The girl who stalked the corridors

All Alice wanted to do was work as a psychiatrist in a mental hospital, not end up in one as a patient. But as she gets more familiar with the daily routine she comes across the girl in the corridor and her most deadly horrors come to life but her insanity may not be the case, maybe she is sane after all..

21. Nicholas's house and parents

It took three knocks on the big brass knocker before Nicholas's parents answered the door. His mother answered shooing Nicholas's father and a little Yorkshire terrier out of the way behind her so she could answer the door. "oh." She said as her stern eyes fell on Nicholas and then me. She was old, looked around 75.  She was tall and had her grey hair tied back into a tight bun. She was wearing a dress with a pink shawl over her shoulders. Her face was consisted of wrinkles and she looked very sour and stuck up. Nicholas's father was hidden behind Nicholas's mother peeping out behind her shoulder. I could describe him in exactly the same way apart from the fact he was wearing a grey jumper and green trousers and was much shorter than Nicholas's mother. He seemed very timid and under Nicholas's mother's control.

"Hello mother. Hello father." They nodded back curtly not even mumbling a hello. The little dog was yapping like crazy and trying to jump up and say hello. At least someone was friendly. "Mother, Father this is my girlfriend Alice. We work at the hospital together." Butterflies flew around my stomach when he said 'Girlfriend.' I smiled at them and awkwardly shook hands with them. " Alice this is my mother Prudence and this is my father Billy and Barney the dog." He said. I could see a little humor in his eyes as we exchanged all these pointless awkward greetings. I could see Prudence and Billy eyeing up Nicholas's wheelchair weirdly obviously wondering what was wrong.

Eventually they let us in and we all went into the glorious sitting room. It was very big and luxurious. Nicholas tried to make conversation but his parents just sat their looking at him. Prudence's posture was perfect but Billy sat with a bit of a hunch which didn't help him look any less timid than he already was. Nicholas wasn't used to all this talking and it exhausted him. He started to cough and shake. Uh oh I didn't want him to loose the battle with the girl. Especially in here with his parents. Every time something like this happened I panicked that he just wouldn't be able to fight her anymore but he usually did and I prayed he would this time as well. "Whats wrong, why are you in a wheelchair anyway?" His mother snapped. "He has TB" I answered for him. I didn't want him having any extra strain . At least his little fit went with the TB story. "oh" his mother simply said and walked out of the room. "Come here Billy!" she shouted and Billy left the room after Prudence giving a little apologetic smile on the way out. Wow caring parents I thought.

I took Nicholas up into the room we would be staying in for the night. He had calmed down and I thought he would be okay to talk so I started talking him and trying to make him feel better. "Oh Nicholas, I'm sorry but your mother is simply horrible and your father is just about as bad! Why did you want to come back here for? It's more depressing than the hospital!" He laughed at this and so did I. Nothing is more depressing than the hospital. His face turned serious again. "Well I-I I'm sorry to say this but I thought this might be my last chance, my last chance to visit here, to see them." He wouldn't look me in the eye. "Oh Nicholas no no no! You'll fight this. You'll fight her don't you ever say that!" I stared desperately into his eyes but he would still not look me directly in the eyes. "hmm" He said. He was distracted. After what felt like an eternity a loud bang and crash and then high pitched shouting broke the deafening silence.
