Tonight's Cloudy Sky (Niall Horan Fan Fiction)

A very wise man once said that- when it came to life- you never knew what you were going to get. It's a sort of philosophy for Amelia, who's experienced her fair share of downs and is currently waiting for the ups. And when they finally do come to her... well, what goes up must come back down.

14. The Perfect Date

I felt Niall’s hand brush against mine as we stood in the concession line. I tried to brush if off as he was standing so close, but my mind froze when he laced his fingers with mine. I turned my gaze from the menu on the wall to our hands. They seemed to fit together perfectly and I blushed, looking up at Niall.

He had a silly smirk on as he continued to look at the options and I stepped closer to him. He gave my hand a tight squeeze and turned to face me.

“Alright, love. What do you want to eat?”

I turned to the board and pondered the choices. Movie food was always the best and I was never able to limit myself. Hopefully Niall wouldn’t think I was a fat pig.

“Could I get a Dr. Pepper, a bag of peanut butter M&M’s, and some popcorn?” I glanced at him to see his reaction and he was smiling at me widely.

“Most girls don’t eat around me.” He admitted and I laughed. The idea of starving myself was ridiculous.

“I’m not giving food up for anyone.”

Niall chuckles and we make our way up to the front of the line. Niall bought our food and I promised to pay him back later- he told me not to even dream of it because he pays on every date. I smiled and walked over to the dark corridor that led to the different theatres.

We found the door that had a large neon sign outside reading ‘The Avengers’ and we walked inside. The large room was already dark and I could hear Niall sigh in relief. I had no idea what would happen if he was spotted. Hopefully they would have the decency to realize that we were on a date and not bug him. It felt funny to think that I was on a date with him. Everything was just so surreal.

Niall pointed out seats on the back row with his free hand and I walked up first, Niall following close behind. I settled down next to Niall and grabbed a big handful of popcorn, slowly eating it. Soon the trailers were over and the movie began. I could barely contain my excitement- it took all my willpower to stop myself from bouncing in my seat. Still, after five times of seeing it before, I loved this movie to death. Captain America was by far my favorite; I loved it when boys had manners and were old-fashioned. I glanced over at Niall who was taking a sip of his drink. He was blonde, well mannered, polite… I was noticing a trend.

The movie came into stride and I couldn’t stop smiling. Part of it was from the movie, part of it was from the boy sitting to my right.

I was at my favorite part when Natasha was talking to Loki in the holding cell. It amazed me how awesome she was. She pretended to be weak and easily manipulated, but in truth she was very strong and smart.

I felt a pair of eyes on me and I knew it was Niall. He had torn his eyes away from the screen and was looking at me instead. I didn’t understand why he was watching me, and I became very self-conscious. I tried to ignore it and keep my attention on the movie but I kept overanalyzing it. Was he having doubts? Was he going to walk out and leave me?

Before I could put too much thought into it, Niall slung his arm around my shoulder casually. At first I froze, not really sure what to do. I’ve never had a boy do that to me before. I did what felt natural and scooted closer to him, leaning on his shoulder. We stayed like that for the remainder of the movie. And to be honest, after that I wasn’t really paying attention to the action on the screen. All I could think about what the perfect boy who kept trying to get close to me.

The movie ended and Niall moved his arm away, stretching. I stayed frozen where I was and when he stood up I grabbed his hand to stop him. The bonus clip at the end was short, but I stayed after for it every time. Niall looked down at my hand and then sat down confusedly. I gave him a quick smile and then turned back to the screen. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Niall do the same and we patiently waited in silence as the rest left the room, oblivious to the extra scene.

It took a while but Niall waited patiently, not once asking what was going on. And as we waited, my hand never left his.

Finally, the awkward bonus scene popped up and I laughed as they ate loudly. I could hear Niall chuckle beside me and when that clip ended he leaned over to me.

“Any more scenes after this?” He whispered in my ear and I turned to him, shaking my head.

