye to the lads at the airport (Harry was a bit distant…), we hopped in a cab and headed to Fijian Paradise. I whipped out of my camera (another bribe from Dad, a pink Nikon) and started snapping everything that interested me. As the taxi whizzed by I could make out the Fijian sea in the distance, as big, green palm trees scarred my view. Something I noticed is that we were heading towards the direction of the sea, so when Dad said the resort was right on the beach I wasn’t surprised.

“So, One Direction is staying in our resort” I said in a disbelieving tone.

“But don’t be annoying them Callie! I was talking to their manager and she said the boys need space for tranquil, peaceful, relaxation time. And she seems like a smart woman!”

I thought she might say that.

“So Dad, what are we doing once we get to the resort?”

Dad shrugged and yawned, sending an obvious signal that he was heading straight to the hotel room for a nap.

“Well, I’m going straight to the spa” Vivienne said with a sigh. “And you’re welcome to join me if you want, Callie” She added in a tone that meant I was anything but welcome.

“I think I’ll hit the pool for a cool down dip” I said, fanning myself with my passport.

“Give me that, you’ll probably lose it!” Vivienne grabbed it from my clutches.

“I’m not a baby” I said sulkily. Vivienne rolled her eyes. Uh, what an evil witch.

Just then my phone gave a beep and a vibration.

Luce: Hi Cal, how’s Fiji???

Me: Hot. Speaking of, guess who I met on the plane?

Luce: A flight attendant?

Me: No, One…

Something jolted my arm and I sent my unfinished message.

“Hey!” I said, realizing it had been Vivienne’s bony elbow.

“Are you mad?” She cried. She nudged my father who was shaken awake from his uncomfortable slumber. “Daniel, your clever daughter was just about to share with the world that One Direct are staying in Fiji!”

Dad turned white.

“Callie, please don’t tell me…”

“Don’t worry, I stopped it before the damage was done”

I rubbed my tender elbow. Stopped the damage…?

“Firstly, its One Direction. Secondly, what does it matter if Luce knows? And thirdly, how did Vivienne know what I was texting?”

“Firstly, that error is noted. Secondly, it matters a great deal. And thirdly…”

Dad’s voice was calm and even until the last part where he broke off and glanced at Vivienne.

“What? I just merely checked…”

“Look, Callie” Dad’s voice was his authority ‘no-messing’ one. “Did you see all that commotion at the airport? Just because there was word that One Direction were going on a holiday, packs of screaming teenage girls had camped in the airport in secret. Imagine if they found out where the plane was headed? Thankfully the flight was disguised as SH1D…”

“Secret Holiday One Direction” Vivienne added smugly.

“…and we were able to leave without a hitch. No one can know Callie, their manager was pretty grudging about letting you know, that’s why I couldn’t say anything until we landed in Fiji”

“But I found out”

He nodded.

“I suppose you can’t stop a fifteen year old girl spotting One Direction…” Dad seemed utterly baffled by the whole escapade; he probably thinks they’re just five normal boys.

“So, are we clear?”

I shrugged.

“Callie?” Dad said warningly.

“Yes, yes, we’re clear”

“Because if this gets out, then I could lose both big jobs with the resort and Erica”

I grinned.

"Your secret's safe with me!"

Vivienne raised her perfectly plucked eyebrows.

"I Wish I could believe you"

I stuck out my tongue at her when she wasn't looking. But I had more important things to think about then Vivienne. Like what I was going to do at the resort? Surely everyone wasn’t serious about me not seeing the boys, were they? Dad seemed pretty firm about it, so maybe I’ll try not to stalk them too much…

When the taxi pulled up in front of the resort, I actually gasped. It was amazing. It was the most modern hotel I have ever seen! From the indoor swimming pools enclosed by pure glass walls and the luxurious pillars in front of the resort to the grand marble steps leading all the way down to the golden sand on the beach and a sophisticated looking smoothie shack decked out in all different colours, it was a treasure to behold. My eyes feasted hungrily on the trendy restaurant in the corner, with a big purple canopy shading the neon green sofa chairs. Sophisticated looking people sat perched under the shade, laughing with their posh friends and classy boyfriends.  I had never seen anything like this in Ireland, not even in London!

