Tonight's Cloudy Sky (Niall Horan Fan Fiction)

A very wise man once said that- when it came to life- you never knew what you were going to get. It's a sort of philosophy for Amelia, who's experienced her fair share of downs and is currently waiting for the ups. And when they finally do come to her... well, what goes up must come back down.

26. Little Things

It was 7:34. There was the loud, incessant banging of knuckles on my door. I tried to ignore it as I have been for the past hour, but I caved.

“I’m coming!” I yelled as I walked over to my bedroom door. I pulled it open and found Meredith standing there with a smirk. “Yes?”

“Louis called,” she began and walked past me. Meredith jumped on my bed, sending my pillows flying.

I paused, not able to pick up the importance because her boyfriend called her. “And?”

“He said that Niall told him that he doesn’t need you to dress up for the date.”

I closed my eyes and covered my eyes. I did not need this right now- I was stressing out about the date and then Meredith had to come in and be all confusing.

“What the hell are you saying?”

“Niall doesn’t want you to get all fancy and Barbie-d up for tonight.” She explained. “In fact, he specifically told Louis to tell me that it was more of a sweatpants occasion.”

“And why couldn’t he just tell me this himself?” I sat down next to her and fell onto my back in exhaustion. I had just spent hours with Mattie and Janessa trying to pick out an outfit from my enormous collection and now it turns out it was for naut.

“Apparently Niall said something about it ruining the night or something.” Meredith sighed and joined me as she lay down as well. “If you ask me, it sounds an awful like a wedding. You know- how the groom’s not allowed to see or talk to the bride on the ‘big day’.”

“Hun, this is a date. We’re not getting married. It’s our last night together and we want to do something special together.”

Meredith laughed and got up. “Uh huh- something special. I got it. No need to say it again. I’ll just leave you to your business now.” She winked at me, making me blush deeply.

“Meredith! Please don’t! Stop making funny faces!” I swatted at her but she jumped back. “Where is the innocence you had when you were younger?!”

“And the way you and Niall have been acting in the mornings, I’d guess that you’ve lost your innocence as well.”

She laughed again and ran for the door as I charged after her, seething with embarrassment and a bit of anger.

“Meredith!” I cried, chasing her around the hallways corning and into the living room. “Mind your own business!”

“What is happening?” Ariel asked, turning around on the couch where she had been watching a show. She turned to me. “What did Meredith say now?”

“Why is it always me that’s done something wrong?” Meredith whined.

Ariel turned to her. “Do you really want to ask that question? It’s always you.”

Ariel shrugged. “Well- most of the time.”

“Eh, whatevs.” Meredith cocked her hips and crossed her arms. I did not like that look on her face; it was the look she had when she was about to do something mischievous. “Hey, Ariel. Guess what Amelia and Niall like to do in their spare time.”

“Oh, come on, Meredith.” Ariel turned back to the tellie, obviously done with the conversation. “I think everyone here knows what goes on behind closed doors when it concerns two people who love each other. You want to tell me nothing’s happened between you and Louis?”

It was Meredith’s turn to blush. She threw her arms out. “I’m out, bitches. I also have a date with Louis, seeing as it is also my last night with my boyfriend.” She walks towards the kitchen where her mobile was charging and grabs it, shoving it in her back pocket. I just noticed what she was wearing, and it was a lot more put together than normally. It was a light blue jean button-up under a tan sweater with a pair of dark jeans. Her leather boots sagged out from years of wear but her blond ringlets were as fresh as ever.

“You look hot!” I yelled after her and she threw her hands back in a peace sign. “Have fun!”

“You know I will!” She responded, walking out the door.

“Speaking of date nights, I better be going as well.” Ariel got up from the couch and went, as well, to get her phone from the charger. She was wearing a pair of dark, forest green jeans and a sweater with several different colors zigzagging across.

“You look nice,” I smiled at her as she emerged from the kitchen, her red leather boots in hand. “I’ll see you tonight?”

“Maybe, maybe not.” Ariel stated simply and left with a wave behind her. “Bye!”

Suddenly Janessa and Mattie were passing me, heading towards the door as well.

“Why is everyone in such a rush to leave?!” I stopped them, grabbing their arms. They spun around- both almost falling because of their freakishly tall shoes- and looked at me like a deer stuck in headlights.

“Um,” Janessa struggled to utter the right words.

“Don’t worry about it.” Mattie smiled and grabbed Janessa’s arm, dragging her away. “Don’t stress, Amelia! All is fine!”

