Victoria's Moon

Elizabeth is the daughter of a rich Victorian gentleman - Violet is her servant. But when one of them makes a wish on Victoria's Moon, their stations in life are swapped over. With Violet being desperately searched for around London and Elizabeth in tow, they find themselves tangled up in a magical adventure. Is there anyway to reverse the magic?

4. A Wish?

As she yanked on her lacy nightie over herself, Elizabeth still couldn't help feeling depressed. The day had been a cruel reminder  of her past, and had only brought sorrow to her. She was preparing to clamber into her bed, when something caught her eye.

A full moon was outside her window, suspended in the dark velvet blue sky. Elizabeth deftly sauntered to her window, almost hypnotized by its milky softness, when a gentle knock on the door disturbed her trail of thought. "Enter," she uttered, as her mind snapped out of trance.

"Elizabeth?" came a calm, gentle voice from the doorway. "It's only me." The tall, handsome form of Charles Bennett entered the room. His black hair swept across his pale face, and a smile crept across his lips, then faltered when he saw his daughter's pained expression.

"Elizabeth?! What's wrong, dearie?"

Elizabeth tried to reply, but her mouth was a dry desert, and the word "Mother." barely escaped her chapped lips. Charles's face fell when Elizabeth mumbled this word.

"I know, Sweetheart." he sighed. "I miss her too. We all do." then he spied the moon, and with relief for change of subject, said: "Well fancy that! I do believe that is Victoria's Moon!"

"Who's What?" Elizabeth asked wearily, taking in the scene out of her window. "Oh, come on Elizabeth Dear! Surely Mo-" he paused, realising he had just entered a dangerous area. "I mean, surely you must have heard of it?" Elizabeth was confused. What on earth was her father raving on about? And how could th moon possibly bear any significance to anything? "This moon," her father explained, "has many a tale to tell. It is said that you can make a wish on it, and if the moon  agrees, it shall come true the very next day. Well, I bid you goodnight, love." she whispered softly, walking out of the room in silence, closing the door behind him.

Elizabeth rather liked this idea. She knew the wish to make. the only wish she could ever possibly want. The painful image of that hospital bed throbbed in her mind, refusing to leave until satisfied. Elizabeth closed her oceanic eyes, and muttered, summoning all the strength she could:

"Please moon, give me Mother back."
