Sorry Mum, I'm a Lesbian

Harmony lives in a Catholic household in a Church of England society, and has never found it easy. But when she discovers she's a lesbian, she has to lead several different lives at once to cover up secrets that would make her friends and family ashamed. Her already complicated life starts getting harder to handle, so she asks herself: 'Would it hurt anyone to tell her sister?' She does, and that move gets her life spinning out of control. Can Harmony pull the right strings to untangle her knotted life?

20. Dinner troubles

Later that evening, I was sat down at the dinner table with the Family other than Verity who was at a 'friends' house for the night. Isla sat opposite me next to mum as always and I sat next to verity (who wasn't here) and dad who was at the head of the table. She kept smiling at me flashing her pearly white teeth, every now and then she would tap my leg under the table. My teeth were clenched together and my arm was fighting the urge to paint her pretty eyes black. Neither of us had touched our food - neither of us were hungry.

"So then Girls how was your day? Isla?"

I felt eyes on the back of my head and glanced at dad who was starring right at me. Hesitantly , I smiled at him, he smiled back. Isla was busy yapping in the background about hairstyles and teachers and lessons etc. but for once, my father smiled at me? Me and dad have never been close, Isla has always been his favorite (as she so keenly reminds me) and the mixture of emotions gushing through my body was unbelievable, joy and yet regret - that I had never made him proud- surprise and excitement...

"Harmony? Harmony? Harmony!"

Quickly I turn round to face my mother, who is glaring at me and burning my eyes much like the sun... only not the sun?

"Yes?" I reply, knowing my cheeks have flushed a deep scarlet colour.

"How was your day?"

How was my day? My day? My day was amazing... I kissed the girl of my dreams, I made friends and I made enemies... So What!!! Mum can't know that. What to say?

"My day was normal. Urm yeah?"

Isla bust into a fit of giggles, which I returned with a glare. I turned to dad who rolled his eyes, and giggled in a childish manner which I instantly regretted - although I don't know why.

"Harmony, you forgot the BEST part of your day?"

Unconsciously I brought my leg back under the table and Kicked Isla, she stopped laughing.

"Well, aren't you going to tell mum and dad? Or do I have to?"

I froze then and I was unable to make my voice react, I need an Idea, a plan, what was the best part of my day?! What will they believe?!

"Oh well, Today Daddy, in her Drama class Harmony..."

"Got a boyfriend!" Verity said, loudly slamming the door. Her hair was dripping wet, she kicked off her boots and, proceeded to grab Isla's wrist and my shoulder on her way out. She tugged us upstairs and shoved us into her room.
