Finding Kim

Everyone knows me as Kim, it's just that everyone has a different perception of who Kim is...

Kim is working towards her master in microbiology. She is intelligent, attractive and looks forward to her very prospective future. But then someone walks back into her life, just as she is getting over her tortured high school past.

She dreamt of seeking revenge but she soon comes to realise that this girl - the girl who made her teenage years a living hell - has, perhaps, already paid the price...

9. Ally's Secret

I really don't want to go, but despite this I find myself driving through a series of dilapidated streets lined with neglected terraced houses and blocks of flats. The sun has set now and all the residents have retreated behind the dreary walls of the sorry social housing provided. Except for a few hooded teenagers who are drinking and smoking something that smells suspiciously of marijuana. I push down the lock on the driver's side and a domino effect of clicking circulates me as all the other locks follow.

When I eventually locate the correct house I – reluctantly – climb out of my car and walk up to the front door. Taking a deep breath, I will myself to knock on the door. But a high pitched scream shatters my confidence. My heart thumps hard against my rib cage.

Instead of running back to my car like any normal person would, I peer through the downstairs window. The curtain has been drawn but I am in agony every time the woman screams. Ally screams. I can hear ornament after ornament being smashed. The next sound breaks my heart: a child sobbing.

The sobbing gets louder and louder and then the front door opens. A little girl – Sandy - jumps out of the house. She stares at me with her frightened eyes and shakes her light brown curls that are stuck to her tear stained face.

“Help me, please help me,” she sobs, her tiny body trembling in her night gown. “Mummy is hurt and Tommy is upstairs!”

“Ssh,” I kiss the top of her head. “Get in my car and lock the doors after you – I'll help your mummy.”

I unlock the car using my key and give Sandy my mobile phone. “Ring nine-nine-nine for the police.”

I go into the house.