He nodded and we both grabbed our empty containers, walking out of the aisle and down the illuminated steps. After we threw away our trash at the exit, Niall held his hand out, which I gladly accepted.

“So- who’s your favorite superhero?” He asked me as we started walking the distance to the parking garage.

“Definitely Superman. Without a doubt.” I answered quickly. It was always Superman and I would never change that answer. In addition to loving Doctor Who and superheroes in general, I loved Superman with every fiber in my body.

“That was a quick answer!” He swung our hands between us and gave me a sideward’s glance.

“Niall, as you learn more about me, you will discover my intense love for Clark Kent and Superman. If I could meet anyone in the whole world, it would be him. I even had a metal Superman lunchbox in grade school.”

“Alright,” he nodded and thought of a next question. “Who’s your least favorite superhero?”

I groaned just thinking about them. “I absolutely hate Ironman and Batman!”

“Why’s that? I know a lot of people who love Batman- Liam, in fact.”

“They are not real superheroes!” I began my long speech that I had told many times. “They have no extraordinary powers! The only thing special about Ironman is his suit, and Batman has some cool gadgets. They are cool people- I don’t doubt that- but they’re not superheroes. I hate it when people refer to them as that. And then they say that they have super intelligence! That’s not a superpower! Would you call Einstein a superhero because of his high IQ?!”

Niall starting laughing and I frowned. “What?” Oh, goodness. I’ve done it again. I went all geek on him. He probably thought I was a joke.

“It’s just,” he calmed himself down; “I love how you get so heated up about superheroes! It’s awesome!”

I smiled at my feet and we continued to the garage. All the way, Niall was asking about superheroes. It looked like he honestly wanted to know more about them and that made me happy. I wondered if he was learning about them so that we could talk about them together.

We laughed and talked as we got closer to the car. We were inside the garage now, trying to spot the small black car that we had come here in. After about five minutes of searching, I spotted it at the end.

“Niall! It’s over here!” I called to him and he came sprinting over. He was turning slightly pink and I could only smile at him.

He comes up to me and holds up the keys, remotely unlocking the car. I leaned against the rear of the car and he stood beside me. “So where are we going for dinner?”

Niall smirks and opens his mouth to answer when I beat him to the punch.

“It’s Nando’s, isn’t it?” I grinned at his shocked face.

“How did you know that?” He asked and I laughed. If only he remembered that we met at a concert.

“You must remember that I’m a hardcore Directioner.” I smiled and he shook his head slightly.

“I’ve completely even forgotten that you’re a fan! You just treat me like a normal person and I forgot for a second that I was even famous.” He took a step forward. “You’re amazing, Amelia.”

My heart melted and I could feel my legs get weak. “You have no idea how long I’ve dreamt to hear you say that.”

Niall smiled widely and opened the passenger car door for me, waiting graciously as I climbed in before shutting the door behind me and walking over to his side. I was a quick drive to Nando’s, the whole time we were talking about ourselves.

It was nice for me to be able to learn new stuff about him because he told me, not because I read it on some website or twitter.

We made it to dinner in around ten minutes, and Niall had made a reservation so we had no wait at all. We were brought to a secluded back corner of the restaurant and we continued the conversation from the car, which had turned to me earlier.

“So, where are you from?” Niall asked me after we ordered our food and drinks.

“Well I was born in the states, and about eight or nine years ago I moved to Portsmouth with my family. Then about a week ago my best mates and I moved to London.” I cringed slightly, hoping that he would drop it.

“Why did you move to England?” He asked and I sighed. I couldn’t get mad at him for asking- he had no idea it was a sore subject.

“It turned out that my dad had another family in another state; when we thought he was going on business trips, he was really going to see them. In the end, he decided that he loved the other family more so he left. My mom couldn’t take it so we went to Portsmouth where her parents live.

