13. Relief in the Mance house

Kate heard a knock and ran to the front door. She flung it open and threw herself at her daughter. Kate and Ruby both laid on the floor for a minute before Ruby broke out of the embrace and got up. Ruby offered a hand to her mother to help her up but Kate shook her head and pushed herself up. She looked angry.

"Ruby. How could you do that to me? You didn't come back. Where were you? Wait, don't tell me I don't want to know. You are grounded for two months young lady. That means extra school work, more chores, no going out and lots more time in your room. There will be no arguing."

"Mum, I was only at a friends house. I was fine."

"That's not good enough. I thought you had been abducted. Was it a boy's house?"

"No, not a boy, mum. It was a ... newer friend that I made at school."

"Who? You haven't mentioned a new friend."

"Mum it doesn't matter who it was."

"Yes, it does because I'm forbidding you to go there ever again. This girl is a bad influence." Ruby rolled her eyes and Kate sighed. "I'm glad you're safe, Hun. I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't come back."

"I bet you'd have called in the FBI. You always over-react." Ruby laughed.

"Hey, don't be cheeky. I don't over-react, I just care about you." Ruby was about to send back a sarcastic remark but a little voice interrupted.

"Hey. You didn't come back last night. I missed you." Aggie's hair was messy and she was still in her pyjamas and wearing her bunny slippers; this made Ruby laugh.

"Sorry, Aggie."

"Go get ready for school Ruby." Said her mum. Back to usual life.

Ruby walked down her road to the bus stop by herself; usually she would have walked with her friends but she wanted more alone time before she was thrown into a jungle of teenage drama. Her friends asked her if she was alright so she lied and told them she was. Her friends knew her well enough to know that she was lying so they tried again. Ruby knew they wouldn't give up so she said she had been arguing with her mum which wasn't really a lie.
