13. Egghead: A breakup

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

But neither of these

I’ve given to you.

Remember when we

Were together besotted?

Me neither, so I brought you

An egg that has rotted.

Drop it on the ground,

And just like me,

You’re left picking up pieces

Of what was never to be.

This egg, like our love,

Is now past its best,

An uptight tension in

That shell compressed.

As this egg shows,

There’s one last thing to mention;

This Valentine’s Day,

Please don’t pop the question…

Just for the record,

I won’t be your wife,

And I’m hoping the smell

Keeps you out of my life!
