How could your best friend in the whole wide world, also be the love of your life? How could they be the person that makes your heart stop beating for a second every time they look into your eyes?

"All our young lives we search for someone to love, someone who makes us complete. We choose partners and change partners. We dance to a song of heartbreak and hope, all the while wondering if somewhere and somehow there is someone searching for us." -The Wonder Years

7. Town

"Friends stand by each other through thick and thin, every time you need me I will always be there for you. You make me happy, you make me laugh and you are the best friend anyone can ever have."

"Josh! Josh! Wait!" I shouted down the corridor. After Ricky had left Josh had walked off, ignoring me. I pushed my way past people, and finally caught up to him.

"Wait up Josh" I tried to grab his arm but he kept shaking me off.

"I told you how much I hated him, I told you what he does to girls and to stay away from him. And what do you do? You fall into his trap like all the other stupid girls do." Josh was looking at me now and staring into my eyes.

"I'm sorry Josh I didn't think you'd be this mad" I bit my lip and Josh sighed. "It's just a date, nothing might not even come out of it. He could turn out to be a right asshole" I laughed.

"Well he is, you'll find that out tonight."

"You still mad?" he raked a hand through his hair and shook his head.

"Good, because we're going shopping, I need your advice on what to wear" I grabbed Josh's hand and heard him sigh and I laughed. "Come on, let's get Shaun."

"O.M.G. That's perfect!" Shaun clapped his hands in approval of my outfit whilst all three of us stood in the dressing room.

"Josh what do you think?"

"What?" Josh snapped out of his daydream and looked at me.

"My outfit?"

"Oh, yeah, looks nice." Shaun rolled his eyes.

"You look stunning, you will have him begging on his knees." I stood there staring at my outfit. It was mainly me and Shaun picking the clothes out, but we went for the subtle yet stylish trend. I had on blue skinny jeans with a short sleeved lace top, converse trainers and a leather jacket. I thought I looked okay, but not up to Ricky's standard. Josh had been moody all afternoon since he found out me and Ricky were going on a date. Whereas Shaun kept saying how jealous he was and how I had to tell him every detail of tonight. Just before I was about to head off to Benny's to meet Ricky from Shaun's house I added a few final adjustments to my hair and make up. "Good luck you look great!" Shaun gave me a hug.

I looked at Josh who was sat on Shaun's bed throwing a ball up into the air and catching it.

"Do I not get any goodbye?" Josh looked at me for a few seconds.

"Enjoy finding out how much of a dick he is" and he smiled. I rolled my eyes.

"Alright then, bye" I glared at Josh and smiled at Shaun. I hated Josh for putting me in a bad mood. This wasn't fair, this was my night and he had already ruined it. I didn't care how bad he hated Ricky, he was supposed to be my friend which meant he was supportive. I should have been thinking about Ricky's smile and his eyes whilst walking on my way to Benny's. Instead I was thinking of how mad I was at Josh.

I was just approaching the outside of Benny's where Ricky stood waving when i felt my phone vibrate and a text appeared from Josh. It was as if he read my mind.

Good luck. J x

I put my phone back in my pocket and smiled, thinking of Ricky's eyes and smile.

"Your going to eat a salad?" Ricky asked in shock whilst laughing. After I'd met Ricky at the entrance we were seated at a table for two in the far corner. Even though it was Benny's and it wasn't the most romantic place, in the corner it still had a nice setting too it. The lighting was perfect to look into Ricky's eyes

"What's wrong with that?"

"I'm paying which means you can have anything you want, and you order a salad?!" Ricky carried on laughing, and I gently slapped his arm.

"Leave me alone, I want a salad I will order a salad" I smiled and he sighed.

"Okay, whatever" he did his crooked smile and I had to pinch myself. "You look really pretty tonight Maci." I took a sip of my drink to hide my blush.

"Thanks." An hour had gone by and we both had finished our meals, and where now laughing at each others stories whilst sharing an ice cream sundae.

"So what's the deal with you and Shaun and Josh?" Ricky asked whilst wiping his mouth with his napkin.

"What do you mean?"

"I saw you with them for most of the day."

"Oh, were all just friends."

"Really? Josh seemed pretty pissed after I'd asked you out for tonight." I bit my lip, thinking if I should tell him the real reason why Josh was pissed.

"Yeah, he kinda has a little problem with you."

"What do you mean?" We paused our conversation whilst the waitress brought the check.

"He, er, kind of doesn't like you" I continued  biting my lip.

