2. A Dream?

She sat up trembling in a cold sweat. It was over. She was in her room. She breathed a deep sigh of relief. But was it just a nightmare? It felt too real.

She checked her clock. 6:00am. Saturday. She was having a riding lesson on her beloved horse Rosie today. That should clear her head a little. No one else seemed to be up yet. She could hear her older brother Alex snoring in the next room. She couldn't go back to sleep. She couldn't risk the nightmare again. The sun was rising, it's golden light seeping in through the closed curtains. It was finally morning.

Breakfast was quiet. Alex and Uncle Ryan wolfed theirs down (as usual). Aunt Amanda and Maria ate theirs carefully. Maria didn't involve herself in any conversation. The nightmare still lingered in her mind. As soon as she was finished she made an excuse to leave saying she wanted to get changed for her riding lesson. She quickly ran up to her room to get changed. She was just looking in the mirror to pin her long, wavy, auburn hair back in a pony tail when she noticed a strange reflection in the mirror. She tried to scream but no sound came out. The demon from her dream was behind her! She wheeled round and gasped. There was nothing there. She looked in the mirror again but it was gone. She was alone in her room. This was getting creepy.

Her uncle agreed to drive her to the livery yard where Rosie was kept. Rosie put her black head over her stall door and nickered with pricked ears when she saw Maria coming. Rosie was a 4 year-old black purebred Spanish horse with four white socks (one on each leg) and a white stripe from her forelock to her nose. Maria's aunt and uncle had bought Rosie as a foal for Maria and they had bonded almost instantly.

"Hey Rosie," Maria smiled, "You want your breakfast, don't you?" Rosie started snuffling her pockets. Maria pushed her nose away laughing and went to prepare a haynet. While Rosie was munching happily and distracted, Maria began tacking her up.

"I just hope today goes well and nothing wrong happens. Although I know it will be fine. I haven't had an accident in years." she said more to herself than Rosie.

A small moment of reassurance against what was to come.