I shifted my gaze down to my lap and Niall reached across the table to squeeze my hand. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to-”

“Niall, it’s not your fault. You had no idea.” I forced a smile and looked up at him. “It’s alright. It was a long time ago. I’m fine.”

He gave me a smile and changed the subject immediately to television. My mood shifted as I began to talk to him about Doctor Who. This boy could read me like a book- as soon as he saw me perk as I talked about the Doctor, that’s all he talked about with me until we finished eating. Apparently, he watched the show with Lou sometimes while they were on tour.

Dread filled my gut when we both finished eating our meal. I really didn’t want to leave. Sitting here in Nando’s with Niall was perfect.

He slipped some money onto the table and stood up, brushing his clothes off. Niall extended his hand for me and I got out of the booth seat. I grabbed his hand and we walked out of the restaurant, keeping up the conversation. He was asking about the girls, and I had a fun time describing their unique personalities.

“Well there’s Meredith, and she’s constantly crazy, always doing some ridiculous thing. She's the most obsessive, besides me, and she's always on tumblr and twitter. She's definitely my eating buddy as she was always hungry when I was. But if something bad happened, she would become very serious and kind of possessive over us. She’s got an adopted sister, Brittany, whom she would do anything for, and another younger sister, Livy, who annoys the crap out of her but we all know that Meredith loves her.”

“She sounds like fun.” Niall smiled and opened the car door for me. He got in the driver’s seat and stuck in the keys. “Are there more?”

I nodded. “I’ve got my four best mates Meredith, Mattie, Ariel and Janessa.”

“I want to hear about them, too.” He decided and pulled out of the parking spot. As he drove me home, I told them about the other girls. I focused on this task so that I wouldn’t realize that our time together was almost over.

“Mattie’s mainly very quiet and motherly, but when we’re having fun she lets out Party Mattie. She loves being dramatic and silly. Give Mattie sugar, and she can be as loud as Meredith and Ariel put together. She’s got an older sister who was already out of the house and married years ago. We don’t know much about her actually, just that Mattie adores her.”

Niall nodded while staying focused on the road and I continued.

“Ariel could literally be the definition of crazy.” I smiled, thinking of all the wild things she’s done in the past. “She’s always moving in some way, her outfits are always mixed matched ensembles and she’s smiling every second. She’s hilarious and probably the most fit out of all of us because she plays football constantly. She’s got two younger brothers, Allen and Ansel, who are as crazy as her.”

“And then there’s Janessa- she’s the quiet, brilliantly smart, yet funny girl who would do literally anything for anyone. She’ the biggest sweetheart you will ever meet and I love her to bits. She has an amazing mind and her drawing skills are off the charts. If we need help with anything- boys, school, generic advice- she’s the one we go to. She’s got a younger sister, Eliana, who she speaks to every day.”

“Wow, you’ve got some good friends. They’re very different.” Niall smiled as we neared the Bentley and my heart sunk. I had five minutes left with him- tops. I hated goodbyes. Hopefully this wouldn’t be our last goodbye.

“Don’t worry, you’ll like them.” I manage to say and he pulls up in front of the large building. As he turns off the engine it becomes silent between us. I open my door and get out the same time he does and he walks around the car to walk me inside.

Our footsteps echo off the marble floor as we walk across the large lobby. Niall’s hand was laced with mine as it was whenever we were walking. I felt as if I needed him to be near him at all times. I craved for us to be touching in some way, whether it is our hands linked or our arms touching while we sat next to each other. I had to be with Niall or I didn’t feel complete.

I knew this was bad. This was very bad for me. I had gotten too attached in the small amount of time we’d been together. And if he decided that he never wanted to see me again… well that was going to be hard to deal with.

We step into the lift and I press number 5; as we were brought up to my floor my hand tightened around Niall’s. He caught my eye and gave me a smile. I leaned against him and naturally a smile formed on my face. How could I be sad around him?

