Riddle

The novel is based on a riddle, that takes hours to solve, and minutes to understand once you have the answer. I have taken it and turned it into a story, so I hope you will enjoy it.

This story is inspired and written for the Picture Prompt Competition.

2. Chapter One

The sun was shining as I stepped over the threshold that would lead me to Heaven. This Heaven was placed on earth and was floating in the harbor. The Princess Taruac Cruise Ship.  I had been looking forward to this trip ever since I saw the brochure ad, harmlessly lying on my desk.

“What’s this?” I asked picking it up. It had been lying on my ebony desk which was always filled with my files, papers and other crap. I saw it because the desk had been cleaned and in the middle was this blue and red advertisement.

My roommates and best friends, Mark and Daniel looked at me expectantly.

“Jack. We would like to go on this cruise ship.” Daniel said matter-of-factly. I almost started laughing when I looked at his expression. He was tall with dark hair, green eyes, and glasses that fit well with his face. But the way he was looking at me did not match his appearance. Daniel had a look of hope, like a kid asking for the extra piece of candy, and the defiance of a teenager as if I was his parent.

Mark was just looking at me with his blue eyes, blonde hair and athletic body. His arms were crossed and he was standing in the doorway to the kitchen so I couldn’t pass.

“Umm, okay Dan. Do you guys have money for this?” I answered. This was really random. I had just gotten home from my job downtown, as a bartender and I really just wanted to sleep. Still at the age of twenty six, I sleep as much as when I was a teenager.

“Yeah, we’ve been saving up. Please Jack, we really want to go.” I sat down in my chair and propped my feet up on the table.

“Why are you asking me? If you want to go, you can just go.” I started throwing a ball up against the wall and catching it again. Mark caught it the fourth time I threw it and looked at me.

“Dude, you’re coming with us dumbass! We wouldn’t leave without you, but since summer is on its way we were thinking we could all chip in and spend five fucking fabulous  days together in the Caribbean!” His enthusiasm got me thinking. Five days, the sun, hot girls, awesome food, and my best friends? Hell yeah.

“I’m in.” I grinned as relief flooded through their faces. Just like them, I couldn’t wait.

Behind me Mark and Daniel were tagging along, barely holding on to their luggage. Mine was small and easy to carry, but they had decided to bring huge suitcases. Why, was the question I asked myself. But the one thing that I did know; it was going to be the time of my life.