A cheerful, perky looking young man came out to greet us.

“Hola! My name is Carlos Santini, you must be the Kendall family?”

He was Spanish, and instantly I liked his warm and friendly spark. He seemed so eager to make us feel welcome so I gave him a smile.

“Do you like what you see?” He said, waving his hand across the resort.

“Yes!” Me and Vivienne said enthusiastically. We laughed. Hey, maybe this resort was going to bring out the best in us…

“Well, you all must be so tired after your flight. It is half past six now, and the restaurants are open till 10, so I know you must be longing for a nice nap” Dad nodded gratefully. At least someone got his need to sleep…

“Okay, so I’ll show you to your beach house now”

We all stared at him.

“Beach house?” Dad said suspiciously. “Henry said we were staying in the resort’s hotel?”

Carlos nodded, but was still smiling.

“Yes, Mr. Gray had originally booked a suite in our hotel, but you see we are overbooked…” He acted like this was a great dishonour to his hotel. “So, we have upgraded you to beautiful beach house, right on beach”

So Carlos led all of us down the marble steps and onto the beach. I was still in awe of everything at the resort, but the Beach literally blew all of our minds. The sand was a golden yellow colour and the grains were hot to touch. The Fijian sun was beating down on the sand all day, and was almost too hot to walk across after I whipped off my converse and socks. The sea was a beautiful turquoise colour, and there were virtually no waves. Compared to Ireland, which had usually had a grey sea with thrashing waves, it was certainly a different kind of beautiful. I ran up to the shoreline and dipped my toe in. It was a cool refreshing touch, and made me want to rip of my shorts and shirt and venture into the clear, glistening waters.

Dad’s call interrupted my thoughts debating on whether I should just dive in fully clothed, so I returned to the group. We were in front of the beach house now. Carlos wasn’t exaggerating when he said it was on the beach, it was only a couple of wooden steps away. I didn’t think I’d like anything more than to stay in the resort’s luxurious hotel, but somehow this topped it. It was a more modest abode, with that strong feeling of a surfer’s shack. From the wooden panelling all around the house to the breezy, airy feel inside, I was expecting a guy with long hair and a surfboard to come in and kick us out of his house. It was magical. Seriously, I wanted to buy it off him straight away. Vivienne nodded approvingly; obviously she had thought the same as me, that this was going to be a letdown after what we had just seen. Dad looked content also, but maybe he needed to be convinced of the comfort of the bed first. Carlos brought us up the carpeted stairs and onto the first floor. It had one decent sized bedroom with a gloriously equipped bathroom. Dad’s eyes lit up at the size of the king sized bed and Vivienne’s at the enormous bathroom. Without a word this had been claimed as theirs. I looked expectantly at Carlos; there was no other room on this floor, except for a small, pokey laundry cupboard. He left Dad and Vivienne to enjoy their room and came back out into the landing. He pointed to a railing-less wooden stairs, which were going up one side of the wall. I walked slowly up the stairs and what I saw made me with gasp with excitement for another time today. It was just one big room, with a huge balcony overlooking the whole beach. There was a normal bed, much like my bed at home, in the middle of the room. It had white and blue covers and added to the nautical theme of my new bedroom. A white wooden flooring covered the floor, making me think of the base of a ship. It was so cute, and I fell in love with at once.

“This is mine?” I asked excitedly.

“All yours” Carlos called up from the landing.

I went out onto the balcony and looked out on the beach. It looked gorgeous, and I couldn’t wait to put on my bikini, grab my magazine and hit the waves! But something caught my eye as I was about to go and get my suitcase from Carlos. Someone was waving at me from down on the beach. I squinted, but couldn’t really make out who it was. Then I saw a flash of blonde hair and a mat of brown. I need not have worried about not seeing our favourite British/Irish boyband again...
