How could your best friend in the whole wide world, also be the love of your life? How could they be the person that makes your heart stop beating for a second every time they look into your eyes?

"All our young lives we search for someone to love, someone who makes us complete. We choose partners and change partners. We dance to a song of heartbreak and hope, all the while wondering if somewhere and somehow there is someone searching for us." -The Wonder Years

1. First day

"What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. They are but trifles, to be sure but, scattered along life's pathway, the good they do is inconceivable."

“Are you nervous?” My mum asks for the hundredth time whilst sat on my bed watching me prance around my room getting ready.

“No, mother” I say impatiently. Truthfully my stomach is churning, but I don't want my mum to know that.

“Your starting a new school Maci, it's alright to be scared.”

“Mum, I’m fine and most of all, today will be fine.” I hoped she didn't hear the doubt in my voice. There was so many worries and thoughts spinning in my head about today that I'm surprised she couldn't hear them. She gave up on trying to crack me and sighed and walked out the room.

Mum decided to take me in the car for my first day at my new school. I was grateful for the ride because I didn't have to go on the bus, but I didn't want people to see me climbing out my mum's six year old Volvo. Just before I was about to step out the car, my mother asked me one last time if I was okay. I started to think she was more nervous for me than I was for myself. I took in a deep breath and stepped into the cold, foggy weather and made my way to the school entrance.

As I walked in there was kids all different ages stood at the office desk. There was one girl who looked about eleven, terrified by the tall, emo, boy who was about seventeen standing next to her. When it was finally my turn, I found I couldn't speak. The nerves had gotten the better of me. I coughed and managed to make my speech come out high-pitched and squeaky. The receptionist told me to sit in one of the chair's across from her which I did. I started biting my nail's, tapping my foot and doing all sort's of fidgety things.

I have never had to worry about not having any friends, or not knowing my way around without being able to ask. I was always the popular girl at school. I didn't meet new people, new people always met me. And if I didn't know my way around, I was never the only person in that situation.

I was startled by a short, plumpy man stood in front of me introducing himself as Mr Redding, the deputy-head. He was bald all over which was shiny like he had just had it polished. The feature that stuck out the most and which I couldn't ignore, was the size of his ears and that he looked like a monkey. I couldn't stop staring at them while he handed me a map of the school and my timetable. There was no way that the map would help me find my way. The school was as big as a palace.

He walked me to my first class and I felt a hint of nausea in my stomach. It was bad enough I was the new girl, but that I was entering the class halfway through was double worse. My first class was Biology and it felt like I had to walk a mile just to get to it. When we arrived at my classroom, monkey man knocked and opened the door. I took a deep breath in and followed him in.

As pairs of eyes shot up and stared at me i felt myself blush. I started to hear people whispering to one another, and i wanted to disintegrate into a thousand pieces right at the front of that classroom.

"Well then, Maci, it's very nice to meet you. I'm Mrs Chalk and i will be teaching you Biology for the remaining year."

The voice startled me and i jumped a little, but it looked like no one noticed. Monkey man said goodbye and walked out the room. Mrs Chalk was stood beaming down at me when i looked at her. She was a tall and thin woman, with a really big nose which she could only just see over. I'm not that small but she seemed to tower over me like a giant. Her hair was tightly pinned back into a bun, and even though she was smiling, she had a very strict and stern face. Her eyes were so fierce that i thought she could read my thoughts, so i just give a slight smile.

"Hm.. i think we'll place you at the back there, next to Mr Jameson" her harsh, abrupt voice said politely.

This was worse. After she said that she smiled but showed her teeth, or what was left of them. I could even see a couple of her fillings at the back of her mouth, beyond her crooked teeth that was a manky yellow. I wanted to get out of her sight as quick as possible so i followed her old, wretched finger that was pointed to the empty seat at the back. I nodded to her and scurried to my seat. I let out a little sigh of relief and slumped onto my stool and flung my bag on the table. "Hi" a warm, friendly voice said from next to me.
