59. Broken

“You promised me One Direction,” she said, not bothering to sit down no matter how many times Simon had offered. “Why aren’t they eating out the palm of my hand right now?” She pounded her fist on the mahogany wood, and suddenly Simon felt safer behind his desk. “Why are Niall and Harry breaking contract…. Proposing to their girlfriends?”

“I…” Simon began, fading out as he became hopelessly lost in his own thoughts. He thought he could trust those boys and their girlfriends, though they seemed to have no respect for the authority. His greatest creation would have to be destroyed for their disobedience. Simon quickly jumped back to reality as she began to tap her fingers on the wood impatiently. “I have no idea what you are talking about,” he lied.

“You don’t?” She replied, as she pulled out her smartphone and opened up her web browser. “Then apparently you haven’t been on the internet in the last 48 hours.” Sliding her phone across the table, Simon looked on the screen to see a celebrity site raving about the proposal. “There are picture and everything! What are you doing about this atrocity?”

“Nothing that has you involved,” Simon shot back, returning the phone to her. “You nearly destroyed Zayn’s career without reason.”

“Without reason? He rejected me. There is nothing like that in any erotic fan-fiction I’ve ever seen,” she replied as her eyes began blazing with intense hatred. “And I’ve read every one of them!” Finally sitting down, her arms were placed across her chest as she sulked in her own imagination. “That is a perfectly sane reason,” she mumbled.

“Now get out,” Simon sighed, beginning to preoccupy himself with his computer. “I shouldn’t be talking a criminal like you Relane.”

“I’m not the criminal,” Relane said as she stood. “The second I leave this building, I call my favorite celebrity blog and tell the world that Simon Cowell rigged the results in season seven to place One Direction as third, even though they were the real winners.” Simon paused, slowly turning to look at Relane who was playing with her hair, a cruel smile plastered on her face. “Slowly she looked down to Simon. “Try to convince me not to.”

“I can’t do anything,” Simon called after her, as she began to slow her pace. “They broke the contract, and so they technically aren’t in One Direction. I’m going to give them some time to get back on our side, but after that they have officially disobeyed and therefore must leave the band.”

“I thought you of all people would understand,” Relane replied, stopping to glance back at Simon. “Looks like the father-of-the-year award doesn’t go to you.” She sighed, then turned and briskly strode out of the room, a heavy sadness locked in her heart.