"Huh, since when?" I shrugged my shoulders.

"I don't know, he just said he didn't" Ricky nodded his head. "Did you not have an idea that maybe he didn't like you?"

"Well, a little bit, but that's just because I thought he was jealous of me because he likes you" I just shook my head. "Oh well, you ready?" He smiled at me and we got up and walked out of Benny's. To say it was only mid September the air had gone cool. Me and Ricky turned to face each other and I shivered.

"Thanks for dinner, I had a really good time tonight." I smiled at Ricky who was looking into my eyes from peering through his hair. It looked as if it had grown since this afternoon.

"Me too." We stood there for a few seconds, neither of us knowing what to do. In the end I gave up. I nodded in his direction and went to turn away.

Ricky grabbed my arm and spun me around. We were closer than before. Our chests were touching, our faces just inches apart. I felt one of his hands wrap around my waist. His other hand reached for my cheekbone, and he gently brushed his finger along my cheek and around my neck. He pulled me closer.

"I really like you Maci" he whispered. I felt his warm, breath against my lips and thought I was going to faint. My pulse was racing. Before I knew it our lips were touching. His hand that was on my neck was now around my waist with his other hand. Meanwhile I had my hands wrapped around his neck. Under my cold fingertips I felt his pulse racing too. This made me smile. I felt Ricky smile while we were kissing too. Eventually we stopped and looked into each others eyes.

"I better go." I sighed, but remembered that the last bus was going in five minutes. He nodded and released me, but gave me another kiss.

"I'll text you" Ricky smiled at me as I turned to walk away.

"You look happy, have a nice night?" The bus driver asked as I hopped onto the bus and handed him my ticket.

"The best" I grinned practically skipped to take a seat. I placed my headphones in and looked out of the window into the dark night and smiled. My life was officially perfect.

As I danced off the bus the next morning I was approached by Josh and Shaun. Shaun ran up to me and gave me a hug, whilst Josh slowly followed.

"Hey Shaun, what are you doing here? We usually meet you at school?" I laughed as I nearly toppled over from Shaun's strength.

"I wanted to hear about last night, obviously!" Shaun was stood grinning at me. I looked at Josh and smiled, he just nodded. "Well?"

"How about we walk and talk?" We all turned around to start walking to school. I told them the story, well, I was actually only telling Shaun, Josh didn't look like he was listening. He just walked with his hands in his pockets. I kept getting interrupted by Shaun though. He kept asking me questions about it. "And then he payed the bill and we went." I didn't want to include the kiss, especially when Josh was stood next to me. I knew that he was going to have to find out eventually, but I still was afraid to tell him. I didn't want him to hate me. Although I had Shaun as a friend, I still didn't want to lose Josh.

"Then what happened?" Shaun nudged me and winked. I looked at Josh who was looking more interested in the conversation now. I took in a deep breath.

"He kissed me." As soon as I said it I looked at Josh, who was looking away. Something in my stomach went funny, and i had to swallow hard.

"Oh my god he did!" Shaun exclaimed whilst jumping up and down. We had now approached the front gates and I spotted Ricky across the playground. He didn't notice me, thank god. I couldn't think of anything worse than him coming over while Josh was still around.

We went to our usual place on the playground and I turned my back to where Ricky and his mates stood. Shaun carried on talking about Ricky, raving about his hair and his eyes. Josh didn't speak a word while we stood there, but he eventually spoke.

"Speaking of lover boy" Josh nodded behind me, to where Ricky was walking towards us. I turned to face Josh and grimaced.

"Hey sweetie" Ricky put an arm around me and kissed my forehead. All the time I kept my eyes on Josh. He just slightly shook his head and looked away.

"Alright Shaun" Ricky did a little wave at Shaun, who was gazing at Ricky. Shaun giggled a little, and I laughed. "Josh" Ricky nodded at Josh who did the same. All they ever did was nod at each other.

"Do you mind if I steal Maci away from you two?" I looked at my two friends.

"Of course" Shaun purred, still staring at him. Ricky laughed a little bit.

"Josh?" He looked at Ricky, then to me. I tried to smile in apologetic but he didn't acknowledge it.

"Be my guest" he wafted his hand in the air, then sloped off the wall he was leaning against and walked away.

After me and Ricky had gone into school, Josh was no where to be seen. I knew I would see him in Biology first period, but I still needed to see him now. Ricky took me to class and kissed me. It was just like last night, hearts pounding, pulses racing. I said bye and walked into class.
