1. Signatures

Introduction

“You realize,” Simon said sliding the contract across his mahogany desk, “That this competition will change your lives.” He looked to his almost-formed boy band, awaiting their signatures and authorization to his brilliant plan. There were five of them, all groomed in the world of talented singers, and they would, for sure, be bigger than the Beatles or N*Sync. It was in their charming nature.

He already knew the parts that each would play. Niall Horan would be the humorous one and Zayn Malik would be the one who was vain. Louis Tomlinson would be the leader, Harry Styles, the flirt, and Liam Payne, the smart one. It was all set in stone.

“I am sure we will be fine,” Niall said in his Irish accent and shrugged, scribbling his signature that would soon be famous. He brushed his luscious blonde hair out of the way of his sky blue eyes.

For one thing, Simon knew from experience that American girls would fall for any other accent besides their own, a scientific fact that could not be proven, yet everyone knew it was true. Niall took a bite of his sandwich and chewed slowly as he finished signing and passed the paper to the next member.

“I already have my catch phrase in mind,” Zayn said, checking his midnight black hair in a hand mirror. Without taking his hazel eyes off his reflection, he signed his name and passed the contract down to Louis. “Vas’ Happenin’,” Zayn said loudly, turning to each of the ot      hers. “What do you think?” Niall couldn’t help but laughing, while the others seemed not amused, especially Louis who stared at the contract intently.

Simon worried that Zayn would be perceived as too vain, yet somehow he knew that Zayn could dodge at bullets shot at him. He always did well, despite being very shy.

“I don’t know,” Louis Tomlinson sighed, scratching his chin. He was wary of signing contracts in case of hidden deals they might have tucked in the background. He thought it might have been because of all the stereotypes that had been worn in contracts over the course of entertainment history. But then again, perhaps it was just his active imagination and his interesting perception of the world.

“Well then, don’t mind me,” Harry Styles grabbed the contract and quickly wrote his name. He wasn’t going to pass up such a great opportunity as this. Harry imagined adoring fans, sold out shows, and, of course, the girls that came with all the fame. He smiled looking to return it to Louis, but seeing him still pondering the situation, he passed it to Liam.

“Thank you,” Liam said as he took the paper. Slowly, he signed his name, with exceptional perfection, and gave it back to Louis, who took the pen and rolled it around in his hand. Uncertainty was one of the biggest issues of the future that scared him the most, but somehow there was a wave of optimism in the group. Something that only new bands could feel.

“Louis, if you aren’t interested, you are welcome to drop out of the X Factor,” Simon stated flatly. He knew that while Louis was a fantastic singer, and had plenty of personality, four members would be fine. Yet, there was an electric shock binding these five together, and he would try to keep it that way. Friendship is important in any band and that was something that made these few so promising.

“No, no,” Louis replied quickly, “It’s not that it is just…” He faded out. It was a great opportunity to change his life- well, all of their lives- and turn his talent that he had into something worth wild, yet something ate away at him from the inside.
