The Shores

It seems to Pearl that nothing she ever does it right. She is made fun of at school. But Pearl's world turns upside down and sideways when she meets a strange girl. The girl helps Pearl discover her past, present and destiny. Can Pearl discover what she was born to do--in time to save her kingdom?

22. Surprise, Surprise

The library was a big room, with desks in the center, and book shelves all on the walls. There were staircases leading up, and there were just book shelves up there. If you went into the center of the first level and looked up, you would just see floor after floor, lined with books.

While I was standing in awe, my neck craned to look up, Perri whistled, "Hey! Hey Kolos!"

A tall man with a Crooked nose suddenly appeared at our sides. He had a mustard colored tail, which reminded me of the color of old books. "Shouldn't you be at work, boy? Not being in the company of a lady?"

Perri and I turned red. "Geez, I was just trying to help!" Perri said, but wheeled his cart to one of the shelves. He started to put the books from his cart on the shelf.
"You must forgive him," Kolos said with a sigh, "I'm afraid that he is...immature."
"I noticed." I muttered under my breath.

"Is there anything I can help you with, little lady?" he said.
"Yes," I tried to remember what Damita had told me. Oh yeah. Section BD. "I need to find something in section BD. Do you know where that is?"

"I must say I do." Kolos said, "But I would need some identity from you before I can take you there."

Like with Perri, I extended my hand. "Pearl Morlinda. Is that enough identity for you?"
Kolos looked startled, "Yes. Quite." And with that, he swam directly up. I followed. We swam until we came to the forth level. There was a small metal door. There was only room for one Shore to be in the doorframe. Kolos whisked keys from his pocket and unlocked the door. "Welcome," he said, "To section BD. Birth Documents."

Birth Documents? Why did Damita's riddle lead me to Birth Documents? Despite my confustion, I thanked Kolos for his help and entered the room. It was already lit with light, though very dimly. I could make out some file cabinets, lined up in rows. Hmmm. Where to start? Oh yeah. My name.
I soon figured out that the cabinets went by alphabetical order. I looked under the P section, looking for Pearl. I didn't find anything, so I tried the M section. Not there either. Maybe it was down by my real last name, Lavoie. I looked under L and there it was. The Lavoie file was divided into seven parts. The first paper said, 'These are the Names of the Last Two Generations of the Lavoie Family.'

In the first part of the Lavoie file, there was Uncle.

The next part was Uncle's wife.

Now we started to get to my closer family.