I wasn’t able to ask them any more, because in two seconds they were gone with a slam of the door. They knew something about my date, which basically meant that everyone knew but me. They were all dressed up and perfect for their nights and here I was in the living room in a pair of sweats and the One Direction shirt I got for my birthday- hopefully Niall wouldn’t be too weirded out by this.

But what was he planning for us?

I looked at the clock- 7:40. Really, I thought. They all managed to get out in just five minutes. Must be a record.

I shuffled back down to my room, tugging at my shirt. I felt a bit silly compared to the others. But no matter- it was going to be a fun night.

I knock on the door jolted me awake. It was a short nap, as the clock revealed- Niall was right on time. I casually walked to the front door, my bare feet slapping on the wooden floors.

“Amelia? You there?”

“Coming!” I ran the rest of the way, cursing my horrible fitness. I pulled the door open to find the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. Sure, he was always amazingly attractive and perfect, but seeing him in a pair of trackies and a t-shirt just made me love him more. His hair was disheveled and his dark roots were showing, and I couldn’t help but smile.

“Hello, beautiful.” He dropped a bag to the floor before stepping forward, literally sweeping me off of my feet and spinning me around. “It was horrible not seeing you all day. The boys had to keep my occupied.”

He kissed the base of my neck and set me down, though his arms never left and he never backed away.

We stood there, standing in each other’s embrace, neither one of us wanting to end this first.

Niall crouched down, moving only one arm away, and grabbed the bag that he had set down. He handed it to me and I took it, the crinkly plastic providing the only noise to be heard in the whole building. Niall then placed one arm behind my back and the other behind my knees and before I could protest he had me cradled in his arms, bridal style.

“I love your shirt.” He winked at me, carrying me inside the flat and closing the door with his foot.

“I thought you might.” I smiled back. “Does something on it look familiar?”

“Just four or five things,”

We reached the couch and he set me down carefully. The look in his eyes was… unbelievable. He was looking down at me like I was the most fragile thing in the world, and the most precious. It was like he was looking at his whole world.

It didn’t make me feel like he was invading my personal space- quite the opposite. The need for him to be close to me grew stronger. I dropped the bag onto the coffee table quickly and pulled him down onto the couch. He laughed, slightly shocked at the sudden movement, but didn’t protest.

Niall settled down, pulling down at his shirt and kicking his shoes off. I was about to cuddle up to him when he stood. “Almost forgot.” He mumbled, grabbing the grocery bag and the remotes. He pulled out a film and put it in the play, having grown accustom to our appliances already. He sat back down, carefully placing the bag down to his right as to not make too much noise.

“What are we watching?” I whispered, resting my chin on his shoulder as he rustled through the bag.

He didn’t answer. He turned around, handing me a huge tub of ice cream and a spoon. It was cold, but felt like it had been sitting in a car for a short while- just how I liked it, oddly enough. Niall then grabbed my legs and set them on top of his, pulling me closer to him in the process. Bringing out his own ice cream, he knocked the empty bag to the ground.

The warnings were playing on the screen, so I still had no idea what we were going to watch. The sun was nowhere to be seen and the only light around was the tellie.

He leaned over, cracking open his ice cream. “Perks of Being a Wallflower. I have a buddy who got it for me.”

“Very nice,” I leaned up against him. “Very nice, indeed.”

We sat back on the couch, one of Niall’s arms around my shoulder and the other feeding ice cream into his mouth, and watched the movie in the dark. By the end of the night I had tears rolling down my cheeks and there was nothing I could do to stop them- I was way too emotionally invested in the characters.

The credits began to roll and he shifted beside me, waiting patiently for me to cool down a bit. “You alright?”

“Yup,” I sighed. “Just dandy- this damn ice cream didn’t help. Now I just feel more depressed.”

“Now why should you be depressed, malady? ‘Tis a time for celebration!” Niall stood up and bowed to me. He grabbed my empty carton and placed it on the table, then reaching for my hands.

“What are you doing?” I asked him, trying to hold back a laugh because of his silly mannerisms.

He said nothing more, just pulled me up and began slow dancing. His hand was rested on my waist and I gave in, placing my arm around his shoulder. With our other hands intertwined, we slowly waltzed around the room.

“You’ll never love yourself half as much as I love you,

And you’ll never treat yourself right darling, but I want you to.

If I let you know I’m here, for you, maybe you’ll love yourself like I love you.”

He hummed the rest of the song and I didn’t interrupt, didn’t laugh or cry or profess my undying love for this boy. I just danced and spent my last night with him, hoping that we never had to be parted.

just know that i love you all and i'm so so sorry for what i'm about to do to these poor characters. x
