Tonight's Cloudy Sky (Niall Horan Fan Fiction)

A very wise man once said that- when it came to life- you never knew what you were going to get. It's a sort of philosophy for Amelia, who's experienced her fair share of downs and is currently waiting for the ups. And when they finally do come to her... well, what goes up must come back down.

13. Geek And Proud

I watched as time slowly ticked by. It was 2:00 now, and we were all watching TV. We were watching Doctor Who, much to my delight. Luckily I had been blessed with Meredith and Mattie, who were also hardcore Whovians.

As the previous episode ended, it was time to choose the next.

“What do you want now?” I asked them all, as I was the one holding the remote.

“No more Doctor Who!” Ariel protested as she stared down at her phone.

“No- more!” Mattie cheered. We had chosen sides on which was better- Doctor Who or Harry Potter, and Ariel had chosen the wizarding world while Meredith, Mattie and I had chosen the timelord. Janessa had decided to go neutral, as she’d never seen Harry Potter or Doctor Who before. A crime- I know.

“Water on Mars!” Meredith begged for her favorite episode, but I shook my head.

“I think we should watch The Impossible Astronaut.” I grin smugly and select the episode it chose.

“Why does she get to choose?” Mattie moaned and threw herself back onto the couch.

“What are we even watching Doctor Who?” Ariel added, now putting her phone away.

Meredith crossed her arms. “Ariel, when you go on a date with Zayn, you will be superior over us. Amelia has accomplished everything she needs in life, so she gets to choose what we watch.”

“Hey!” I laugh at Meredith. “Going on this date is nothing everything I need in life!”

“But it’s darn close.” She muttered, turning her attention to the screen.

I sighed and leaned back on the couch next to Mattie, who had sprawled herself over as much space as she could. Janessa was sitting like a normal person, and Ariel was lying on the other couch, her feet on Meredith’s lap.

We watched the episode and I was at the edge of my seat. I could not understand why Moffat would do that to us; I remembered to when I had first watched this episode- I was heartbroken. But Moffat was a genius and it all worked out in the end.

I kept looking nervously at the clock, silently wishing that time would go by faster. It was now quarter to four and the clock was mocking me by going by sluggishly.

“Oh, for hamster’s sake!” Meredith exclaimed as the episode was coming to a close.

I jumped slightly and turned to her, my eyebrows scrunched together. “Is there something I could help you with?”

Meredith rubbed her hands over her eyes. “Why is it taking SO LONG?!” She dragged out the words to make her point.

Beside her, Ariel groaned as well. “I know, right?! Seriously!”

“I understand what you mean.” Janessa giggled.

Mattie lazily rolled her head to face me. “How are you alive and so calm right now, Amelia?”

“Have you seen what time it is?!” Meredith jumped up from the couch and ran over to point at the clock.

I paused. “Yeah, I know the time.”

“You’ve got twenty minutes till you go out with the boy you’ve been in love with for the past two years and look at you- you’re just sitting there!” Meredith waved her hands all over the place dramatically.

“Trust me; I’m freaking out on the inside.” I took a deep breath. “I just- don’t want to look like a total fangirl when I see him again.”

“But you are a total fangirl!” Ariel laughed loudly.

“But I don’t want to look like one!” I argued playfully and Mattie slung her arm around my shoulder, looking me dead in the eyes.

“Amelia,” she began with a serious expression on her face. “If you happen to marry Niall, can I be your maid of honor?”

I opened my mouth to speak when Meredith, Ariel and even Janessa interfered.

“No- I’m going to be the maid of honor!”

“I think you’re mistaken!”

“I want to be the maid of honor!”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” I stood up and tried to calm them down. Once they were silent, I gave them an encouraging thumbs up. “You can all be my maid of honor- when I do get married, to someone who is probably not even going to be Niall. This is just a date, guys. Cool your jets.”

Mattie let out a loud laugh and hopped up, snapping her fingers. “Boy, boy, cool it boy- get loose boy! Got a rocket, in your pocket- stay coolly cool boy!” She sang a song from West Side Story. She was such a drama geek.

Mattie then waltzed over to where Meredith was standing and dramatically asked her to dance. Meredith than curtsied and they began dancing gracefully around the room, dodging tables and couches.

I watched as Ariel began playing Disney songs from her iPod and we all began singing along to Beauty and the Beast. Time flew by, unlike the past few hours, and I almost completely forgot. Almost is the key word.

We were in the middle of slow dancing with imaginary partners and singing to Dancing On A Cloud from Cinderella when Ariel’s phone started buzzing and beeping.

“It’s time!” Janessa gasped and my heart stopped.

How can this be real? In a few minutes I’m going to walk downstairs and Niall is going to take me out on a date. This can’t be real. I had been dreaming of this moment for years. I felt like crying and laughing and just telling the world who I felt.

This may seem dramatic, but this could probably be one of the happiest moments of my life.

The way Niall made me feel when he handed me my phone in the labyrinth, how his bright blue eyes had looked into mine. I may not be with him long, but I knew that the times I had with him were going to be great.

Meredith ran at me full speed and grasped my arms. “Amelia- don’t mess this up. If this goes well, think of how amazing your life will be. Not many girls have been given this opportunity, so please have fun and remember this time in your life. And don’t mess it up!”

“Show him how awesome you are!” Ariel cheered while smiling.

Mattie took me away from Meredith and guided me to the door. “Amelia, don’t freak out. I know how you get super nervous, and I know how much this means to you, so please don’t freak out.”

I stopped in front of the door. “How can I not freak out?!” I whisper to her, panic clearly written on my face. “He’s Niall Horan!”

