Portal to another world

When Ruby dies she gets access to another world. One thing is different there, every creature is a blood-sucking vampire. No human can enter this unique world as venom in a vampires body lets them through. The Portal is the only way in and out.
Before she was turned, Ruby was a big fan of Twilight and she had always wondered what it would be like to be a real vampire. She soon discovers that the vampire life she wanted so much is actually living hell. Her only help through this life is a mad vampire scientist, a mysterious other and Jaden. Will she make it in this life? Read on to find out.

14. School

Ruby had never been a big fan of school and today she felt worse about it than she ever had before. She kept thinking of the man that Jaden had killed and whose blood she drank. Could that really have only been a couple of hours ago? Did he have a family that would miss him?

She was also worried about her own self control. What if she got weak and killed another student? Everyone would see what she is. And the Vampire Council would 'dispose' of her.

On the bus, after Ruby's friends had given up on her, she stared at the fur coat on the middle-aged lady in the seat in front. Her face showed no emotion, but inside her mind was buzzing doubt.

I can't do this. I won't be able to control myself around all these people. I'm going to end up killing someone. Oh God. Oh my God we're here...

Ruby got off the bus and marched into school purposefully. She had used the short, brisk walk to prepare herself for the day to come. Maths was first. A very normal subject, a normal, human subject. It was easy to pretend to be human because she still hated maths, even as a vampire. Ruby didn't even try to concentrate, she stared at the clock and watched the minutes tick by. The bell went and before Ruby tried to rush off, she had to remind herself that if she ran off her cover would be blown instantly; she'd be sent to a science lab to be experimented on like an animal. And even worse she would have the Vampire Council to deal with.

As she was sitting down at her usual bench, with her usual friends, Ruby realised she didn't feel cold even though her friends were all red-nosed and shivery. She didn't feel the cold anymore. She still felt toasty warm.

"Feel my hand." Ruby's friend Ellie said, reaching towards her. As their hands touched Ruby realised she must have been cold too because Ellie's hand didn't feel any different than her own. She was cold even though she didn't feel it.

"Hey aren't you going to eat anything."

"Uh, I'm not hungry." Luckily she really wasn't. Her friend laughed

"Yeah right!. You're always hungry. Come on, you're not trying another diet are you? This is pointless and you know it. Here, have some chocolate." Ruby's friend held out a piece of Oreo chocolate. Three days ago Ruby would've snatched the chocolate right from her friend's hand, but now the idea of it made her feel queasy. Chocolate was no longer on her favourite foods list; there was only one - and that was blood. She knew that human food wouldn't harm her so you took it and ate it to seem normal. She couldn't taste a thing.

She was still worried that she'd want to feed soon and couldn't get the thought out of her mind. She had always been easily tempted in her human life, that was just going to have to change now.

"Hey, Ruby, you okay? You're looking a little pale."

"Uh, yeah, I'm good. Just a little tired." She lied - Ruby wasn't okay her head was spinning because she was so worried and she didn't feel at all tired even though she hadn't slept in over 24 hours.

The bell rang to signal the end of break. Ruby got up and almost ran to her next lesson. She wanted to use her vampire speed, but that wouldn't have been very good fitting in. Ruby sat down at her desk and her new science teacher Mr Briggs started to read out the register.

"Today class, we will be dissecting an animal heart." Oh no, oh no, oh no... "You will each have your own and this work is in preparation for your exams. Your task is to find out which animal it has come from, so you will have to get in nice and deep. They are all different so there is no point copying from anyone."
