It's cold

People always said that the world is going to crash and burn, so no one expected it to freeze over and hunger to kill everyone. After all, it's mother nature at work. But when Leticia gets locked into a building with her crush, is all hell going to break loose, and will the couple die of pneumonia before that becomes an issue? Warning: Mature audiences only!

"Leticia!" Someone screached as I entered the frosty classroom, making me jump. "Gosh, get over here now."

I turned to face a thinm girl who wore a red hoodie, and a large padded coat over the top. Her legs were the size of tree trunks, wrapped firmly in several layers of thermal foam. Her blue eyes were sunken deep into her head; the result of malnutrition.

"Hey Eve." I addressed her, joining her and the rest of the class who were all crouched in the far corner. Steadily, we had decreased in numbers, leaving us with only three girls and two boys. There had originally been thirty of us. Liam and Leo the twins had both frozen to death as we had attempted to hug life into the both of them; not that it had worked. "Hey guys."

We used to huddle in seperate boys and girls groups, but now we all snuggled together, discussing our hatred to the government in hushed voices. Even after all this, I couldn't look Nico in the eyes, without feeling myself go dizzy.

"Hey Goldie Locks." He whispered, pulling me close to him. "You eating?" He asked. This had become a standard greeting since the weather had destroyed the world as we had known it. Saying are you okay is concidered offensive, because... well, no one's really ok. I mean, I've been locked in a shitty classroom that smelt like stale sweat and musty water for the last six monthes. Yeah, I've never been better... Even Nico, who was once strong and muscly never looked keen an eager like he used to.

He unzipped his large jacket, pulling me closer to him, and zipped it tight over the both of us. Eve and Daniel were in a similar position, but Niamh huddled on her own. It suited her just fine, even though she used to be such a happy soul.

I put my arms around Nico, breathing in his smell; he had gone through the trouble of using a bit of Lynx for me, seeing as showers had stopped working a couple of days ago. Figures.

"It's so cold." I breathed into his toned chest, using my eyes to study everyone's face. "Oh, by the way, I've bought a can in for us to share." They perked up at the thought, happy that today maybe the sudden cramps of hunger would be silenced for an hour or so. And then it would begin again...

"Nice one Teesh!" Eve laughed lightly, wriggling under the thick coat that Daniel held against her. Suddenly the door slammed itself open, and the teacher stormed into the room.

"We've been sent supplies!" She said, a huge smile plastering itself across her face. Everyone cheered, all but one anyway. I felt a hand go across my eyes, and everything went black.

"Don't look." Someone warned me, just as a high pitched scream filtered through the air: Eve.

"Niamh, put the knife down!" She shreiked, the tight grip around me ensuring not a single breath of air went into my throat. What was happening? I couldn't see! Nico's sturdy hand wouldn't budge.

"Put. It. Down." A mature voice said. It had to be the teacher, because she was the only adult in the room. "Niamh, think about this, you've already survived this far." I grabbed onto the arm on my eyes, and tugged with all my might.

Niamh was scowling in her place, a pocket knife clutched in between her shaking hands. Blood dripped from her wrists, flowing in deep crimson rivers to her elbow. Her eyes narrowed behind the thick glasses, and I watched in shock, wishing that I had let Nico keep his arms around me.

I burried myself into his neck, just as there was a sickening squelch. I didn't have to watch to know which part of her face she had attaked...
