Tonight's Cloudy Sky (Niall Horan Fan Fiction)

A very wise man once said that- when it came to life- you never knew what you were going to get. It's a sort of philosophy for Amelia, who's experienced her fair share of downs and is currently waiting for the ups. And when they finally do come to her... well, what goes up must come back down.

28. It's Going To Be Okay

I grabbed my wallet, which had my debit cards and provisional and an ass load of pence that I had no use for whatsoever. They all cheered at my acceptance and dragged me to the door before I could even blink.

As we were heading down the lift, I cursed.

“Shit- I forgot my mobile!”

Mattie groaned and reached forward to press the button that would stop the lift from taking us down when Ariel stopped her. “If Niall or her mum needs to get to her, they’ll just call us when they don’t get through. It’ll be fine.”

She agreed but I didn’t really care anyways. I used to be attached to my mobile and if I wasn’t with it I would feel empty. But now, if could go days without even thinking about it.

“I’m pretty excited,” Janessa smiles at us. “It’ll be nice to finally get back into the real world! The only time one of us leaves the flat is when Mattie goes to buy food!”

“Testify,” Meredith smirked as she leaned against the wall. “Preach it.”

I laughed, but stopped almost immediately. That had been the first time I laughed since he left- really laughed. For those few seconds, I was blissfully unaware of my emptiness.

“I’m glad I have you guys.” I grabbed Mattie and Ariel’s hands and looked around at my four best friends. “I’m really blessed to have you looking out for me.”

There was silence, but of course Meredith broke it. “Can someone say ‘hellz yeah’?”

She was right. Not about what she just said, but what she said earlier. This shopping trip was going to make me feel loads better.

We laughed. We sang. We even danced a little.

For once in a while, I felt… free. Like anything was possible and everything was going to be okay. Sure, I constantly had Niall in the back of my mind, but I was with my best friends and that was all that mattered in this moment.

I walked out of the restaurant, a drunken Meredith on one arm and Janessa on my other, and a wallet half empty. It was two in the afternoon and I’d spent roughly six hundred pounds on clothes and presents for the others. It was nice to be able to give back after so many years of being a poor parasite. Of course, they’d protest and say it was too much, but I always bought it for them in the end.

“I feel like,” Meredith paused, stumbling a bit. “Even though I’m legal… I shouldn’t be able to drink.”

Ariel laughed, skipping ahead with full sobriety. “Meredith, you’re such a light weight! You had one drink, and it wasn’t even that strong! Janessa can hold liquor better then you!”

“Hush, my child.” Meredith raised a finger at Ariel and smiled. “All I need is a cold shower or whatever mums say…”

“Yeah, I think it’s time to head home now.” Mattie picked up Meredith’s mobile off of the sidewalk, which fell out of her relaxed hand. She would have fallen over long ago if I wasn’t for my supporting arm. Mattie held up the mobile and pointed it at Meredith. “But first, I think Louis would love to see his darling lover in this state.”

“Oh my gosh!” Janessa laughed and rushed over to help hold Meredith up. “How much did you drink?”

“One million,” Meredith said while holding up two fingers. “Whaddyou think?”

“Louis, this is fair warning!” Mattie smiled at the camera on the front of Meredith’s mobile and I could see Louis smiling on the screen.

“Get out while you still can!” I joked, and could hear Louis chuckle.

“Get her home safe, will ya, Mattie?” He sounded genuinely concerned, and I swear I could feel my heart burst out of my chest. So darn cute!

“I promise!” Mattie turned the mobile to face Meredith. “This precious little gem is safe in my care- they don’t call me Mother Mattie for nothing!”

Meredith waved at Louis on the screen and seemed to realize that her boyfriend was watching her. She straightened up a bit, but only as much as you could if you had a couple of pints in you. “I love you, babe!”

“I love you, too, Mer. Now go sleep! I’ll call you in the morning!”

“Wait!” Meredith grabbed her mobile from Mattie and leaned against a meter to steady herself. “I still want to talk to you.”

Louis and Meredith began chatting away and I tuned it out. I turned my attention to Ariel and Mattie, who were walking a couple blocks away to grab the car from the garage and pick us up. Janessa stayed behind because she was wearing killer heals, and I stayed because I’m just too bloody lazy.

I looked over at Janessa, who looked like a freaking super model, and opened my mouth the say a sarcastic comment when someone yelled my name. I spun around in a circle, not recognizing the voice at all. Was it a pap?

On the opposite street I saw a blond girl looking straight at me, her face contorted horribly.

“AMELIA MCCARTHY?” She yelled again, pointing her finger to me.

“What the hell?!” Meredith yelled back, tripping over her own feet and she tried to walk towards her. She was still on the video chat with Louis.

“Meredith- stop. You’re going to get hit by a car. Just stay here with Janessa.” I set her down on the side of the walkway and looked both ways before jogging across the street. Mattie and Ariel were a block away and must have heard because they were just standing there, torn on whether to come back or keep going. “Can I help you with anything?”

She looked around fifteen, but the way she acted made her look so much older. She was swaying quickly, her feet never staying still. There was a bulk tucked into her waist band. I stepped back and raised my hands.

“Are- are you alright?” My voice cracked. Please, please let it be something else.

“Are you the Amelia McCarthy dating Niall Horan from One Direction?” Her voice was cold and harsh. She stepped towards me.

“Because I HATE you.” She snarled, her eyes flashing. “You’re just a SLUT who is using the boy I LOVE for your five seconds of fame! You are going to HURT him! I would NEVER do that to Niall!”

“Please,” I whispered. “Don’t do this.”

She lifted her shirt. A gun was tucked into her belt. I felt like collapsing onto the ground. Everyone around us froze. They saw the gun. The look in her eyes. She was dangerous.

“I have to!” She cocked the gun and raised it. I cried. This was it. Such a happy moment turned sour in seconds. “You need to die for what you’re going to do to him! I need to save him! From you!”

“AMELIA! NO!” I think it was Janessa. Or Mattie. It could have been anyone. I wasn’t thinking right now. I didn’t think.

Her finger moved from the barrel to the trigger. A tear ran down her cheek and her hand shook. Was it fear? Happiness?

I didn’t know. I didn’t want to know. All I knew right now- the only thing that made sense in my brain- was that I didn’t want to die like this. I needed to see him one last time.

It’s crazy what things you’ll do when you’re about to die. I turned and ran.

I felt it before I heard it.

It was a searing and blinding pain that tore through me, starting at the back of my neck. The next thing I knew I was on the ground. Something warm washed over me. I couldn’t feel any pain. I tried to scream but I couldn’t.

As my eyes slowly closed, I saw someone standing over me. There were definite screams, but they sounded so far away. I couldn’t recognize them, either.

“It’s going to be okay, Amelia.” I heard the person say. I sensed myself being shifted slightly, my head tilting forward. The voice comforted me a little, though not much because it in itself sounded scared as well. “You’re going to be okay.”

I tried to say something- anything- that would let the person know that I was alright. But I couldn’t. I would open my mouth and will the words to be spoken, but no sounds emerged.

‘I love you.’

That’s what I wanted to say. I wasn’t sure why, exactly. I didn’t really know who this person was who was hugging me as I lay on the sidewalk. It could have been a close friend or a random stranger. In my wildest dreams, it would have been Niall. But he was gone.

I would have said it because I wanted the world to know that I loved. I needed the world to know that I lived to my capacity. Because I knew these were my last thoughts.

I closed my eyes.
