12. Run away

I haven't seen Abby since the evening she disappeared from the restaurant, along with the man who she had said was dangerous. She's missing because of me.

Someone broke into the Gallagher Academy and nearly took my friend. Because of me.

I decided to run away. It was all I knew.

I glanced around our suite in the academy for what I hoped would be the last time. Bex was snoring softly, Macey was curled up fast asleep, and Liz was snoozing with a textbook clutched to her chest.

I wouldn't let one more person get hurt because of me.

I scribbled an explanation, but at the last minute tore it into pieces. They would know why I left, and I hope they knew that I never intended for any of this to happen.

A question played on my mind every step that I took down the spiraling staricase. Should I say goodbye to Zach?

Yes. He would worry. He deserved to know the truth. It was the right thing to do.

No. He left me. He deserved to know how it felt. He would understand.

My mind was a mess. I needed to get out of here.

I headed for the door, but someone blocked the way.

I hadn't seen Zach for days. He looked so tired.

"We need to talk."
