Sorry Mum, I'm a Lesbian

Harmony lives in a Catholic household in a Church of England society, and has never found it easy. But when she discovers she's a lesbian, she has to lead several different lives at once to cover up secrets that would make her friends and family ashamed. Her already complicated life starts getting harder to handle, so she asks herself: 'Would it hurt anyone to tell her sister?' She does, and that move gets her life spinning out of control. Can Harmony pull the right strings to untangle her knotted life?

28. Isla

Verity stared at me in disbelief. All I could do was stare back, what more was I able to do? She now knew everything; I still had a decision to make.

"I can't ... It's just - I can't believe that dad would do something like this, it is disgusting. I don't... what should I say?"

Now it was my turn to stare in disbelief, she was asking what to say? She should know shouldn't she?!

"Have you made a decision?"

"Of Course Not!" I rage.

"Harry don't yell, what plans have you got!?"

I think and slowly realize I have very few ideas about what to do - i'm practically clueless.

"I don't know, at all."

"Okay, lets say you don't go, which I think is the best option, what then?"

"Well, I can't stay here, mum will never accept me will she? If I don't go, I have to tell her right?" Slowly verity nods. "Then there is the case of school, people wouldn't really want to talk to me not without..." my throat hurts and my heads spins just thinking about... "Cassie." I swallow tears. "If I write to social services, they have to take me don't they?"

"Idiot! If you do that then they take me and Verity too, and we haven't done anything wrong!"

Both verity and I spin to the door where Isla stands drenched and soaking... I didn't notice it start to rain - or stop for that matter.

"If I Find Out You Had Anything To Do With This!" Verity threatens.

Isla glares at me, then at the floor.

"You did didn't you!? Isla you bitch!"

"Hey Verity! I didn't do anything... I just didn't stop Mrs Jackson from telling dad a few things..." She smirks at us and turns on her heels, trotting away. Verity storms after her, I hear a mass of squealing and screaming, followed by foul language and a slap. Then everything goes quiet, I can hear people whispering in the hall, then Isla walks back inn scuffing her heals, hanging her head. Then Verity follows, as Isla looks up I realize they both have watery eyes, and Isla had a red mark on her cheek.

"I'm sorry, Harmony, I didn't know you were going there. I thought dad was just going to tell you it was a phase and it would all be over soon enough."

"How come you know about what happens at Sunny-side Camp?"

"Dad told me." She answers coolly. "A while back.. I can't remember why."

So many questions spring into my head, I want to know why dad knew about Sunny-side, I wonder why Isla asked and I think I should question my father before a final decision is made.

"Really Harmony, I am so sorry I can't take back what happened and I wish I could, truly."

Slowly I smile and hug my little sister, suddenly I feel another persons set of arms around me, the arms of my older sister.

I don't want things to change.

I want this moment to last forever.

The front door opens downstairs...

Verity lets go and leaves my room...

I stand back from Isla, she smiles and follows Verity...

I stand alone...

A position I will soon become used to...
