6. Death...Isn't So Bad

Aleric led Jake out of Sylvanas’ royal chambers and led him on a tour around the vast Undercity. Jake was amazed to see men and women going around their daily business, selling their wares and toiling away at their professions. It was as if their state of undeath was a minor condition they could shrug off.

The Undercity itself was quite a different setting than Jake was used to. A giant sewer ran throughout the city and all sorts of pests ran rampant throughout the city. Not that it mattered to Jake or any of the Forsaken, having already lost their sense of smell, thus the Forsaken elected to spend their time on more worthwhile pursuits than something as mundane as hygiene.

The more Jake saw, the guiltier he felt for killing undead indiscriminately during his time as a Crusader. What if some of those undead he had mercilessly put down was an innocent undead man or woman, who only wanted to recover some semblance of their old life?

It was with this knowledge that Jake decided to commit himself to helping and driving the cause of the Forsaken forward, because even these men and women deserved a second chance at life. Well, some of them anyway.

----------

Jake soon began his new life as one of the Forsaken. He was drafted into the Deathguards, the Forsaken’s military unit, and started his training. He learnt fast, and within 2 years he had risen in the ranks of the Deathguards to become one of Sylvanas’ best commanders.

It was at this point in time when Sylvanas ordered the Deathguard to launch an attack on Naxxramas. Once Naxxramas was destroyed or driven away, the main Scourge presence in the Plaguelands would be significantly weaker, and it would be ripe for reclamation by the Forsaken.

Jake immediately volunteered for the mission, eager to impress Sylvanas and strike a major blow against the Scourge. Sylvanas agreed to let Jake lead the mission, and with 3 dozen of his best Deathguards, Jake set out towards Naxxramas.

----------

Once in Naxxramas, though, everything went wrong. The Scourge in Naxxramas were much stronger than the undead the Deathguard usually encountered in the Plaguelands, and Jake and his men were unprepared for the sheer might and numbers of Kel’Thuzad’s minions. Within minutes, Kel’Thuzad’s Death Knights, Abominations, and Cultists decimated Jake’s Deathguards.

Jake could scarcely believe it. All this time, he had thought that the war against the Scourge was being won, but now he realized that he had grossly underestimated the power of the Scourge. Jake ordered his men to retreat, but they were dropping like flies and none of them managed to make it to the exit.

Finally, only Jake was left. He continued fighting tooth and nail, cutting down Kel’Thuzad’s minions, but their numbers were endless.

An abomination lumbered towards Jake and tried to chop him, but Jake ducked under its bloated arm and skewered it through the neck with a polearm. Jake grunted and summoned all his strength and ripped the polearm through the abomination’s neck, slicing its head off cleanly.

Jake was starting to tire, but he fought on as Kel’Thuzad’s minions surrounded him in a circle. The minions finally wore Jake down, and knocked him down.

Two cultists came up to Jake and roughly grabbed his arms, as Kel’Thuzad appeared from behind the line of minions. The cultists pulled Jake to his feet and held him in front of Kel’Thuzad. Jake looked up into Kel’Thuzad’s frightening visage, fear took hold of all his senses.

“Foolish little Forsaken,” Kel’Thuzad began, in a deep raspy voice, “The Lich King gave you life anew, and you ungrateful imbeciles actually think you can simply storm Naxxramas unpunished?

Kel’Thuzad extended a long bony hand and pointed at Jake. Instantly, his body was wracked with unbearable pain. “You shall learn the price of going against the Lich King, boy. You shall serve again.”

Dark magic emanated from Kel’Thuzad and the intense pain continued. Jake screamed in pain, unable to bear it anymore. He prayed for death. Even death was better than the pain.

Jake felt his eyelids growing heavier and heavier with each passing moment. He fought to stay awake, but Kel’Thuzad’s magic was too strong. He passed out.