The door slid open and I exited first as Niall didn’t know where to go. I brought him to the right of the lift and down to the door 508. As we stood outside of my flat I could hear the girls going mad inside. But as I stood here with Niall, I couldn’t think of anything else but what he was about to say.

His face became serious, but his eyes looked slightly nervous. “Tonight was amazing, Amelia. I would really like to see you again.”

He waited worriedly for my answer, but I felt like I was unable to speak. My heart was racing and I felt like I could run a marathon.

Niall wanted to see me again. He wanted to go on another date.

I cleared my throat and nodded, a wide smile washing over both of our faces. “I would love that.”

He steps closer to me and reaches up to stroke my cheek. My breath catches as he leans forward. As the gap closes I shut my eyes, my heart fluttering in my chest.

The door swung open and we snapped apart, both blushing madly. In the doorway stood Matte and she was shocked to say the least.

“Oh gosh, I’m sorry.” Mattie stutters and turns her gaze to the floor. “I thought you were the pizza delivery man.”

With the moment ruined I turned to Niall, who was staring at the floor embarrassed. I didn’t really know what to say. How could I say that I’d just the best night of my life? It was indescribable.

So instead, I stepped forward and gave him a quick kiss on the check and followed Mattie inside. Before I closed the door I smiled and waved to him and he grinned madly back before heading down the hallway.

When I turned around, Meredith and Ariel were standing close to me. Janessa and Mattie were hanging back, watching this unfold.

“So how was it?!”

“Was it amazing?!”

“I can’t believe you just went on a date with Niall James Horan!”

“Did you meet the other boys?!”

“Did he kiss you?!”

“Did you snog during the movie?!”

“Is he just like we thought?!”

“Tell us, Amelia!”

“Yeah, tell us all about it!”

I threw up my hands, quieting the two. “Guys, you just need to calm the freak down. Okay? Take a deep breath. Niall is a human being too, and you should all respect that. He’s not a piece of meat that we can gawk at.”

“Sassy,” Meredith smirked and patted me on the head. “I taught you well.”

I sighed and walked past them. Ariel was still smiling like a madman and Mattie and Janessa both had some wild smiles going on. I could tell that they were bursting to ask what had happened. I was going to tell them, but not right now. I needed to take a shower and change into some more comfortable clothes.

“Guys, I’ll tell you everything after I take a quick shower. Okay?” I smiled reassuringly at them and turned to walk down the small hallway that led to my room.

I put my mobile down on the counter and immediately stripped off my clothes, hopping in the shower. I kept replaying the perfect date over and over in my head. I found myself singing Once Upon A December again- no idea why.

I turned off the water and wrapped a towel around my body, climbing out of the shower. I stepped down onto the bath mat and grabbed my brush from the drawer. I brushed my long wet hair and wrapped it in another towel so I wouldn’t have to deal with it while it was drying.

I dried off my hand and picked up my mobile from the countertop. I unlocked it to take a quick look at the time, but instead saw that I had several messages from Niall. I smiled as I opened the Message icon and I wondered what the three messages said.

“hey amelia. i think i luuuuuurv you ;)”

“and i wont shut up about you”

          “fancy a november wedding?”

I looked at the screen in shock. There must be a reasonable explanation. I took a deep breath when I saw those three little dots that meant that he was typing another message.

“sorry about that. harry and lou stole my mobile.”

I typed back a quick reply, smiling as I walked into my room and moved to the closet looking for another pair of pajamas to wear.

          To: Niall

          That’s alright :)

I picked out a baggy white shirt and some gray cotton shorts and slipped them on. I kept my hair up in the towel and walked into the lounge where the girls were watching the tellie. I kept checking my mobile every few seconds when he finally texted me back.

          From: Niall

          So what are you doing?

The girls looked at me suspiciously as I grinned down at my phone, typing a quick answer.

          To: Niall

Chilling with the girls waiting for pizza

His reply came quickly and my heart melted as I read it.

          From: Niall

You are quite the catch, Miss Amelia. xxx
