10. Home sweet home

The meal was certainly very warm and pleasant and the berries for afters really topped it! When everybody had finished eating, Brena’s Mother coughed a little as if about to make an announcement. “Now that we are all fed and watered, we must keep our promise. Brena and I must try to help you get home again. As you have probably saved our lives and many others today, it is only fair to repay you, Kiki. But first, thank you very, very much once again, you deserve it, thoroughly.”

“Thanks, I’m, err,  glad I could help!” I replied, feeling embarrassed. But Brena looked sorrowful. She looked at me fondly and said, “We must say goodbye properly, Mother! Kiki’s been such a fabulous friend to me.” Brena’s Mother was about to answer when I suddenly remembered Loobie! “Oh my goodness, where’s Loobie!? I’d completely forgotten him!” I started to panic and become frantic. Brena’s Mum smiled. “Your dog has been looked after, don’t you worry. I cared for him as well as I possibly could.” she replied. And at that moment, Loobie came bounding out from behind a chair and charged at me licking me full on in the face. Brena and her mother laughed gleefully at my loveable, most favourite dog in the world. As I watched Loobie playing, I remembered the poor Bordie Collie and hoped it was safe in a dog home now. Being cared for like a normal dog. That owner still made me feel sick.

When we had stopped laughing, Brena spoke again. “Well, goodbye, I suppose. You’ve been an amazing friend I won’t ever forget you.” Brena’s Mum pointed out that we might meet again but me and Brena smiled knowingly at each other. We knew we could never meet again... “Goodbye...”I whispered, forlornly. Brena had been the best friend ever to me today but I knew I had to get home. Mum would be worried like mad soon.

At that very moment, I felt a tingling sensation right down my body. I looked down at my feet or at least where they used to be. I was fading away! Brena and her mother hadn’t noticed. “Goodbye, Kiki, I’m sure you can find your way from the boundaries. We can take you there. Kiki? Kiki? Kiki-?” She had noticed me growing fainter. Everything was feeling tingly now...my nose disappeared, then my ears, my eyes...

I was tumbling, down, down. I hit the floor with an echoed BANG! My hand was pressed up against the tunnel wall and Scruff was scrutinising me, anxiously.  My head felt woozy but I was still upset that I’d left the adventure. As I tried to sit up, my hand ran over an engraving deep within the rock. I pulled away years of velvety moss, revealing my own name and Brena’s carved deep within the rock. I smiled and thought of another time, another place, another world.
