Things get difficult for Taylor Janssen when her home is bombed by those who control it. She is forced to become a strange mix of superhero and assassin. Her best friend is Alex, but she makes friends with a fellow hero, Alice, and the techie, Matt. But not all is as it seems...

7. The Allies

The next morning we were called from the apartment. We were going to meet our fellow heroes. We were blindfolded again once we got into the car. I didn't see any need for it and opened my mouth to protest. I received a swift punch to the stomach. I kept my mouth shut after that.

We were brought to a very fancy house. They split Alex and I up as soon as we walked in the door. I was brought away by a woman who claimed to be my assistant. "We can't have your bosses seeing you like that!" She said.

After a few hours with nothing to eat, I was ready to meet the people who had made me like this. My assistant had me in a black skirt, a white t-shirt, black wedge heels and a black eye mask. I thought the mask was stupid until she explained to me that there were other guests here besides the heroes, and the bosses wanted to be able to tell the heroes apart. So everyone was required to wear a mask.

I wasn't sure what to expect. Maybe a conference room. But I instead found a table set for ten. Two seats were taken. One by Alex, wearing a white mask, a white shirt and black trousers and looking uncomfortable. The other was taken by a man who was smiling broadly. He was roughly in his thirties. I was trying not to fall over in my heels as I made my way over to the chair beside Alex. "Miss Janssen. Please, what can I get you to drink? We have a little of everything." The guy's smile was broad, but his eyes were glaring at me. "Um, just water, please." I said. I took a sip of the water. Alex nudged me. He passed me a note. As the door opened the guy looked away from me, so I got a chance to read it. "Can you taste that?" I looked at Alex and shook my head ever so slightly. He shrugged.

"Miss Janssen, Mr Johansson, I would like you to meet one of your allies." There was a girl standing there. She didn't have any visible scars. I did, and I had increased healing. She moved with an impossible grace. Her hair was a pale blond. It was too long, really. She was dressed the same as me. "This is Alice Lowe. Miss Lowe, this is Alex Johansson and Taylor Janssen. Miss Lowe has the powers of agility and empathy. Mr Johansson has the power of force fields and can reduce the pain people feel. Miss Janssen has increased healing times and camouflage."

A few minutes later a guy came into the room. He was good looking in his own way. He had short black hair. He was tall, taller than me or Alice. The guy at the head of the table introduced him as Josh Strong. He had increased speed and strength.

The next people the man introduced were the people responsible for finding us on the course. Then the medics came in. They had a particular interest in me. And then the tech guys came in. One was really badly scarred and had a slight limp. The other had a stutter. But I loved them both. I was sitting beside the scarred one. He was really funny and didn't seem to like the head.

The meal was nice. But Alex didn't eat much of it and I began feeling light headed after the starter. I had a nasty headache by the main course. Drinking water didn't help.

After dessert everyone was talking, except for me. I had my head on the table. The techie was the first to notice something was wrong. And the medics finally got it when I fell off my chair.

"What's wrong with her?" I heard Alex shout. The tech guy was taking my pulse. The medics pushed him out of the way.

I woke up in the apartment later that evening. I felt like hell warmed up on a plate and let go cold again. I was still fully dressed. I swung my feet out of bed and made my way into the sitting room. The scarred techie I had been sitting beside, Alice and Alex were there. Alice was very pale. Alex rugby tackled me with a hug. The techie smiled and Alice grinned. "You have got to stop doing this to me, Tay." Alex whispered in my ear. I grinned. "Where's the medic?" I assumed they would have to be monitoring me. "Nah, they cleared off as soon as they figured out you were unconscious and not dead yet." Alice said. I remembered she had empathy. "Do they know what caused it?" I asked. Again, it was Alice who spoke. "The medics officially said it was an allergic reaction, but I read their minds. Yeah, I can do that. It's an extension to my empathy." She read my surprise. "Anyway, it turns out they drugged our food. We didn't noticed and it didn't have any major reaction on us. It just stopped our powers from coming into effect. But when it tried to stop yours, your healing powers kicked in and rejected the drug. If you would have just eaten the starter, you would have just probably had a nasty headache for a while. But you kept ingesting the drug, and so eventually your body had to shut down to clean itself of the drug." I looked at her. "You got all that from the medics' minds?" She grinned sheepishly. "No, I got part of it from yours and part of it from the boss. Like I got the bit about the drug from him and the headache bit from you. And I also drew my own conclusions." I grinned at her. "I notice Josh wasn't concerned about my wellbeing." Alice shook her head. "Nope. I have to live with him. He is quite literally all brawn and no brain whatsoever. I come up blank every time I try to read his mind."
