How could your best friend in the whole wide world, also be the love of your life? How could they be the person that makes your heart stop beating for a second every time they look into your eyes?

"All our young lives we search for someone to love, someone who makes us complete. We choose partners and change partners. We dance to a song of heartbreak and hope, all the while wondering if somewhere and somehow there is someone searching for us." -The Wonder Years

4. Friends

"The rain may be falling hard outside, But your smile makes it all alright, I'm so glad that you're my friend, I know our friendship will never end" - Robert Alan

"How's your new school going then? You haven't committed suicide from lonesome or missing me yet have you?"

Leah laughed on the receiving end of the phone. Meanwhile I rolled my eyes, whilst stuffing my face with crisps.

"No, actually I have made two friends. I'm even going into town with them tomorrow." I said, proudly.

"Good for you. What they like, they really bitchy?" I laughed.

"Far from it! Josh is closest with me and we just have a laugh, whereas Shaun's just hilarious."

I chuckled to myself remembering a joke Shaun told me today at lunch. When I met up with Josh, Shaun was already there too. I was worried I was going to say something inappropriate about Shaun's sexuality, but he said that Josh does it anyway. We all laughed over the stupidest things and I began to warm towards Shaun.

"Your friends are lads?" Leah sounded shocked, and I could tell there was a hint of jealousy. I would be jealous too. Having lads as friends is so much easier than girls. I had no bitchiness, no arguing.

"Yeah, but Shaun's gay though, so I won't be getting with him."

"Is Josh hot?" I paused for a while. When I first saw Josh I couldn't help but notice his strong, good looking features, and the muscles he had in his arms. But as the week went by I began to notice other things. As I got to know him better, the more of his personality shone through.

"I guess so, but I see him more as a friend."

"So do I get a chance?" she giggled.

"You don't even know what he looks like yet!" I pretended to laugh, but I couldn't help my frustration towards Leah.

It was typical Leah. Me and Leah have been friends for years. Best friends, in fact. We were so close, we laughed all the time. We would spend nearly every day together. But as time went on I couldn't help but notice the odd thing that Leah did to bug me. One thing, was she always had to be center of attention, especially with lads. Don't get me wrong, she wasn't ugly, but she wasn't a complete beauty queen. She had long straight blonde hair that always looked the same. She wore big thick eyeliner, which made her look like she had really small eyes. The biggest feature was she was tall. Very. Some reason boys found all of that appealing and were drawn to her like a moth to a flame. Leah would always get jealous of me if one boy showed the slightest bit of attention towards me. And that's why I got the impression that she was jealous Josh was my friend.

"Can I meet him some time?" I bit my lip and hesitated.

"I don't know."

"Please! I want to meet him."

"Maybe later, it's a bit too soon." A feeling of relief swept through me as this was the perfect excuse.

"Okay, but soon. Urghh, sorry Maci, I gotta go. The jerk Ryan won't stop texting me." She sighed, of course she would mention a lad who is 'pestering' her. "Loves" and then she hung up on me. I flopped on my bed, and thought about how much I will dread the moment when Josh and Leah meet.

"Okay, would you rather.. eat a smelly, tramp's toe or live in a dustbin for the rest of your life?" Josh asked me whilst we walked down the street.

"Neither" i laughed.

"You have to pick one!"

"Fine" i paused to think. "Dustbin, i hate feet" i shuddered. We passed the cafe so we decided to go in and have a drink. Josh went go get us some drinks, whilst i was left alone sat with Shaun.

"So why did you move here?" Shaun smiled at me.

"Different reasons" i smiled back.

"Do you like it more than your old school then?" I hadn't actually thought about this question before. So i was surprised by my answer when my mouth spoke before i thought about it.

"Yeah, by a mile."

"Where you not nervous at all on your first day?"

"A lot, but i met Josh first lesson so it was fine." I smirked a little back to that first moment when i met Josh. Shaun nodded.

"Do you like him then?" he winked.

"In what way?" Shaun paused.

"More than a friend."

"No, i mean at first i thought he was hot but now i like him as my friend."

"I think he likes you" he grinned. I looked over at Josh who was looking agitated waiting in a line.

"You do?" Shaun followed my eyes to look at Josh.

"Yup, i don't know for sure but i think so" I bit my lip and wondered if Josh did. Josh eventually walked over with our drinks, huffing about the service. I caught Shaun's eye at one point, and he raised his eyebrows. I felt myself blush a little and tried to ignore him.

When we had just about finished our drinks Shaun said "oh god, look who it is." I turned around to look where Shaun and Josh were looking to find three snotty looking girls, whining over their wind-swept hair. They didn't notice us at first but when the same, intense eyes did a scan of the room and saw the new girl, they raced over to us faster than lightning.
