8. Chapter Seven

Carrying the tray of unrecognisable food, I scanned the lunch hall, searching for a glimpse of messy blonde hair. I suddenly spot one of the cream round tables surrounded by a crowd of boys. Somehow, I just know that in the middle of those drop dead gorgeous boys, is Gwen.

I walk casually over to the table, coughing into my fist when they start to shuffle off.

“Molly! I was just hitting it off with that boy...” Gwen whines.

“Can I sit with you?” I say, a little harshly.

“I guess so... but next time, please don’t interrupt.” I laugh a little as she replies.

I push the tray to my space and join Gwen. Taming what looks like spaghetti onto my fork, I listen to Gwen natter on about her talk with one of the boys. Only one of her sentences stops me from focusing.

“Don’t you think Carl is totally hot! I mean, look at him!”

I pick my eyes up from my lunch and glance across the hall. Carl is standing round a table, chatting with his mates, looking right at me. Immediately, I go back to twirling my spaghetti round and round my fork.

“Umm... he’s alright.” I eventually say.

“Alright!? Are you crazy!”

“Yes. I always have been.” I reply.

“Do you think I should talk to him?” Gwen says, looking at me.

“Yeah sure... I mean, if you like him, then yeah.”

Gwen quickly rises, her eyes set on the prize. She flashes me a wide grin before prowling off. I watch her tap Carl on the shoulder, smiling.  Whatever Gwen says, the answer from Carl is a brief nod.

The conversation between Gwen’s shiny lips and Carl’s nodding head is quickly interrupted by the bell. Gwen glares at Carl’s back as he walks away, his books gathered in his arms. I push away my lunch tray and grab my rucksack. Smoke is almost spouting from Gwen’s head when I reach her.

“I mean, come onnnnn! Paying more attention to your mates than your future girlfriend just isn’t acceptable!” Gwen moans as we walk down the corridor.

I’m not actually listening, just hoping that I could die on the spot. Listening to the most flirty girl in the whole college have a tantrum is not entertaining. It would be, if I was the gossip girl type.

The rest of the day is spent copying diagrams of angels and devils into our science books and identifying the usual actions of devils. Every lesson I enter, Gwen has grabbed a seat right next to Carl. Surprise, surprise.