“How about this- just forget who he is.” Mattie smiled sweetly at me as she tried to make me feel better. “Forget that he’s Niall Horan, famous pop star singer. Just think of him as a sweet, blond haired, blue eyed Irish boy who wants to go out on a date with you. He’s probably as nervous as you are right now!” She gave me a quick hug and opened the door for me, handing me my phone- always the mother of the group.

She was right- I just had to think of Niall as a normal boy who liked me. He wasn’t famous to me. I had to think of him as a boy from Mullingar. I can do this.

I walked out the door with the girls cheering me on as if I was going out to play a game or take an exam.

I nervously walked down the hall and it seemed like, the more I walked, the longer the distance was to the lift. It felt like I had been walking for hours, but in reality it only took me about a minute. I was over thinking this too much.

But the idea of going on a date with Niall was too much to bear. I had been day dreaming of this boy for quite a long time, and to see how easy and quickly this had all come together- it was just crazy. I thought it would be impossible for him to notice me, let alone to meet him.

And now here I was- waiting for the lift to arrive that would take me downstairs where Niall would take me on a date.

There was a soft ding and the doors slid open to reveal an empty enclosure. I stepped in and it felt like I was leaving all of my insecurities and bad thoughts behind.

If Niall didn’t like me, he wouldn’t have asked me out. He would have given me back my phone and walked back off to his hotel, not giving me a single thought.

But Niall did like me. He had asked me on a date- and he texted me most of the night to prove it.

It was every girl’s dream for one of those five boys to fall in love with them, and I was one step ahead of the game.

The screen at the top of the lift beeped every time we passed a floor, counting down the time I had left.

I held my breath as the door slid open and I stepped out into the grand lobby. The ceiling was sky high and the walls were painted with gold trimmings, a chandelier was hanging down with diamonds that trickled off of it like a waterfall. It was no wonder that Niall was shock I lived here; this place was truly a house of snobs.

I walked out into the middle of the large room, searching every inch for him. But he was nowhere in sight, and my hopes were dropping fast. Had he stood me up? Was he convinced that I wasn’t good enough for him?

I plopped down rather ungracefully onto a chair available. My heart was beating faster than it’s beaten in probably my entire existence as I hopelessly glanced around the room.

I sat there for five minutes and my throat burned, signaling that I was about to break down. I pulled out my phone to check the time when I saw that I had gotten a message 10 minutes ago.

     From: Niall

sorry love but ill be a few minutes late. somebody must have heard b/c the entrance is packed and i have to find another way in. dont worry- im still coming for you ;) xx

I took a sigh of relief and put my phone in the pocket of my skirt, sinking back into the chair. Everything is going to be alright, Amelia. Just you wait and see.

“Pst- Amelia!” I heard someone whisper to my right.

I sat up and looked over there to see a back door slightly cracked open and a certain boy sticking his head out with a wide grin on his face.

“Come on!” He whispered as loud as he could as to not grab attention from the fellow tenants.

I got up quickly and ran as quietly and stealthily as I could to the back door. When I got to him, he grabbed me by the arm and pulled me out with him, wrapping me in a hug.

“I’ve wanted to do that for ages.” He said as his muscular arms squeezed me.

It felt comfortable in his arms and I leaned my head against his chest, returning the hug. Where we were right now just felt right- like this was as good as it got.

Sadly, we pulled apart and he intertwined our fingers together, leading me down the back alley. I laughed quietly to myself; we met in an alley like this, and now we were here again full circle.

He brought me to the end of the alley where there was a parked car waiting for us. I thanked him as he opened the passenger door for me and waited for me to get situated before he went to the driver’s side. He was complete gentleman- more so than what I had imagined and read about.

This surreal experience was starting to become more real as he climbed in beside me and stuck the keys into the ignition, bringing the car to life.

“I bet you’re wondering where I’m taking you.” He looks over to me before we pull out and smiles, his amazing accent making that simple statement so much better.

I take a deep breath and contain the bursting excitement inside of me. “Definitely.”

“Well, I don’t know what kind of films you like, but it just came out and I thought that you might like it but if you don’t want to see it you can just tell me-” Niall started rambling nervously and I thought it best to intervene.

“Niall, whatever film you chose will be brilliant- I’m sure of it.” I interrupt him and he blushes slightly.

“Well, I’ve chosen for us to see The Avengers. Is that okay?” He reads my face, looking concerned. But he had no idea how happy he had just made me.

“Seriously?!” I ask him, my eyes shining and my smile widening even more. “You’re taking me to see The Avengers?!”

He pauses for a second, probably not sure if I’m mad or thrilled. “Yeah, you like that film?”

“Niall! I freaking LOVE superheroes you are the best person in the world! Though, personally, I prefer the Justice League over the Avengers, but it’s still a superhero movie which is great! I’ve seen it five times already!” I was jumping in my seat as I thought about it.

“Wow. You’re pretty, modest, not a crazy fan, and you’re a geek. You’re better than I thought.” He leaned back in his seat and smiled at me like he had just won a prize.

“Geek and proud!” He probably had no idea that I had just made a superhero reference. “Ooh- fun fact! Did you know that DC stands for Detective Comics, so it’s really Detective Comics Comics?! Cool, right?!”

As I continued to get more and more excited about the movie, Niall just continued to smile at me crazily, his eyes never stopped sparkling.

I paused slightly, my smile dropping for a second. “What’s wrong?” I ask when he wouldn’t stop looking at me.

“It’s nothing; it’s just- you’re amazing.” He shook his head in disbelief. “You’re really something else. I’m glad we met.”

“I’m glad we met, too.” I reply, my smile returning to its former glory. But this time it wasn’t from a film.

It was my dream was coming true.
