3. Zac

Darcy had received her new timetable from a rather round office lady. She had English first then double maths. Eww maths was so boring. Brooke had told her about a pervy maths teacher that suffered from a car accident and left him totally scared.

The bell rang just as Darcy and Grace walked into their English class. Rows of single desks were lined up all, of course facing the ancient looking teacher. Darcy scanned the room for two empty seats. There they were. Right at the back of the classroom next to the open windows. ‘Quickly girls, we don’t have all day,’ said the teacher who was writing his name on the green board.

In swirly writing was Mr Perkins.

Darcy sat down on the uncomfortable wooden seat and looked around. Yes, there are people I know she thought. Luke was a boy from middle school and she also dated him a few times. He was medium height with turquoise eyes and hair the same colour as honey.

Then there were the ‘popular’ girls from middle school. As usual they were sitting in a group at the front of the class applying foundation onto their already orange faces.

Then Pete Rowan, a mink. Nobody sat next to him and the reason for that, because he never showered.

And then there was a boy, a boy that Darcy had never seen before. He was directly opposite her staring around the class with his chocolate brown eyes. His jet-black hair was swept to the side covering his forehead. He looked mysterious and oddly familiar. Their eyes meet, Darcy smiled but he quickly looked down at the piece of paper Mr Perkins was handing out.

‘ Excuse me,’ Darcy said clearing her throat. ‘ Do I know you? You look familiar.’

He turned and looked at Darcy. Then after a moments silence he shook his head. ‘ Don’t think so,’ his voice was soft and gentle. ‘ I’m Zac.’

He held out his hand and Darcy shook it. ‘ Nice to meet you Zac, I’m Darcy.’

He smiled.

They talked together about their lives and where they grew up. He was originally from Canada but he had grown up in Charlesville ever since he was a baby. He had an older brother called Jack and a baby sister called Lydia.

The bell rang for the end of the period interrupting their conversation about family.

‘Looks like you’ve found a new friend,’ whispered Grace as they left the classroom.

Darcy didn’t reply. She knew herself that one day they would be more than just friends.
