7. Death Knight of Acherus

Jake opened his eyes. He was lying on the cold stone floor of a necropolis. He slowly stood up and examined his surroundings and himself. His armor was gone, and instead he was clothed in black robes and a hood.

Jake looked up, and came face to face with the Lich King, Lord of the Undead Scourge, himself.

The Lich King began speaking, telling Jake that he was one of his chosen knights, and as Jake listened, the Lich King’s voice grew more seductive and reassuring. Jake’s will faltered.

The Lich King ordered Jake to report to Highlord Mograine, commander of the death knights, and Jake did so without protest. His mind was blank, and all he wanted to do was do as the Lich King commanded.

When Jake arrived at the Highlord’s chamber, he noticed Baron Rivendare seated on a horse beside the Highlord. Jake flinched at the sight of the man who had killed him three years ago, but Rivendare paid him no mind, not recognizing him.

“You look confused,” Highlord Darion Mograine said to Jake. “We are the Knights of the Ebon Blade, the Lich King’s new legion of Death Knights. We have but a single purpose: To serve the Lich King without question. His eyes are upon us at all times.”

Mograine walked over to the edge of his chamber, looking over the railing at a tiny human settlement far below. Jake followed him and peered down.

“This is Necropolis is called Acherus,” Mograine explained. “Here, the Lich King’s new army of death knights are trained and readied for battle. You have been chosen as a champion of the Scourge. Do not fail the Lich King.”

“The Lich King has given us the task of taking over the Scarlet Crusade’s prized New Avalon and Havenshire!” Mograine pointed at the human buildings below Acherus. “You are to report to Prince Valanar below for further orders. Dismissed!”

Jake, unable to go against what the Highlord was telling him, kept his mouth shut and left the Highlord’s chamber.

For the next few hours, Jake followed his orders, and together with the rest of the Scourge forces, quickly conquered the small town of Havenshire in a matter of a few hours.

All this time, he constantly heard the Lich King in his head, telling him to show no mercy. Jake found the Lich King’s voice strangely alluring and comforting. He even secretly began to enjoy his newfound necromantic power and dark magic, given to him by the Lich King himself.

The Scourge pressed forward into New Avalon, and Baron Rivendare himself arrived on the battlefield to oversee the final push. As Rivendare rode into New Avalon, leading a new wave of Scourge, he called Jake to his side.

“I’ve noticed that you seem to enjoy killing these Scarlet Crusaders almost as much as I do, Death Knight,” Rivendare said to him.

Rivendare nodded slowly, and then looked at Jake again, his lifeless eyes boring into him. “You are quite effective with that blade. Perhaps, Lich King permitting, you would be interested in becoming one of my minions? Stratholme is looking for a new mayor.”

Jake felt pleased with the praise, but he caught himself as he reminded himself whom the praise was coming from. He fought to keep a look of disgust off his face.

“Now, I have an important task for you,” Rivendare instructed. “One of our Death Knights came across a courier for the Scarlet imbeciles and dispatched him.” Rivendare fished out a pile of clothes, a letter, and a glowing amulet from his armor.

“Put these clothes on and keep this amulet close. It’s magic shall transform you to look like Scarlet Courier. Deliver this letter to their leader at King’s Harbor. We shall have a special surprise for the Scarlet Crusade.” Rivendare grinned.

Jake donned the courier’s uniform and took the amulet, and instantly he was transformed into the courier. Go, now, the Lich King’s voice invaded his head once more.

Jake climbed aboard a horse and headed off towards King’s Harbor, where the remnants of the Crusade were gathering to escape New Avalon. He arrived at the Harbor after five minutes’ ride, to find it swarming with guards. The guards let out a cheer as they caught sight of what they thought to be the courier.

Jake rode to the dock, where, of all people, High General Abbendis awaited him impatiently. Jake’s heart almost skipped a beat at the sight of Abbendis, if it could still beat. Jake apprehensively walked up to her.

“Hurry up, courier! We do not have time to dally!” Abbendis snapped and snatched the letter from his outstretched hand. Apparently she did not recognize him.

As Abbendis skimmed through the letter, Jake turned around, seeing many former friends and comrades in the mass of Scarlet Crusaders. Jake continued looking around and abruptly stopped when he saw Rachel. Jake was stunned when he saw her. She looked incredibly tired and she had aged a lot in the three years since they had seen each other.

At the sight of Rachel, memories of their time together and their love suddenly came flooding back, strong enough to push the Lick King’s voice out of Jake’s head. Jake could think for himself again, and his course of action was now clear.

Jake tried to call out to her, but Rachel was looking away, towards the sea, and Jake realized with a start that Abbendis was calling him, and broke out of his reverie.

“Tell Galvar to turn his armies around,” Abbendis said, passing Jake a book. “Take this. It will explain everything. The next time we meet, it will be in Northrend.”

I have no doubt about that, General, Jake thought as he got back on his horse and left King’s Harbor. As soon as he was out of sight of the guards at the harbor, he swung his horse around towards a lighthouse on a bluff overlooking the harbor. Jake left his horse at the lighthouse and slowly began to climb down the bluff.

He reached the foot of the bluff after five minute’s climb, just as the Crusaders were preparing to leave.

Jake quickly used his newfound dark magic to silently pull a straggling crusader through the air back to him. He swiftly placed his hand over the crusader’s mouth to silence him and slit his throat. Once the Crusader had stopped struggling, Jake changed into the crusader’s armor and hurried to catch up with the last of the leaving crusaders.

Jake boarded the Sinner’s Folly without anyone noticing anything amiss, and settled down for the long ride.
