How could your best friend in the whole wide world, also be the love of your life? How could they be the person that makes your heart stop beating for a second every time they look into your eyes?

"All our young lives we search for someone to love, someone who makes us complete. We choose partners and change partners. We dance to a song of heartbreak and hope, all the while wondering if somewhere and somehow there is someone searching for us." -The Wonder Years

8. Lena and her disciples - Part two

"Friends are like peanut butter and jelly; they always stick together."

I looked to my table to see Josh sat there, tapping the table. He looked up at me as I walked in and I smiled, he just nodded. I sighed and sat in my stool. Mrs Chalk started her lesson soon as I was about to say something to Josh. I kept peering at him from the corner of my eye. All he ever did was sit looking beyond Mrs Chalk, as if he was deeply daydreaming about something. Finally she set us off to do some work from the textbook. I watched as Josh snapped out of his daydream and started writing.

"Josh?" I said quietly, he looked up at me. "Listen, I am really sorry about Ricky. I honestly didn't mean for any of last night to happen the way it did." He nodded.

"Are you mad at me?"

"I don't know" Josh shrugged his shoulders. He was so infuriating. But then he spoke again.

"You just have no idea how much I hate him. I mean, your my friend, I care about you. I've seen what he does to girls and I just don't want you to be one of them." I couldn't help but smile at the fact Josh cared about me. I gave his arm a squeeze.

"Josh, you where the only person who was there for me, and to be honest you and Shaun are my best friends now." I took in a deep breath "and if going out with Ricky means that were not friends no more, I won't" I smiled at him.

I can't believe I was willing to dump the hottest guy in our year for Josh. But when I said it, it didn't make me sad at all. It wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be to say it. Josh looked shocked that I would do that for him. He raked a hand through his hair and sighed.

"No Mace, dont do that" he shook his head.

"Why? You don't want me dating him I wont. You mean more to me than Ricky." I picked up my pen and carried on with my work.

"Does he make you happy?"

"What?" I put my pen back down and looked at Josh.

"Does Ricky make you happy?"

"I think so."

"Then stay with him."

"But Josh, you said you hate him?"

"I know what I said. But if he makes you happy, that's all I want. Your my friend, I'll just have to learn to get along with him" Josh tried to smile but it didn't work that well.

"Are you serious?" I grinned and Josh nodded.

"Oh my god! Josh your the best!"

I automatically got out of my stool and gave him a hug. I knew he was surprised because he didn't react for a while. Eventually I felt him wrap his arms around me and a warm feeling spread over me. We were split up by Mrs Chalk shouting at us saying how we were in lesson. I didn't care at all. I looked at Josh and he looked at me. We both smiled and I knew this time that Josh wasn't faking his smile.

When me, Josh and Shaun were sat having lunch Ricky came and sat with us. I could tell that Josh didn't want him there but he had to do it for me. I was really grateful for that. As Ricky took the seat next to me he gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. Shaun was nearly drooling as he was sat across from him. He hadn't been able to stop talking about him all morning.

He even kept texting me, asking questions about Ricky. I noticed Josh kept giving him dirty looks when he was talking, so I kicked him under the table and mouthed 'stop it.'

"So Josh, how the hell have you been able to keep your hands off Maci?" He grinned and put his arm around me whilst nuzzling his nose behind my ear. I couldn't help but blush.

"You get used to it" he tried to joke.

"Well I think it's impossible, she's irresistible" he turned my face towards him and started kissing me.

I didn't really know what Josh said next, I was in my own world. But I was startled by someone slamming there hand down on the table. I jumped and pulled away thinking it was Josh or Shaun. I looked at them but they were just staring at the end of the table. I looked behind to see Lena, steaming with anger glaring at me. I pursed my lips together, preparing for whatever she had to say.

"Not only do you publicly humiliate me, you start to date my ex -boyfriend?!" She shouted and I just shrugged my shoulders.

"Get lost Lena, she can date who she likes" Ricky said while sighing.

"No she can't!"

"Why not?" Shaun asked, frowning. Lena took her glare off me to Shaun.

"She thinks she can just waltz on here and do what she likes! She practically already thinks she owns this place!" Lena was taking deep breaths now, I thought it was a bit over-exaggerated.

"Since when do I think that? Just because I date your ex you assume I'm as stuck up as you?" I laughed, and all three of the guys snorted. I saw her grinding her teeth together.

Eventually she did a little scream and said "this is not over Maci!" She quickly ran off with once again, her disciples following.

"Nice one babe" Ricky smiled and squeezed my hand. I looked at Josh who was smiling at me. This made my heart flutter. It had been ages since I'd seen that full smile with his little dimple. I had to pull myself away from staring at him.

"Why does she hate me so much for dating you?"

"Because she's clearly not over Ricky" Shaun pitched in.

"Really?" I grinned. I loved that Ricky liked me and not Lena.

"So they say" Ricky raked a hand through his hair.

"Of course she is! She was madly in love with you, but you broke her heart" Shaun sighed. I shot a look at Josh who was already looking at me. He was not to say any smart-ass comments about this.

"I don't care she was a right bitch" he paused "besides, if I hadn't of, I wouldn't have been able to date this gorgeous girl" Ricky winked, and brushed my cheek. Josh made a puking sound and I laughed.

"See it wasn't that bad hanging with Ricky" I gently slapped Josh's arm, whilst we walked to my bus stop.

"I know, he's still an ass though" Josh smiled, I couldn't help resist his smile so I grinned back.

"What was wrong with him?"

"Urghh, did you not hear him?" I shook my head.

"'No she was a right bitch, if i didn't dump her I wouldn't get this gorgeous girl'" Josh mimicked, trying to imitate Ricky's voice. It didn't work very well and it came out high pitches which made me laugh.

"Aw, it was sweet" I smiled remembering it.

"More like vomit if you ask me" Josh pretended to be sick. I slapped his arm again.

"Shut up, if you liked a girl like that you would be saying the same." It went quiet for a while, and I looked at Josh who just shrugged his shoulders.

"Josh, do you like someone?"

"Nah" he shook his head.

"Sure?" He paused and nodded. I frowned but decided to question it no more seeing as we had reached my bus stop.

"Josh, it's me, you can tell me anything you know" I turned to face him.

"I know" he smiled at me. "I'll text you later" he nodded at me.

"And, I just wanna say how thankful I am that your making an effort with Ricky, it means a lot" I squeezed his arm.

"It's alright Mace." Before I knew it Josh had his hands wrapped around me, and I we were hugging. Well, technically because Josh was so much taller than me i was actually burrowed in his chest. But I didn't mind, he smelt lovely. It was his Josh smell, mixed with his aftershave. Eventually he released me and we said bye and I climbed onto my bus. I was so lucky to have Josh as a friend.
